I dont think the Buchla is really that much more different than all the modulars about today, obviously there are a few differences but we aint different humans because of it.
Or are we?
I think a better question is what is a typical Buchla. |
I don't know, personally I believe that the choices we make can say a lot about us. Personally, I find Buchlaists, for the most part quite an 'interesting' bunch. I know I've exchanged some messages with some of us where I've felt like I'm speaking with a difference engine or something I am stereotyping.... |

Funny. I have a Ducati that doesn't get ridden much that I'm thinking of selling to partially fund a Buchla starter. I did promise my wife that I'd put a third of the sale proceeds into a vacation fund so she's cool with it. _________________ What were we talking about? I forgot... |

I had a Ducati and a Buchla 200e simultaneously up until last year, sold both with next to no regret.
There are "things" which are more important to me - nature, friends, good health...

how does a 20-year-old afford a buchla system? do you sell drugs? |
Why would this matter?
Whether he sells heroin, lives off a trust fund, got it as a birthday gift, happens to have a great job, or just saved up working random summer jobs for the past 6 years, it's really only his business. |

Having a Buchla or a motorcycle means no nature, friends and bad health? |

No, of course, but there are "categories" of significance - you will certainly agree.
Owning a Buchla system is neither the culmination of life nor musical instruments ownership - it is just a luxury experience that I was happy to have had and I wish everyone is able to have as well.

Ah, ok. I completely agree. And I still hope to have a Ducati Monster one day, hopefully w/o giving up the Buchla... |

For some it's a musical tool. An important component of their working studio.
I think that's actually what it was designed for, not to be a luxury possession. |

I had a Ducati Monster and nearly killed myself driving 240 km/h...there is no comparable risk owning a Buchla 200e as far as I know - maybe increasing debts...both are real beauties!

Completely agreed - it is a musical tool hopefully part of a toolbox as there are usually different tasks.

is it though? The forum isn't public readable, there's only a login link, and no register link. I've tried to register a number of times and just plain given up. _________________ "I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down." |

Only if you figured out a way to make it reliable, or found a shop that would service it for free |

this leads to the idea of a possible "buchla only" gathering. just a thought that crossed my mind when i read this.
unfortunately, mid sized or large buchla systems tend to be too big for carry on luggage and i assume buchla owners would be too hesitant to check in their systems to fly to somewhere. |

Actually I think you are right Mike.
I seem to remember hearing something like this before, but when I joined there in November 2009 I think it was open to all comers.
I guess the best way would be to contact one of the mods who are also over here such as Smitty, Bartelbooth or sacha.victoria
Maybe they can throw some light on the mystery. |
