Just wondering, looking at my verbs/delays/multi effects I suspect I have a few too many though I do use them all, some more than others...

Im currently at the following, all of which have their merits:

Eventide H3000D/SE - my best, used on everything.

Lexicon MPX500 - realistic verbs, decent to program.

Zoom 9010 - 4 in 4 out in 1U, 2 CV inputs, very configurable, shines when using multiple effects on a single slot, not the best to program but not the worst.

Ensoniq DP/2 - dirty and dark, CV ins, my PSU needs recapping and takes a while to start up, which is annoying and stops me from using it as much as I should.

I also use an ekdahl mosterizer, bug ptdelay and jomox t-resonator on the aux outs of my mixer.

Does that seem unreasonable or is it nice to have different flavours? I sometimes wonder whether Id be better off losing the zoom and the ensoniq and buying a space or something, though Id lose a lot of modularity and flexibility of the current (greedy) config.

Ooh goody, lets compare - in terms of straight effects I have:

Eventide H3500 D/FX
Klark Teknik DN780 w/remote
Klark Teknik DN34
Lexicon MPX1
Roland SDE2000
Roland Space Echo RE201
Venecs AP01 (crazy Soviet stereo analog delay)
Ensoniq ASR10 (used as an effects processor)

This doesn't include compressors/signal processors or guitar pedals.

Unlike some people I rely heavily on my patchbay and a side-car mixer to create signal chains 'experimentally'. When I get something good happening I record it, layering, automating and arranging as I go. I seldom use more than half of my gear on any one pass.

^ Ive not included things like my monomachine (which gets a ton of use as a processor) and octatrack.... or filters... or the stuff inside my modular.

Other than the stuff chained to my mixer and the eventide I use the other bits pretty sparingly- I like using multiple verbs, or a variety of verbs on different parts of a drum kit for example. I could probably use less.

Apart from guitar pedals not a lot really

Alesis Quadreverb+ which is a good basic workhorse

Like tIB I have I an ekdahl mosterizer, Bug PT delay

Plus a Bugcrusher and a couple of tape delays.

I tend to use stuff in the DAW occationally

Would love to get hold of some of the decent outboard effects you gus have but I'm trying to rationalise my system rather than grow at the moment.

Effects junkie here.

Korg Drv2000 - character reverbs and ping pong delay.
ADA digital delay - extremely lofi and noisy.
ZVEX Mastotron Fuzz - Sounds amazing on digital sources.
Pigtronix Echolution Delay - live looping and general sound mangling.
EHX Memory Boy - sounds great but doesn't play well with others so it gets it's own send/return.
DOD Bass Chorus and Boss RV3 for general ambience and modulation.

A crapload of AU/VST plugs. My favorites are the King Dubby Delay and anything by Destroy FX.

I wish I had more auxes/channels on the mixer so I could have more simultaneous effects going.

Like synth modules, I prefer single-purpose units, so I stick to these three:

Roland SDE-330 (delay)
Roland SDX-330 (chorus)
Roland SRV-330 (reverb)

I love the sound out of these things. Maybe I listened to too much ambient techno in the mid-90s. If I had an Eventide or Fireworx or something, I would just sit and program it all day and get nothing done.

Stompbox-wise, everything I have is pretty extreme (Rainbow Machine, Ravish Sitar, etc.) so it's not a usual part of the signal flow.

Thanks for playing. smile

@ steve - thanks thats nice of you to say, though ultimately much of my percussion is a result of filtering and light use of the stuff on my mix outs. I wonder whether Id be better fixed with something with more character than a couple of my lesser used bits- that dynacord delay/verb thing is something that always comes up when Im skint, looks the business.

Im entirely out of the box now so plugs are no good, I can see the pull though.

I think all of those older rack FX units sound really good. In addition to the Rolands you mentioned, the Korg SDD-3000 and Yamaha SPX-90 all have some special flavor to their sound (namely distortions in the A/D/A processing and DSP hacks due to limited CPU power).

Vintage mid-90's rack FX are going up on ebay right now as we speak lol

Eventide Space(now I want the Pitch Factor)
Realistic Reverb
Boss RPD-10 digital panning delay
Boss PS-2 digital mono delay/pitchshifter The tuner out is a nice extra feature, free oscillator This is fun!
Spencer Amps Zombie Fuzz
Metasonix TX-3(I prefer using this as an oscillator, but its fun to run drums through it for sonic destruction)

Almost forgot, Zoom 506 Bass multi-fx box. Bought one when I was learning to play bass. Sold it when I decided that analog was the only way to go d'oh! Fast forward 10 years, and I buy another off of a wiggler for next to nothing. It is a piece of shit, but its still fun to use.

A lot of these are not multi-effects? I mean when I think "multi-effect" I think of something like an SPX90 or a PCM81 &/or their ilk.

I have a Quadraverb + which sits in the rack unused because the LCD light has crapped out. I mean to get it fixed, for all it's an oldie/cheapie there are a few effects in it that I like.

I also have an Alesis Wedge which I used to use as an echo box, but since I got the time factor pedal, not so much. I keep it because I really like the long reverb fading into white noise thing it does when you push the reverb timer slider all the way up.

I have a Digitech Studio 400 (IE 2 x studio quad in one 2u high box) which is dedicated to reverb ATM. It's my main/only reverb box although when I mix something in the box I use a convo reverb instead. It is in truth pretty crap at reverb, so when I get some scratch together I'd like to get a nicer reverb unit like a pcm91 or whatever the tc electronic 1u fancy reverb box is and use the studio 400 for modulation effects which I think it is very good at.

there is also a Roland SDX330, which I guess counts as a multi effect because it does chorus, flanging AND roto speaker! (I wish it did phasing). That I have hooked up permanently to a pair of outs on a Proteus 2000 module, I have programs specially tailored to the sounds I prorgammed in that.

The only thing I'm really interested in picking up is weirdly enough one of those Behringer v-verb things. I read enough of the kind of people who diss everything behringer praising this one that I'm kind of curious about it. It's OOP, maybe I'll snag one off of ebay sometime.

Apart from that it's single function boxes for me.

^ yeah, I guess I meant digital effects, though I didnt want to rule out analogue ones... or standalones... so effects that arent compressors or filterbanks then? lol

Always fancied trying the wedge- heard good things.

dadek has nice things. smile

For analog multi-fx the Ibanez rackmount ones are pretty good. UE-400, UE-405 etc. Certainly lo-fi though!

I must admit I don't use my outboard fx so much any more except for rough mixes since I end up adding most in the box after recording dry. I still have Ensoniq DP/2, Yamaha SPX-90 II (still love the reverbs on this thing!) and one of the older Lexicon boxes... and the UE-400 of course, but I use that in-line as a "sound mangler".

Cheers
Blair

Eventide H3000 D/SE loaded
Eventide Eclipse
TC-D-Two
Lexicon MPX 500
Evol Fucifer
Roland RE -150

plus Metasonix TM-1,2 and the Bugbrand PT Delay and Crusher and other assorted pedals.

I think I need more, not less. I have been debating getting a Eventide Space but for $500.00 more I could just pick up another Eclipse. I am also on the verge of pulling the trigger on a Lexicon PCM 96. Sometimes I think I would almost rather have more nice FX boxes then synths. I do use a lot of shit ITB as well but part of my creative process involves outboard fx chains. I think that was attracted me so much to modulars in the first place.

I've got a reasonable amount of outboard effects but I have to admit I've done all of my effecting via plug-ins since moving to Logic Audio some years back.

Alesis Quadraverb2 (x 4)
Alesis Midiverb 4
Digitech Studio 100
Boss CE-300 Super Chorus (x 2)
Boss GT-Pro
Line6 Pod X3 Pro

I do still use the GT-Pro and Pod for guitar and bass though. I did recently upgrade to a multi-channel audio interface and I'm hoping to be able to use the Q2s and CE-300s soon.

Cheers,
Adam-V

Eventide eclipse
Eventide space
Strymon el capistan
Elektron octatrack
NI guitar rig

I had and sold a dp4 which I miss but only for sentimentality reasons..the eclipse and space sound much better and are infinitely easier to program/control via midi.

The el capistan however is my favourite. Such a fantastic sounding pedal it just makes everything you run through it sound better. I sold it to guy to upgrade to a timeline but actually then traded it back..I only found myself using the tape delay emulation and the el cap was much better at this then the timeline.

If anyone has a computer I thoroughly recommend guitar rig..it's a really well thought out good sounding piece and once music is inside my comp it always goes through this for effects. You can get some really complex chains....

Hanging off my mixer's aux sends I have;
Boss DM-300
Roland RE-201
Strymon El Capistan
Jomox T-Resonator
Alesis Quadraverb
Akai MFC-42
Clavia Nord Modular G1

I think of my fx rack as an integral part of my modular.
Now that I have a more integrated modular > mixer > pc > modular chain (Mackie 1640i) I look forward to integrating plugins with the modular, realtime It's peanut butter jelly time!

Eventide Eclipse
Lexicon MPX-1
TC Fireworx
Line6 PodXT Pro

Not a multi, but I've also got a Digitech TimeMachine

Don't really use any of them for FX other than some tasty verb and delay after the fact (i.e. when I'm mixing) Could definitely push the Firework and Eclipse harder for weirding things up in realtime.

MPX-1 is great for the price you can pick them up these days!

Is the 301 verb the same as the 201?
If so, I concur: classic dub vibes right there SlayerBadger!

I currently use my Kaosspad, Ensoniq DP/2 and two pedalboards for multi fx processing. The DP/2 is so usefull.. should've had it years ago

Wow! I wrote most of the presets and manuals for that and the MidiVerb 4.

I have the PCM96 and love it. I use it on everything. I have the PCM96 Surround, but usually use it as two stereo machines. Highly recommended.

If I could do it again, I might get a Bricasti and run a second software reverb like Valhalla Room or Lexicon Native.

forgot to list the pcm96, yes, also use it a bunch, but mostly with 'real' instruments. ie: those pesky ones that require microphones.

i've resisted auditioning a bricasti, i have the feeling as soon as i do i'll be out $3000 dollars.

On the wish list:

Latest multi-effect line-up in the mixer:

TC Electronics M300
Kurzweil Mangler
Lexicon Vortex
Lexicon Reflex (used mainly for Resonator and Canyon)
Korg KaossPad I
DeltaLab Effectron 1024

In reserve:
Lexicon LXP-1 & LXP-5
Alesis Nanoverb
Alesis Microverb III

Many more single use effects and pedal effects. This thread gets me excited. thumbs up

Only multifx I have is the Eclipse and a KP3 that I don't use much and should sell. I'd love the KP3 if Korg released the software that they wrote the presets on but the amount of editability available on it isn't enough for me.

Other fx I have are:

Timefactor
Yamaha E1010
MF-104Z
A199
Pittsburgh Analogue Delay
Sound of Shadows
Octatrack

Well this thread had the desired effect - after considering what I have, use the most and need I've decided to streamline a little. Going to sell the zoom, DP2 and lexicon, I have a kurzweil ksp8 on the way that will hopefully more than cover those losses and simplify workflow. I'll keep my 'character' modular and standalone stuff along with the h3000... effects refinement complete!

I guess it's kinda hard to define a multi-effect. If it can do reverb and delay, is it a multi?

Boss GT-10B
Vermona Retroverb Lancet
Schippmann Ebbe und Flut
Eventide Space
Knas Ekdahl Moisturizer
Strymon TimeLine
Boss RE-20 Space Echo (rendered all but obsolete by TimeLine)
Alesis Midiverb IV (mostly unused because of Eventide. Maybe if I need a Jarre-like flanger one day...)

Take your time learning the architecture and routing of the KSP8. This effect processor is DEEP (I have one too). In my experience, I find the Eventide Eclipse more friendly than the KSP8. YMMV.

eek!

^ Thanks for that, thats the plan really- learn it and let it fill on all the gaps. I got it for a lot less than an eclipse so its worth the effort I think. How do you like the sound of it?

Cool!

I still have my Quadraverb GT which I bought about 16 years ago with money from mowing lawns etc - it's got some cool sounds. The resonator cool

My favourite Alesis box is probably the Midiverb II though, so simple and good sounding.

First impressions of the KSP8 are very good- incredible reverbs and will complement the H3000 very well. Win!

Anyone have any ideas where I can track down an input/output expansion for one of these?
