I'm building a radio feedback instrument. Not done yet, but it's getting there. I especially need to see if I can actually control it reliably in the future ;-)

That's pretty slick - could you go into what you're doing here? I see some piezo's taped to the speaker...

Thanks! No, no piezos, they're coins. On is connected to an output and one to an input. Other than that the two radios feed into a preamp/distortion box, from which one signal goes to an fm transmitter, two to a mixer (with a send to yet another fm transmitter). Needs lots of tweaking and gaffa tape still.

Pizeos are a neat idea. I was thinking of adding electret mics to the radios as I have some already. used in this:

Crazy! A friend of mine (Michael Johnsen) does some interesting stuff with hand held and inter-modulating radios. Not sure what bands he's using, but it's really subtle and difficult to manipulate. I know he's developed some very specific techniques over the years. Please keep us posted as the project progresses.

Mess away! It's tons of fun. Maybe not the foxconn-style lead soldering, but playing it.

I'll check him out. Sounds interesting—I still haven't probed the insides of the radios very much. I'm hoping to find a big radio with more surface mount stuff in it. Something really old I guess.
I will definitely keep this space updated. For those in London I'll likely be playing a better version of this at noise=noise on the 14th. Hopefully we can get some video/audio too!

Oops, Tonesucker are obviously plural.

The radios didn't quite work out as in the video for the gig, probably due to me using a different transmitter and other stuff.

Was anyone from here there? Some good noise that night.

Eh.. I've just made lots of splitter cables and run feedback with that d'oh!

I was using a mixer send too in the video.

The preamp box is just two of these http://www.sonodrome.co.uk/?page_id=980 badly soldered into a tin with the queen on. It makes tones and doesn't work while open, or just at random d'oh! which is entirely my fault.

One radio transmitter is one of these: http://anarchy.translocal.jp/radio/micro/howtosimplestTX.html Planning to build lots of those!

The other ones I bought off amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00387NFWC/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_detai ls although I think they were cheaper at that time. They make high pitched squeals when feedbacked, not the nice noises from the video. Some good aliasing and clicky noise though.

It wasn't very reliable though so I might hack something up on a stripboard or two so I can use it more. Just an input, preamp with lots of gain, two outputs with separate attenuation (one to mixer, one to transmitter). Times two.
