Gents,

I'm out of my depth here.

I'd like to purchase a compact video camera that is equipped with analogue stereo inputs. I'm hoping to spend 500€ as a maximum ceiling.

I've seen the following on the web:

    Panasonic HC-V500M
    Samson/Zoom Q3HD
    VIXIA HF R32
    Alesis VideoTrack (no line inputs)

I'm sure there are more options and other criteria, but I don't know much about the world of video. Hence, I'm a vidiot.

Any suggestions, impressions or past successes to pass along?

Thanks! thumbs up

Kent, I wish I could give you more input.

Forget the Alesis. It's being blown out here for about $30 USD because the audio doesn't always sync or remain in sync.

The one thing I'd put out there, without knowing anything about the unit in question is that I have found Panasoinic stuff to be more reliable then any of the other big companies.

If I where buying something for anything above disposable range, I would shoot for Panasonic or Canon.

Tommy

I personally like the Canon Vixia series. The one I have is now discontinued, but the size and features of the current models are great. All the HD ones do have stereo microphone inputs. I don't think any of them have stereo line level inputs anymore. Mine does, if recording in standard definition, but not in high def. Mine can record standard definition in from an external device, but the newer ones seem to have removed that feature.

The pro series ones do of course, with XLR inputs. But you're talking $2k+ for those.

I looked through the manual for the Panasonic that you mentioned and don't see any stereo audio inputs. It has a built in stereo microphone, but I can't see any connection for an external microphone. It has an AV cable connection, but as far as I can tell that is output only.

i use a canon HG20 which I enjoy.. it's a hard drive camera.. So upgrading to solid state will help in noisy (bass heavy) situations.. the camera has a shock detector that can get triggered by big bass.

I've used stereo audio ins with this.

The Olympus LS20M might be something to look at, it has a nice low cost.

I use a Canon ZR200 MiniDV Cam as a video capture (mini DV in) device and it also has line inputs, RCA but you could easily adapt it to whatever super cheap. I keep tons of different kinds around for those "if I just had a..." moments.

This is the one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CANON-ZR200-ZR200A-MiniDv-Mini-Dv-Stereo-Camco rder-Player-Camera-Video-Transfer-/221039925191?pt=Camcorders_Professi onal_Video_Cameras&hash=item33770197c7#ht_1846wt_1339

Hope this is some help to you.

Good luck.

P.S. If you download the manual, the instructions on how to use the DV terminal as an input instead of an output are on page 82 (in my manual at least)
