Hi Guys,

Just bought a load of Cliff jacks, thinking that PCB mount meant it had the same profile as stripboard (as has been the case with most PCB mount stuff I have bought)
But no. Should have read the data sheet......

Do any of you guys know of a 3.5mm panel mountable Jack socket that has the right profile for stripboard?

Thanks in advance.

side to side the spacing is .1". bend the rear pins to 90 degrees. once it's mounted to a panel it should be fine. also wait until they are mounted in the panel to solder them so there won't be any stress created by misdrilled holes.

Sorry for the delay. I'm not an ungrateful bstard, for some reason I am not getting notification emails.........

I have not thought about bending the pins of the cliff jacks 90 degrees. Might be a good idea. But its still more of a ballache than it should be.

Falafelbiels, I have them aswell but cutting off the lugs doesn't do it. The legs are too fat to go through the stripboard so I have to file them down. It just takes too long, thats why I bought cliff pcb jacks. On the plus side, the jacks you mention do have the exact profile..

The cliff jacks also don't seem to stick out on the copper side very much. Not enough for me to feel comfortable about the joins.

I had this sometimes as well when I didn't cut off enough. However, if you cut twice to end up with a pointy bit, they work. For me at least...

What do you use to cut them?

Ok I have just tried to bend the cliff jacks 90 degrees, and they just snap off.

Is there any reason people buy cliff jacks? Are they actually better than the low cost ones?

I think they look kind of nice, but the Kobiconns make me happy; the shallow stripboard projects you can do with them are so much fun to build.

Get new side cutters. Tools are what it's about man!
Otherwise just file them down a bit.

I was thinking of widening the holes of the stripboard with my pcb drill. Then I might get away with not having to cut them at all....

I'm a bit concerned about panel cut-outs and i want to make sure it all lines up without too much board tension.

I usually drill with 1/2 mm tolerance for these. Then when installed, I wet the solder that holds them a little, in order to relieve some tension.
