Wrong thread AND wrong subforum.

"A meme (/ˈmiːm/; meem)[1] is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture."[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena"

i just found it funny that the "eurocrack" name (which is clearly a meme of its own, although not in the "captioned image with some text in impact" sense) is so widely spread that we actually have a local experimental hiphop group by that name. i would guess the producer is into modular stuff.

otherwise, thank you for your friendly attitude and sorry for any bad feelings caused.

edit: in case the wording was unclear, that is not me nor any of my friends so not an advert for the gig. i know who those people are and i've listened to quite a lot of stuff they have done before, but the point is i just thought it was funny that there's actually a group called "e.u.r.o.c.r.a.c.k." out there.

Macros fucking suck. They're the reason why people keep recycling the same stupid pictures over and over.

But - The Conversation is brilliant. Gene Hackman plays the main character, an audio surveillance specialist, whose job requires him to obsess over sounds. Excellent thriller and character study on lost perspective. Sound by Walter Murch, who between this and THX1138 should be required listening (if there were any such thing) for creative audio in cinema.

It has mythical status, was hard to get for a time, and is the root of several running jokes like "PM'd for Maths".

That's pretty cool - thanks for sharing the vid, and for enlightening me.
Looks like a fun toy... which is unfortunately how I see Euroracks due to their compact size and small plugs... I prefer the more hefty feel of the 5Us.

Maths... so it's a brand/model... nifty.

Actually, "Maths" is the name of the module, made by "Make Noise":

It provides a variety of control voltage functions.

It's a dual slope generator with some other stuff. The 5U equivs would be the CGS VCS, the Oakley VRG, or the Modcan Dual LFO.
Slopes are a big part of modular patching.

Downloaded it specifically for this... It also took extra work as it's a ttf and I'm using Linux (hence the weird aliasing around the letters, but hey, makes it look like a super professional doge)

Edit: for other modular doge here's the PNG i made with the transparency layer intact (again, all "doge-grade" aliased)

I LOVE this place for the interesting people and opinions expressed here. The lack of heavy moderation. The anarchic sense of humour. I've been a browser since the beginning in 2007, a member since early 2008, and was a mod from 2008-2012. I LOVE it here! Where's the shame in that? smile It's the best online forum I have ever found, bar none. I don't think not owning a modular precludes one from membership here. It just rocks on so many levels! And there's always the MS-20, VCS 3, Wiard, Serge and Buchla lust to keep me happy! I still hate Eurorack though, but do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, and I'd NEVER stop someone else from having a helluva lotta fun with one!

Love and hugs this (slightly drunken, I must admit...) Yuletide Season!

I checked on it a few times, and the impression I got was a wall of euro modules with only 2-3 patched to each other at any one time. He looked flummoxed and clueless, and succeeded in helping keep modular synths an underground sport.

Yeah, sorry, but I'm not going to read 3 fucking pages on what was already an 8 hour waste of time.
Only if the defense were weak would it require 3 pages of text to stultify the reader. I'm a huge fan of the first two records and all of the weirdo B-sides of that era. I've got original copies of all of it. "Gish" was the first and is still the only record that I ever invested the time into learning in its entirety. I've met Corgan several times and he has always been magnanimous and gracious.

The Siddhartha modular performance was of a very low standard with very low return for the listener. A long-winded text, of which I read the first page, won't save that long-winded performance. At least the text wasn't embarrassing.

You'd think as a modular synth enthusiast that you'd give more credence to the practice of spending time chasing something that may not be there.

I agree that Corgan's performance was dull and poorly representative of the equipment on display but the linked article is more a defense of Chicago as a city with a rich history of musical and artistic experimentation than a defense of Billy Corgan's whimsy. Also, Siddhartha is a great book, you should reconsider leaving it after a single page.

Anyways, back to the memes! It's motherfucking bacon yo

Please re-read what I typed. You have jumbled some things together. I read the entirety of "Siddhartha" years ago in college. I hadn't mentioned whether I'd read it or not. I stopped reading the article after the first page as the article was offered in defense of Mr. Corgan's performance and… well, I don't remember the article in detail as it wasn't particularly well written and was probably meandering around the core point. If it was indeed using all of Chicago's musical history as a foundation of defense in support of what the average layperson could easily judge as being sub-par, then I'll just fall back to my earlier statement of needing a whole lot to back up very little.

Sorry, the way the word "text" is placed in this paragraph it reads as though the "long winded text" you are referring to is Siddhartha. When you you say "at least the text wasn't embarrassing" I assumed you were using "text" to refer to Siddhartha again. My apologies.

Not just yet. Still in prototype. But I can reveal the following features (with more to come):

ThreeZero Oscillator - Simultaneously available sine, cosine, and tangent outputs. CV response is 120V/Oct @ 60Hz. Extremely accurate tracking over an impressive 0.0 octave range!

Filter - Can create any of the famous tones from the album, Short Bus.

Envelope Generator - #10, A2, A6, A7, A8, and A10 sizes.

One Step/One Channel Sequencer (An innovation in Eurorack!) - With Start, Stop, and Reset inputs, and Trigger Out on each step, not only can sequences of up to 1 step be easily generated, but by connecting multiple OS/OC's together, the ground is the limit! (Think SQ-10 divided by 12.3) Internal clock is factory set at 60Hz. Perfect for mains hum emulation!

S&H - can be purchased with 2 books (2400 points) of Sperry & Hutchinson Green Stamps.

HFO - 30kHz to Infinity. Never before heard in the synth world!

Slag - Slew Limiter? Lag Processor? What's the difference? Perfect Portmanteau!

VCA's - None

This is one you absolutely can do without!

Play with it and modulate it.
I found some modules were a bit boring when I first got them but they really came alive after I plugged a load of modulators in.

The Dave Smith one is just Dave Smith being a black smith because I couldn't think of any good options for his name (as I said earlier not very creative). So I decided to go more funny route by making him waaaay too buff and putting him in front of a wall of booze to poke fun at him always having a bottle or two of booze in the background of almost every video he makes.

The Tom Oberheim one is best understood if you break his last name into ober and heim, then translate the two parts from german to english. Ober means top/upper/higher and heim means home. So Tom has tom drums while he is on top of a home.

At the very least I’ll say it’s drawn well.
sduck
It's definitely lowbrow.

"humor/satire" that targets a subset of a group of people is usually not really... well, humorous. Especially when you forget the cape.

Depends on the group. If it is an already downtrodden or powerless group I agree. When it's the elite it can be very funny (e.g., political satire).

Sure, all generalizations are false, etc, etc. There are exceptions to every "rule". But in this context, the group can be seen as All Modular Synth Users. Within that small context, this "satire/joke/whatever" targets a small subset, and pokes fun of them in a not very flattering way (and not in the context of a meme, which is what the thread is about, anyway). Now, imagine if it had been a similar joke/satire/whatever about a different subset, like say, LGBT modular users, or perhaps female modular users. Would it be OK if the poster of this "joke/satire/whatever" then defended it by saying "look up satire, it's just a joke, get a sense of humor, etc"?

I don't think LGBT people and 5U users are subject to the same social pressures. Poor example.

And yet we have memes which essentially take the piss out of all aspects of modulars and modular users? People already jokingly mention the 5U = ponytail neckbeard stereotypes. I drew how I imagined it and it somehow offends people even though it's obviously not a representation of most people on the forum. I'm a fat bastard myself, and if anything it represents me more than most people! lol

And comparing 5U users to LGBT/women modular users like they're a persecuted minority? Fuuucking hell that's beyond stupidity. The only struggle they maybe face is needing a bigger warehouse to do Berlin School ambient, perhaps?

Some dry shites on here. meh

clouds doesn't make sounds. it processes sounds. even the alternate modes are quite different from one another.

sorry for dumping on the h8 train, guess having half of those modules, and still using them daily, gives me a reason to speak up.

i think the A/D conversion sounds bad at almost every sample rate, not in an endearing or usable way, and the reverb sounds like something out of garageband in 2003. the looping mode doesn't have much use in my workflow and the spectral madness or whatever does nothing for me. so... it's perfectly sensible to say i don't like how clouds sounds seriously, i just don't get it

no way jose. simply that for a noob learning their way around a modular, certain modules are better suited for learning than others - be it simplicity, versatility or whatever.

their popularity is probably an indication of the amount of advanced users vs beginners more than anything. but no, popularity doesn't invalidate their usefulness in a system.
Yes Powder
dooj88 wrote:

I would argue that that complex modules like Clouds, Plaits, Tempi, Morphagene, Disting, and even Batumi would not be the best starter modules, but often end up being just that. Maybe it's the blinkenlichten? seriously, i just don't get it

Quote:
but no, popularity doesn't invalidate their usefulness in a system.

Never said it did. I didn't even design that rack with the intention of making a bad system. It's just kind of a basic-bitch cliché'd system design for an instrument that's supposed to have near-infinite customizability.

I have nothing against any of the modules individually. Hell, I own a Maths and Wogglebug, and just received a Function in the mail. (I also have been thinking of picking up a Clouds secondhand...) It'd just be nice to see more variety and creative thought in a lot of starter systems.
cptnal
As a noob-at-heart, the variety is pretty daunting when you're starting out. You're bound to go for stuff that is more visible, better documented, supported, and all the things that go along with a larger user base. Sure, once you get the hang of it you can go nuts with the obscure stuff, but those old favourites are still in circulation, even if you offload them to the second hand market.

At a club and kinda drunk, so forgive me if the spelling and grammar here sucks.
I’m not going to go over the east-coast/wesr-cost thing here because there are a million threads already dedicated to arguing about that.

I meant “New Coast” to mean paradigms of synthesis that weren’t really explored during the first generation— primarily due to technical limitations. Granular synthesis, physical modeling, digital input methods, etc.

“No Coast” being methods that don’t seem to conform with the overall evolution of synthesis as the market sees it. In extreme cases, they may even challenge how we define what a “synthesizer” even is. (see: Gieskes, or Bastl’s motor/servo/solenoid modules)
