I have a Noisering and love it but I think the noise out is a tad thin sounding. The a-118 noise has a nice heft that you can sculpt to something thinner if needed.

Yes, nice thick noise from the A-118, also has a choice of white or red / blue noise, and a random output.

I have four old portable mini B/W TV's that also have AM and FM radio, the 3.5mm mono headphone out's are great noise sources. Used them here yesterday extensively, you can really hear the noise sources being used:

The A-118 is really nice indeed. I've heard good things about the Wogglebug, but haven't tried it. Anyone care to chime in?

Wogglebug clocked at audio rate vomits scary noises...but I prefer to use it for modulations purpose..and I also prefer to filter (lp, bp, hp) the sound of a "classic" analog white noise... With the a118 you have that classic white noise ready to filter hyper and you have also an already filtered blue and red noises (the red one is veryvery FAT) plus the random out is really fun w00t

I tend to use the Trogotronic 666M, at certain settings it gives a thunderous noise source for percussion.

The Snazzy FX dreamboat heavily modulated is another good one for creating a different kind of "noise" source.

As mentioned by others the Doepfer one and the Walekko Noisering are both great too.

a-118!
they vary a bit, but an essential module, even with noiserings and a zorlon. And even the m/666, it's cheap, you should have a real analog noise source.

A118 at the moment, thinking about switching to an STG .SHN for the size saving.

A Noisering through a JAG then send some that through another Noisering and JAG combo and all the rest of the CV fun into a GWS into a Trogo 666 that's jacked full. After that, more CV and signals into a Plague Bearer, Sound of Shadows, and a Trogo 676. Holy freaking hell...

Why just have random when you can make random noise more random and distort the hell out of it?

several different ones. because they all sound different. and give different result with s/h etc. not just the difference between analog and digital but also between, say doepfer and korg. also try a radio on static. you might/will have to boost the signal to get a decent -5/+5V output.

Sorry I cant help myself, new noise module on the horizon: Quantum Rainbow.

Two outputs each of White, Pink, Red, Blue and Purple noise. All the noise you need for modulation, S&H, percussion etc. In 6hp.

I also use a Noisering because it's the only white noise source I have, but from the looks of it, that's pretty good.

noisering + .shn here as well, very satisfied with both. .shn makes some fantastic snares, and combined with the .com and a trigger source there's a lot of CV pattern weirdness to be had in addition to the noise.

had: a118, a117.....slightly miss the a118

have: analogue radio, SH-NZ (thin sounding noise, but fine for S+H etc...)

but then the cyclebox does noise ’n stuff, so i’m not sure i even need one noise source now

radio noise is fun:

Korg MS20, it has a noise generator that produces white and pink noise at a pretty high volume, plugged into an A-138d. I use it for my snares, I love that thing!

I have A-118, Noisering and Cyclebox. Of the three I'd have to say that (to my ears) the A118 has the perfect combinations of noise and randomness. It's on my 'keep forever' list, right next to my A-148.

Dieter Doepfer customized my A-118 when I sent it in because the noise was too quiet. He replaced a transistor and added a resistor. Now it's very loud noise (like the mentioned MS-20) and leaves nothing to be desired...^^

I often use the random out from the A-118, too.

I've been using the noise from the DrumDokta DDB expansion module.

I have A-118, Noisering and Cyclebox. Of the three I'd have to say that (to my ears) the A118 has the perfect combinations of noise and randomness. It's on my 'keep forever' list, right next to my A-148.

yeah, i had that combo too, but figured that having a wogglebug covered a lot of S+H duties, so i whittled the a118/ a148 down into the SH-NZ instead. that also has slew, which is handy....and does crazy things if you put too much noise into the S+H circuit (need to use that trick more actually...)

could see me back with the a118 one day though...

yeah, once you realise oscs contain a fair amount of noise, especially when FM-d heavily, a separate noise source seems a little bit like overkill

i guess it’s got its place sometimes though

maybe i’m just spoilt for oscs seriously, i just don't get it

I have a Noisering and love it but I think the noise out is a tad thin sounding. The a-118 noise has a nice heft that you can sculpt to something thinner if needed.

noisering was NOT meant for this, the original version didn't have noise out please don' judge on that. The a-118 rocks, it's an extra on the noisering.

and the Plague Bearer is my fav CV source. NO input crank it an go, add some to the Hi/Lo cv ins and explore. it can be very random and scratchy like an old 78 or more controlled.

Elby S/H and Noisering. One for each case - never underestimate the usefulness of a noise source.

I am currently building Roman's Buchla Source of Uncertainty euro-clone.

Pretty stoked about that.

In the mean time, Ive been using the Silent way LFO with the NOISE setting cranked up with no other modulations.

Ive also pumped audio down the the SW pipe, including noise only from virtual synths and lo-fi'd recordings that are over abused with "vinyl simulators" and other shiz. Soundforge has a Tone generator that can be set up to produce various spectra noise audio files of any length.

all really good ideas - must try some of them out.

keep totally forgetting about half of what silent way can/ could do!

what i’d really like it to do is let you trigger the step LFO from note ons, transpose it up and down, and have a “random” button on it!

where is the “noise” setting - on the normal LFO plugin? must check that out - i only ever use it for clocks!

I'm using portable TV sets that also have FM/AM radio that are great noise sources.

On this track you can hear four TVs as noise sources.

Right next to the waveform display on the top row. Next to random, above swing.

tIB came up with an ace idea yesterday, to emulate the repeating patterns of the noisering: sample some actual noise, or record some off the radio. drop it into your project (in Logic, Cubase etc..). then cut it up into bar chunks and arrange them here and there, looping round for a while before changing. pump it out of the ES3 (or similar) into a sample and hold or quantizer. sweeeeeet! thumbs up

Nice one, no noisering here, but will try this with the phonogene, splicing noise sampled from HH808 and sent through Quantimator!

that’s the idea - to REPLACE the noisering with this method. won’t be exactly the same obviously, but might come close

Noisering here, but also have used shortwave and am grundig. I like the radio option because with a flick of dial you have all different flavors of noise and partial audio makes for cool unexpected things.
