If I understand this gizmo correctly, it is somewhat like a marriage between a 259 and a 296, with the ability to get each of those 10 harmonics with voltage-controlled levels. Pretty damn cool. I'd like to see a demo without the chaotic sequencing, though, which is rather distracting (please!). How about a sustained note, say middle C? Give us a snippet of each waveform, including PWM, then each harmonic.
Now, I have to ask: How much did you for it? |

Are the faders scratchy sounding?
I remember buying the delay module and all the faders were so scratchy it was really unusable.
I doubt I can get any further Verbos modules because the guy never replies to any of my emails which is very frustrating. Its a real shame because I love the 258v's and 254 I am sure my vids help sell some of thoes modules for him. I have been very supportive of his work.
Very disapointed that he has decided to no longer reply to me and yes I do have the correct email address and facebook. I really would have liked to buy this module. _________________

The different waveform outputs have a really nice, "large" analog sound. I'm curious to see the Harmonic Scan as well as the Spectral Tilt in action, preferably with some different CVs modulating them.
Even still, cool vid!

It is very FAT sounding, more so if NOT recorded on my Nikon, obviously...the slider are not scratchy; the noise you hear is coming from my Ineko delay!
...$1800 it was! Sounds great...my only complaint is/was the holes in the module for mounting in my boat were machined just a hair off making mounting a real hassle!
Mark is a man of few email words! I'd keep trying if you're serious about a purchase...John

I wish it was that simple, but its a catch 22, I email him get no reply leave it a month email again no reply then I was told that basically I was harassing him when I might send maybe 6 emails in a year to him. I know other people are gettng replies from him..very sad and frustrated about this. I really like the modules he makes. My 2x 258v's are my fav oscillators ever!...Every other manufacturer I have dealt with has been a breeze, Eardrill, etc I am hardly a hard person to deal with.
Obviously I would like to get this problem resolved. _________________

I don't want this to come off a rude and I know that beggars can't be choosers, however, would it be possible to do a demo for us that is without delay and just the oscillator into your mixer or soundcard without a VCA? I'm looking for what amounts to a drone with some futzing about with the feature-set of the oscillator. Maybe just 3 frequencies: low, mid & high.

| The new oscillator uses new faders that feel like butter. You can actually go smoothly from zero to full without getting physically stuck or hearing crackling sounds. |

Nothing is worth putting up with that kind of bullshit for... though it seems like letting people think they're somehow "special" when they're "lucky enough to hear back from you" is almost a marketing strategy in the synth world.
In my world, it's just douchebaggery. I gave up on the guy a long time ago. |

well it all started out of confusion. Mark told me he was thinking about making a 259 clone back when he started making the 258v when I started dealing with him, which I now assume is what this module has become? Anyway of course I start to hear about 259 clones. I see peoples 259 clones and of course I would love one so I ask when he will be making them .6 months later and he denies ever saying it, somewhere along the line I must have upset him but from my side I am on the other side of the world every other manufacturer I have dealings with have been great and Mark was for a short while, maybe he was upset because I youtubed the lovely 258vs? I dont know these stupid fucking rules where you are not allowed to talk about something or you are, yet you are suppose to know what these rules are and people break the rules????
Anyway last email he implied I was hassling him, again not having emails only makes you email more because you wonder if the firrst email gets through etc. Now I am completely ignored if I email him or twice Facebook him.
I really do think its shitty and to be honest the only thing I hate about the whole synth comunity is the Buchla world of unspoken rules and lies. Most people are brilliant here it just takes 1 or 2 people to be assholes to ruin it for me.
I dont know why he thinks he is better than anyone else, someone mentioned that "be fair this isnt his job he is a busy guy" but for fuck sake we are all busy if not busier and yet we all have the decency to reply to emails.
Anyway I am sorry for this to come up here but I have no other way of expressing myself as Mark never replies. I just really hate this shit! _________________

So move on then. You'll never force him to reply to your emails complaining that you think he thinks he's better than you in a forum. Starting to sound like a psycho ex-boyfriend there my friend...
Didn't you buy one of his modules from him and sell it very soon afterwards, like less than 2 months after buying it? the 288v? |

No worries/be happy - Verbos is hard t' deal with at times. i never buy his stuff anymore less he has it on hand or it is used. I sold my 288 too. I love what he does but i agree he can be a pain to deal with him sometimes. _________________ Beatniks and Bongos/Bagels and Bongos/Buchlas and Bongos...

yep sure .
Aparently we are not allowed to talk about 259 clones and yet they exist, aparently, as I learnt over time, that one rule is you are not allowed to post images of them or vids of them, yet I have seen heaps of them over time on youtube or photos only adding to my frustration of wanting to play one and enjoy it.
As I say 99% of the Buchla community is what I want from a community, interested , enthusiastic and joy at celebrating a wonderful instrument.
Thanks Science and Minimoog56 for also saying things about Verbos you guys rule!
I will never be offered a 259 clone or any more Verbos modules so fuck the rules! _________________

Why is this bothering you ? I needed to vent my frustration and as I said I dont expect anything from Mark anymore as he would never reply.
Also why does that bother you that I sold a 288V? I bought it, it was so scratchy sounding that I couldnt use it the way i wanted to and was told by other yes thats the way the 288v is so I sold it, Big deal!
And Dkcg if you let me vent then I will move on. I have said what I need to say friend. _________________

Doesn't bother me at all. Just pointing out a possible explanation as to why he doesn't respond to you.
I don't think making it personal and calling Mark and whoever else is on your shitlist today assholes is helping any. Pardon me if I have trouble shelling out any pity your way. |

Isn't that what you've done all through this thread? A Buchla conspiracy against you for breaking the rules? |

Aparently we are not allowed to talk about 259 clones and yet they exist, aparently, as I learnt over time, that one rule is you are not allowed to post images of them or vids of them, yet I have seen heaps of them over time on youtube or photos only adding to my frustration of wanting to play one and enjoy it. |
I only can guess that is because it's likely frowned upon without the blessing of Don. And those making them may have a relationship that they do not want to jeopardize or just honoring his wishes that it's not a commercial product. --This is ONLY A GUESS, I have no actually information on this.
FWIW: I only dealt with Mark once, and everything went well, and arrived sooner than expected. |

Wow. This thread took a weird turn.
I'd love to hear more about this new Harmonic Oscillator!

Can't help it. I'm jumping in:
I do not think that Mark Verbos is a cryptic, noncommunicative guy to every person with whom he has transactions. When I have a question for him and/or wish to purchase a module, all I need to do is shoot him an email, and I'll get a response in minutes/hours.
Could it be possible that he will just selectively avoid people with whom he has had conflict? Let's be mindful of the fact that he has not yet given us his side of the story. It takes two to tango....
I must clarify that I have no inntention of taking sides in this matter, though. I just think that we should not pass final judgement until he, at least, voices his account of the situation.
And with that said, I have to say that this new oscillator looks/sounds AWESOME! |

Well this is the whole problem. I honestly have no idea why he will not respond to me. All I know is that I have the correct email address and am using two different email addresses just in case one is blocked, not in anyway hassling him I am just asking if I can buy his product. I am hardly emailing him daily or weekly.
My only thinking is again he did mention to me when the 258v was coming out that he may build a 259, I assume he never did but when I saw the 259 clones I obviously wanted one and about I asked him about it and he denied ever saying it.
I am on the other side of the world and communication is everything when you cant see anyone on the street or call them on the phone. All I know is I am fed up with trying to buy a product from him when I know he answers other people.
Again I love his 258v and 254 I just hate it when I try to email a person and want to give them money and I get no response. On the other side I have Cynthia who takes your money and I have to email her to findout what is going on and at least aI get a nice response.
I am more than happy for Mark to respond because honestly I am in the dark about this too.
You must remember I only aired this here due to total frustration that I could not get through to Mark and that I had been excluded from getting a 259 clone. Nothing to do with Mark)
Maybe my enthusiasm for syths gets read the wrong way with people, but this is the thing I pretty much love the most in the world and not much else impresses me in the world.
Personally I didnt really appreciate DCKG having ago at me,saying who I hate this week as I am not that kind of person at all, but it wouldnt be the first time he has had a snipe at me. And really its not Monomania when some other people have chimed in. _________________

| First thing I would do with this module is drone at constant pitch and ping those sliders with envelopes. Then try different wave forms. Then run same into a 285e and see what kind of bells tones would result. |

Very cool idea. It would be a cool feature for Ian Fritz's double dekka to have voltage control of the sliders. Here's some samples of the dekka to compare to the Verbos module if anyone is interested. _________________ Brian

perhaps monomania was a bit harsh, but you very much remind me of Captain Ahab,
That demo sounded GREAT, and is forcing me to seriously contemplate rethinking my buchla strategy. _________________ bsmith: it would be awesome to see people with lots of euro give them pokemon values and do battle

This might be my perfect oscillator.
Mind you not something for everybody but this probably what I've always wanted from a VCO and a bit more.
I have nowhere near the money to afford it though and not enough time to breadboard it to life. So I'm loving the demos, keep 'em coming! _________________ impeccable surface |

My two cents...
The people that are taking the time and trouble to make "clones" of original Buchla modules really don't want a whole lot of hoohah online about heir work as they don't want to piss off Don.
Mark CAN take some time to get back as he has a life outside of making these precious wonders.
Neither he or any other person making this stuff is raking in big money as they are time consuming and hand wired. He offers it as a selective service to those who appreciate his work and are willing to be patient with him and respect his time and hard work.
If you think he is not providing you a quality product or great service, don't buy anything from him.
Sometimes he gets right back to me, sometimes not. I LOVE his work and will wait until it is convenient for him to fill my order as his work is fabulous and his redesigns are the sh*t!
There were a few folks that took advantage of a lot of people (including me!) back when the older 200 series stuff came back into vogue. They were opportunists and nobody deals with them any longer as they have been outed as such.
And Don doesn't seem to want to revisit his earlier designs, so I just consider myself lucky to have someone that wants to even TRY and remakes these modules.
Bottom line? If ya can't wait...don't.
Peace & cheers! _________________ My name is Guido and I approved this opinion. |

OK I wasnt going to respond any more because this is about the new Oscillator.
A few things... Captain Ahab? I am not trying to destroy anything. If you read every time I talk about the 258v and 254 I talk about loving them. Shit a few people here would not know about the 258v if it wasnt for my you tube vids. Now is Mark pissed that I you tubed them I have not idea? I think more than anything it probably gave him more sales. :-)
Regarding patients. Yes I can be patient but I get concerned when I talk to other people and they say talk to Mark as he is taking orders and then I email and get no reply and other people say I emailed him and 10 minutes later he responded. Ok if he is not replying to a few folks then I am fine with that. Its just hard to know where a person stands when there is no response.
If I am wrong about all this well I will take the hit but its so confusing to know what the rules are and what the arent.
I never said Mark made the 259 clone I said he told me he was thinking about maybe making one probably 2 years ago and then denied saying it, which confused me.
You never know, now that there are new owners the 259 may see the light of day again anything is possible. :-) I know the new owner and have mentioned the popularity of the 259.
Now back to this great new oscillator and more demos:-) _________________

I enthusiastically second Guido's statements. I have had the chance to own and love some of his designs, and they are such a wonderful addition to my system that I don't think I would have kept mine if I Mark's creations were not available. I personally have never known of Mark making a 259 clone, though. I have seen clones which originated from another, secret cornucopia but so far only 258v's and 262's have I seen come from him. I badly want one or two 262's now, though.... gorgeous things they are. I am very curious about making new funky waveshapes using the different freq outputs.
I think the synth community should understand that there are many Verbos-brand modules out there, all of which represent, IMO, satisfied customers. Dissatisfied individuals seem to be the exception rather than the rule, therefore, it's be interesting to hear Mark's side of the story(ies). then again, I'd much rather hear 262 sound samples..... |

Another satisfied customer here.
In two separate situations I never received anything less than friendly and timely service from Mark.
I think it's great he's not on any forums too. |

GREAT! I really like this one.
This situation is really a paradox. On one hand I expect a great sounding Verbos oscillator and on another I hope John is gonna show us only crap so I really don't like it and though do not wish to get one.
But John is controlling it... and it is a Verbos...
Aaargh... Why am I doing this to myself?

Thanks Pfurmel but actually it's not a demo, but a finished piece exploiting my limited technological prowess in this area and the 262v in particular...I cannot explore the functions of the 262v in any concise manner precisely because I don't know exactly what I'm doing...just the joy of patching and tweaking!!!

Hello Analogues,
My Verbos Harmonic Oscillator just arrived and here is a very basic, no processing slide and twist through a few of its parameters. Can't wait to
truly explore this. See my description below.
OK. . . this is just out of the box moments ago. This is a very rudimentary demonstration of just a few of the basic functions. Apologies for the poor recording quality of my flipcam mic -- you will occasionally hear some graininess, aliasing, and light distortion due, I think to the mics inability to handle the difference tones and rich harmonic content. The sounds I am hearing are very, very pure! The faders are as smooth as butter and the pots have a nice easy resistance. This demo is all just on a single fundamental pitch -- haven't even hooked this up to a sequencer. No effects or processing. At some point I'll post a high quality audio on soundcloud. Hope this is helpful. _________________ Buchla Breaks: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/buchlabot

Awesome module and great demo. It appears to be set up to do additive synthesis. I would want to try stuff like this:
(damn it's hard to find examples of graphs like this...)
Or maybe just use this module in the synthesis section of a vocoder? Seems like it would make a good companion to the 296e. |

How would you generate those kind of envelopes within the 200e?
With some 230e from an ext input? |

Exactly. This becomes the next question. I was trying this by setting up amplitudes in the 291e and then using an envelope to run the sequencer in CV mode. This works, but is tedious. You could do something similar with the 251e, because you can also use CV to select stages, but you are limited to four envelopes (probably enough though). I wanted to be able to upload CV values into the 251e for this purpose (among other things). The 296e will generate envelopes if you are just interested in tracking an input signal. I guess this is just vocoding. Oh, the 256e might be great for this! Just the 281e and the 256e should give you four envelopes. Pretty crude, but it probably works. |

This oscillator is so cool. |
The 210e could help too. You could mix a 281e channel and the 255 channel together to get the initial spike, and then the long rise and fall. The only problem with the 255 is that it's not easy to then stretch the time base. Still waiting on the final verdict on the 257e. It might be the 255e I've been yearning for. |

| If you had specific shapes you wanted for a large set ofenvelopes the 225e and an external sequencer that lets you draw midi cc data would work. |

These videos are great. Could you make a video with CV to the sliders and then sequence the pitch?
Thanks again for making these! |

Thanks Sascha, you're most welcome! The sliders control volume of each harmonic not pitch, each harmonic is a fixed pitch relationship to the fundamental I believe. Sending cv envelops to those slider will affect the volume, sort of a minimal vca. At 2:16 in demo #1 you can see/hear the effect. I'm looking forward to sending very long cv envelops to these input in order to create a very smoothly shifting cloud of undulating harmonics. :-)

| I'm aware that CV to the sliders effects volume of the harmonics. What I'd like to hear is CV to the sliders so you're sequencing the volume of a few harmonics. Then transpose the pitch of the whole thing with CV into the pitch of the oscillator every so many bars. If done right this should be arpeggios from heaven! |

How are the sliders on the 262v? From these videos it seems like if you put them up a little the volume is most of the way up. _________________ WTB: EMS 8 Octave Filter Bank, Pitch to Voltage, and Random Voltage Generator units in the wood case. |
