So I was thinking of doing a poll but was having trouble coming up the best possible answers to the question. I came up with this:

The music I usually make is...
a. Dance music, basically. Definitely a drum machine in there.
b. Kind of krautrock. Fairly rhythmic, but spacey and ambient.
c. Subotnick. You know, atonal, experimental stuff.
d. Noise. Most people wouldn't even call it music.

I am sure I am missing a few. Any suggestions? I could add them if a poll actually happens. There could be a d. None of the above or N/A, but wanted to avoid having too many options. Probably not a lot of people on the forum are patching up Broadway show tunes just for fun on the weekend.

I know that polls such, that you hate this labeling/genre thing and that you do different styles depending on your mood. But I was just kind of wondering what style of music you make most often for yourself, for fun, and not because you have to. And just for s**ts and giggles, it might be interesting to know your preferred format and approximate age.

So the music I make mostly, for myself, is...
b. Kind of krautrock. With eurorack, and I'm over 40.

I really love a lot of that Berlin school, sequencers and stuff, and often that is the kind of stuff that I end up patching. I just drift there after a while even when I start with something else in mind. I listen to the other styles a lot, but I don't patch that way for some reason.

I make ambient stuff with glitchy beats. Don't use drum machines solely for beats, mainly sequence stuff in a DAW or cut up loops into a lot of pieces.

I stopped using any drum sounds 30 yrs ago. I made 2 exceptions since.

Maybe ambient without drums? Mind you ambient means something different now.

classical structures?

I make

e. Drone : Nearly static in nature, and only barely shifting in terms of structure and timbre. Sounds for the patient and brave-at-heart.

Every now and then I enjoy myself making b.

Stephen

Everything on the list so far (including -- perhaps especially -- e. Drone), except a. Dance Music. Blecch.

Mind you, my first solo CD was a secret tribute to Autechre.

PS -- I was actually thinking of doing a poll like this just yesterday! Synchonomicity!

But I couldn't think of any way to include every single bloody sub-genre of dance-descended music without revealing my ignorance/distaste for them.

the last years:
mostly percussive stuff, groovy beats.
can be based on c and d. can lead to a
can be that i patch c and d purely to experiment around.
can be that i patch b, but only every two years or so hihi
lol

but these days i prefer to use the octatrack and use the modular mainly for FXing the octatrack, remixing vinyls, or Fxing digital synths if i use one.
in short: everything is patched thru the modular love modular is my FX

g. pseudo-classical. I am wasting my life
h. synth-pop I really didn't need to spend all this money on a modular when a roland sh-101 would have done the job better

I think if you want to pigeonhole people, you can skip worrying about the categories, and just put the genre of your choice with a yes or no option. Anything else is pretty ludicrous. The great thing about music is that you can create your own genre!
