It’s been quite an adventure, but the first batch of about 6 DDVCOs will be shipping tomorrow. They’ve all tuned up beautifully! Oh, you lucky bastards!

Sweet!
Wait... maybe it is too soon to celebrate. Mine could be in batch #5... or 10.
Nonetheless, this is good news for all who put down money. _________________

I'd love to see a pic of these beauties too. Has there been a reveal or is Doug letting the customers show them off? _________________ Brian

I had a box on the porch yesterday. I was excited, thinking it was the DDVCO...
... not.
It was my long-lost PSU and rack rails from MOTM.

I will personally volunteer to take pics for dude when mine arrives.
Pics of the box it arrives in.
Pics of it being unboxed.
Pics of it being caressed.
Pics of if nestling upon the soft fur of my ample belly hair.
Pics of it being "slotted" into "position" in the cabinet.
Pics of me "plugging in" a "wiring harness".
Pics of me "turning it on".
Pics of me slipping "patch cords" into its "sockets". Probably more than one patch cord too, 'cause it's that kind of module.
Oh yes, dude. There'll be pics. There. Will. Be. Pics.

In addition to the mix output / CV, the Octave CV inputs are killer.
Also, try self modulation by listening to Bank A, and plugging Bank B output into either the Expo or Linear CV inputs. If the Octave of channel B is significantly lower than A, you get all sorts of really cool 70's video game sounds! _________________ Doug Slocum

Wow! The "extra" features are the biggies that are missing from the original version. Great work!
Now all we need is some way to cv the waveform sliders - preferably through the temporal lobe interface you've been working on, right? _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. Hmmm?

The Aharmonious Sync Mode allows it to step through each part of the waveform (shift input for sequencer mode) right? Harmonious Sync must be waveform reset?
Does the Ring input affect the Ultra High Frequency core or the resulting bank outputs (or both)? Could you use the signal from an Oscillator like a normal Ring Mod or does it need an ultra high frequency input (or only form another DD)?
Like Mr. Winkels, I plan to explore all of the possibilities of every hole on this beast. _________________

Yeah, I guess this might be a good time to go over those functions.
First, the terms "Ring Modulator" and "Sync" are used very loosly, just to give a vague idea of what they do. As Bryan points out, you have to think about both the oscillator core and the counter defining the waveshape. Furthermore, there are two inputs to the counter that come into play. The results are different from on ordinary VCOs, and you may or may not find them useful.
First the "Ring Modulator". The input signal is squared up by a comparator and then sent to the Reset pin of the counter. So while the input is activate (>0) the counter is held at step one of the waveform. That's right, the output depends on where you have the first slider set! The RM input does not affect the core oscillator. So it acts similarly to a multiplication of the RM signal with the output waveform.
The "Sync" input affects both the core oscillator and the counter. First, the input is squared up and its edge fires a one-shot pulse. The edge of this pulse is used to hard-sync the VCO core. By itself, this is a rather weak effect, since it merely adjusts the position of the next stage of the counter.
In "Anharmonic Sync" mode, the squared-up input also controls the Enable pin of the counter. So the waveform just stops advancing as long as the input signal is positive.
In "Harmonic Sync" mode, the squared-up input controls the Enable pin and the one-shot pulse controls the Reset pin of the counter (along with the core VCO). The Reset is what makes it more "harmonic".
This is very confusing, I know. (I know because I always have to go over it myself to remember how it works.) Hopefully, the demo clips help somewhat.
Oh, and you can use both RM and Sync modes at the same time, if you want to.
Ian

Thanks for the in depth response Ian. This information will be put to good use! I love how many different ways to use this there are. _________________

I got some crazy timbres out of this beast in the five minutes I had with it today. My ssl modules have fast become goto-guys in all my patches, but this thing is nuts. I'll try to record this basic q119 to ddvco to megaohm delta patch when I can... _________________ http://gordonmerrick.bandcamp.com/

Hey Doug,
do you have any info as to the power consumption of this module?
Thanks!
actually, also the Segwencer, too! _________________ Polyphony

I've been a bit remiss in getting actual measurements on many of my modules. I need to build a quick little box to make that easier.
I should be able to get some measurements over the weekend. Feel free to bug me again though. _________________ Doug Slocum

Crappy pic of Number 4 in it's new home. After classes tonight I'll come home and do one with real lighting. The sounds I've been able to coax in just 5 minutes with no filter are amazing. Wish I could call in sick tonight!

If you keep getting this much love shown for the DDVCO, you might
want to consider adding it to your standard lineup.
Especially if you can make a profit at it.

Just installed mine an hour ago. It is a masterpiece. Particularly loving the VC octave switch mix and glorious FM sounds so far. Definitely would pick up more if they are made available. Thanks for your good work, Doug and Ian.

#7 Arrived while I was at work (thanks to my wonderful lady).
I made an SSL section with the TTLFO, DDVCO, Segwencer IV and the Digital Delay.
I also parked a Yusynth Arp clone filter, Dotcom ADSR and VCA close by.
This VCO is fantastic! The range is very large (the coarse freq is actually coarse and the fine really helps dial it in).
The Mix with CV control is invaluable. I didn't use the individual bank outs except at the end to check that they worked.
It is really amazing how much affect a single slider can have on the overall timbre.
I found you could go from very thin to nice and bassy with only a little bit of focused tweaking.
I have yet to try it out in the DC/LFO range. That will be a whole other session!
The last picture sums up my feelings for this module and everyone who made it possible.

lfo tri to segwencer depth in
bank A to segwencer VCA 1 in
segwencer outs to exp fm, lin fm, sync, ring
then twist lots of knobs, flip switches, and (as Ian said) shove the sliders around! _________________ Polyphony

Really? There are tons of demos of it out there. Ian's page has some great ones, which I think are duped on the bridechamber page. I made a video demo of the sliders in action and have used it in numerous patches that are on my soundcloud page. But maybe not exactly what you're looking for - it's a fairly deep module, there are lots of possibilities, and this new version adds some new features and functionality, although the sounds are basically the same. _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. The ramifications of this can only be truly appreciated when solving nodal current balances in the Laplace domain, unfortunately.

A Short demo of the DDVCO. This is just the DDVCO driven by an 8 note sequence and 2 LFO's. 1 LFO mixes the banks and the other modulates the Octave of 1 bank. There is no filter used.

Great demos! Both done without moving the sliders! You make it sound like you own it, already. If that's your style, I think you were made for each other. Thanks for posting.

I sold my zeroscillators within a month of getting them. This module is a cold dead hand module. I love it already and find it very easy to dial in what I'm looking for. I am seriously considering a 2nd if they become available. I'll do a more "standard" video tomorrow to show it more " "musically". And I'll show how great it sounds through a HPF! _________________ Society for the Performance of Twentieth Century Program Notes. |

Maybe.
Looking forward to 'em! I'm probably in the last shipment batch, but thankfully I am going to be pretty good at delayed gratification right now, being on jury duty for a 2-month(!) case and absolutely exhausted by the time I get home... |

I hope not this kind of "Dead Hand":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_%28nuclear_war%29
... though considering there are modules named "Geiger Counter" and
"Plague Bearer" maybe it's not such a bad name for the Eurorack version. :-)

I believe he refers to the actor Mr. Heston who famously clung to his guns.
The Soviet so called Dead Hand is very scary and may still be in existance. Mr. Putin is insane. |

ian,
page 4 of that. the pinout is basically correct except there is an unused pin 6, in addition to the key.
note also that the photo next to it is flat out wrong. pin 2 of that male header must be removed or the female keyway on the dotcom power supply wires won't fit.
i should have thought to send you a harness. _________________ Doug Slocum

A package arrived today.
Brought it indoors and noticed it felt a bit..... light. Surely Doug hasn't gone with a thin and insubstantial grade of aluminum?
I tore the flimsy box open.
My eyes glimpsed not the hoped for glister of a dozen LED lenses protruding proud and priapic from behind the panel but rather the dull matte thermoset plastic of a replacement T-Disc holder for my Tassimo brewer. I fell to my knees, hands tearing feebly at the plastic sheath that enclosed the T-disc receptacle.
"Why? Why? Why is there no Double Deka?" I pleaded to none save walls of the room, my refrain echoing off them, unanswered.
And so I shall be up all night, brewing endless cups of caffeinated gut rot. As I stare out over the blasted wasteland that is my front lawn, waiting for dawn to come and with it the renewed hope of another package, I will murmur to myself the same forlorn refrain, "Why? Why?"
But arrive it shall. As the greatest noisemaker to emerge from New Jersey since Albert Francis Sinatra, its imminent appearance cannot but lift my spirits. |

Sir Winkels, if you ever decide to publish these posts, put me on your customer list.
I said the same thing but my post was something like...
"I thought the box was the DDVCO, but it wasn't" or something equally prosaic. _________________ OpenTape
