First post here so apologies for any newby-isms. I'm very excited by this VCDO and the possibility of building a rock-solid, easy-to-setup synth around Druid chips
So, I'm wondering, now that the great Tom Wiltshire has conceived solutions for the VCO, Noise Source, and all the modulation generators needed in a typical synth, that only leaves VCA and VCF. If one were building an all-Wiltshire-sizer:
- would it be best to adhere to Tom's 0-5volt CV standard throughout?
- what would be the best VCA & VCF to use? |

Well, the wavetable nature of the VCDO means that you can have so much fun without needing to route through a VCF. I've been modulating the wavetable with the bipolar output of my Recycler, together with my Modulation Druid - very animated sounds, and a whole new ball game compared to the usual VCO > VCF > VCA signal path.
This week Tom sent me the latest version PIC, which includes a really funky new feature. The 16 sub osc waveforms are arranged in four group of four waveforms. -2oct, -1oct, unison, +1 oct. So, you can drive the subosc waveform select CV input with an ADSR or LFO to create octaved arpeggios! Such a cool feature.
I've also tried the subosc as an LFO at the VCDO's lowest range. While it does not go slow enough for really slow sweeps, it is comfortably sub-audio and can be pressed into service for fast LFO type duties. _________________ Frequency Central available at Analogue Haven - Equinoxoz - Lamond Design - Joe's Pedals - Prymaxe |

Sounds great, what a cool idea with the sub octaves!!
Any news about those artifacts mentioned earlier in the thread, are they present in your prototypes too? _________________ Konekonekone |

tom, i did not read up the whole thread.
will there be some documentation uploaded in near future? right now i am actually using only the x4046 VCO by thomas henry, and i would love to build a couple of DCOs if they are PIC based (and that's how i understood it?). _________________

Excuse me if this has been answered already and I missed it, but will Electric Druid be posting a project write up on his site for this like he does his other projects? |
Yes he will. I expect Tom will do a PDF as he has for his other projects. I'll be putting together build documentation for my project too. The process is this:
- a few tiny changes to the code still to do
- Tom will submit his code to Microchip, he'll get a couple of samples to ensure everything is correct
- Tom will get a bulk order from Microchip
- Waverider bundles will then be available
There is a possibility of 'alternative chip sets' with different sets of waveforms at some point in the future too. |
i'd preferred doing my own board, and burning the PIC myself. still possible? _________________

Of course, code and schematic will be open source. |
awesome. great attitude, as always.
i really should start to build tom's designs, all the more that i have a decent programmer anyways... _________________
