at one point, i was buying vinyl every week and had well over 1000 singles and albums (mostly electronic dance music).
there are a handful in the group that continue to amaze, delight and compel me.
here are a few:
mr oizo - last night a dj killed my dog REMIX
plaid - spudink
BOC - dayvan cowboy (i dunno, im really a sucker for this tune)
in particular, these tunes ALWAYS get played when im having a special music-listening moment. _________________ soundcloud | bandcamp

Pretty much all of the albums released by "Download" I think have stood the trials of time... in fact, some of their material is still ahead of its time.
My favorite of all is still: Download - The Eyes of Stanley Pain.
In fact, that was one of the major albums that pushed me into the analog/modular universe, as opposed to being strictly digital like I was for quite some time. Cevin Key and all of his creative uses with his gear really inspired me. _________________ Prometheus Burning

yes! puppy for me. cleanse fold and manipulate was a very powerful influence on me in my teens. i still enjoy listening to it sometimes and recognize it as a critical influence, but when i listen to it it has not stood the test of time for me (at least not yet =) _________________ soundcloud | bandcamp

Ultramarine -_Bel Air_ (whole album) and _Every Man and Woman is a Star_ (whole album but Saratoga in particular).
Material, _Hallucination Engine_, worldbeat jazzy dub fusion, Laswell and dozens of special guests.
The Orb, the Blue Room, the 39:59 extended single version. Can't hear it enough.
Hallucinogen _Twisted_
and as mentioned, Seefeel, _Quique_, particularly the first two tracks.
Others come and go but these never leave the rotation. |

i used to have a snipped from ozio's dj killed my dog as my phone ring. a bit from the electro mashup track. man i wish he made music like that these days. his newer stuff will definately NOT stand the test of time that is for sure. analog worms attack was the best album ever. _________________ .

Ok, a big huge +1 for dOWNLOAD and early Skinny Puppy.
I hate to say it but, as much as i love Skinny Puppy i can easily get burnt out on it especially with all those little goth-kid followers that just dont fucking get it. (Actually the same can also be said for bauhaus)
With dOWNLOAD i just cant seem to make myself sick of it. It seems every time i listen to it i hear something new. Alot of really subtle shit going on there.
BOC almost has the same effect with me but i do go in phases where i am completely sick of it.
Also on that list, i have to put DEVO, Gary Numan, and Kraftwerk. That shit still sounds like its from the future. |

Where are these "kids" you refer to? All the Goths in Chicago are 45, fat and/or balding.
Remission and Bites are classics, for sure.
I'll never get tired of Quique, either.
I think everyone has different notions of what has aged well, certainly based on personal preference. Anything with a great deal of care, craft, and/or a little magic and luck will stand up over time.
The technology/production, in my opinion, is the greatest factor contributing to the poor shelf life of music in the last, say, 40 years.
There is, historically, in relation to electronic music, the DX7 problem(electropop after '84), the ruin it with metal guitar problem (industrial after about '90), the rainsticks and chants problem (ambient becomes world, 1988ish), and the poorly deployed 303 problem (1987-present, sadly). All contributors to the poor aging of electronic music.
Imagine how badly the last 8 years of too clean laptoppery/indietronica will sound in 2020. Not to mention mashups.
That being said, electronic classics strictly:
Selected Ambient Works 2 by Aphex Twin
Planetary Unfolding by Michael Stearns
Structures from Silence by Steve Roach
Geography by Front 242
Big Science by Laurie Anderson
Silver Apples of the Moon by Morton Subotnick
Dare by the Human League (yeah, that's right.)
Love's Secret Domain by Coil
Electro-Acoustic Music (nonesuch LP) by Iannis Xenakis
Pauline Oliveros' electronic work, all of it.
This is just warming up . . . _________________ http://soundcloud.com/lightpolite

For me it's:
Hawkwind- In Search of Space
Skinny puppy- MTPI
Dead Can Dance- Aeon
Firewater-The Ponzi Scheme
Eurythmics- Sweet dreams
Bauhaus- In the Flat Field
Chrome- Half Machine Lip MOves
I could go on, but we don't have time or space for everything... |

Yeah around these parts (Toronto) we have an infestation of emo kids and gravers (the bastard spawn of goths and ravers)
Usually this accompanies the opening of a Hot Topic but fortunately we dont have that chain here.
Hmm.. aphex twin, how the hell did i forget that?! |

Heh, figured he'd be the "special guest" for that, given the other performers. |

You didn't ask for it, but here it is - a starter for ten, in no particular order or significance:
Bernard Parmegiani - Violostres
Autechre - LP5
Pan sonic - Aaltopiiri
Ministry - Twitch
The Orb - Orbus Terrarum
Future Sound of London - ISDN
Supersilent - 6
Muslimgauze - Izlamaphobia
Popol Vuh - In den Gärten Pharaos
Dopplereffekt - Calabi-Yau Space
That's stopping at ten. I could go on. And on. And on...
My fave electronic track of all time is the theme tune to the original BBC TV show of 'Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy', featuring less two minutes of nevertheless mind-melting banjo/VCS3 goodness (for a 5-year old, anway!). |
