Why do people do this? I can't think of a good reason. Do you do it? Explain it to me. _________________ Richard

My wife did for the first eight months she owned a car.
She claims she was never taught to do otherwise. |

No idea. We've had fairly poor weather most of the past week, and I've seen people zipping around at 100kph with either just the basic daytime running lights, or absolutely nothing at all... |

At night or in the day?
In France, there are some very specific rules about the use of the various lights. We U.S. (possibly Canucks?) guys have/had it easy in comparison. _________________ Kent: Putting the 'ass' in "World Class"

| it is illegal in CA to drive with just your parking lights on. Lot's of people do it here on the central coast for some reason(some of the worst drivers on earth here.) |

when its really rainy out and theres lots of street lights and other cars Ive found its surprisingly easy to mistake the parking lights being on for the driving lights due to all the glare _________________ I like the bass. The toms. The sound of the kick drums. I like my radio. Up and not low. |

Not just California - pretty much all of the civilized world that has any kind of laws regarding operating motor vehicles specify when and what kinds of lights to use at night.
My guess is that in some situations you just don't notice that you've forgotten to turn them on until you get to a particularly dark area. That's certainly happened to me. My current car (truck? FJ Cruiser) has Daytime Running Lights, so the headlights are always on, although dimmed somewhat when not in the On position. Helps keep me out of trouble. _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. I only have one headlight and the other is covered in pink duct tape. What are these rules you are talking about?
Neither a car nor synths are going to get me chicks so I'd rather have synths. Fuck the car!

That is the headlight in the bottom left that I ripped out with my bare hands. _________________ Brian

I was taught that if it is raining in the daytime you should turn on your headlights since it is harder for people to see you in that kind of weather. Perhaps some other people learned to just turn on the running lights in those situations.
I know there have been times on highways in the daytime in heavy rain where I have come up on a slow moving car with no tail lights and it was difficult to see them very far in advance. _________________ Dave Jones Design | http://www.jonesvideo.com |

My Toyota truck I purchased here in Florida in 2003 automatically turns on the headlights regardless of my input day or night. The caveat is that my back lights don't turn on either way!
I was pulled over by a police officer here in Florida whom pointed out that my back lights weren't on one evening. When I pointed out that my front lights were on I admitted that I forgot that the back lights don't automatically turn on like the front lights. He gave me a warning and let me go.
I'm not a fucking idiot but I was drinking quit a bit and the cop bought the story. I picked up the Taco bell I was driving for and will never forget this lesson.

The consensus seems to be that people do it by mistake. Headlight switches I'm familiar with have two steps: first click, the parking lights, next click, the headlights. I can see how the second click could be missed. And then in the daytime (or even at night with bright street lights) not notice that the headlights aren't on.
Nobody said anything like, "to save electricity," or, "to make my headlight bulbs last longer."
In my state the law requires headlights on if it's raining. I see about 90% compliance with that. And some of those only have the parking lights on.
Parking lights seem a bit obsolete, now that hazard flashers are ubiquitous. They serve best as emergency marker lights for the occasion of a burned out headlight. _________________ Richard

Those arabs. They have a whole different attitude about cars. They love their camrys - almost all of the ones in that video are camrys. _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. I don't know why people do it on clear days in broad daylight....high beams perplex and anger me even more.
There is a regulation here in Australia where all new motorbikes after a certain year have to have Low beam automatically on when the ignition is started.
And there are road signs in some areas (have seen them in the Blue Mountains) that tell you to do it for extra visibility......if someone can't see a giant hunk of metal moving in the broad daylight because it didn't have its parkers on they should not be driving.... _________________ www.equinoxoz.com

at night, i typically refrain from switching the headlamps on when i'm backing out of a parking space, especially when the vehicle is facing the window of an establishment where people are gathered, such as restaurants or bars for example, both as a courtesy to the diners, or whoever it is, and since the parking-, reverse-gear-indicator- and brake-lights provide the essential illumination for the activity of backing a vehicle out of a parking space anyways.
also, i am a somewhat frequent renter of cars, and can admit to having once or twice unintentionally driven out of a rental car garage onto a brightly lit airport road without immediately realizing that i had only switched on the parking lights, and not the headlamps (which i switched on as soon as the street became less well lit)... these were mostly occasions where i was very tired and the particular model of rental car had funky panel controls.
