Ardcore rotating pattern emitter

Post by paperwork » Sat Jul 06, 2013 3:14 pm

Howdy!

I'm just getting started with modular synth stuff, but the Ardcore is one of the first modules I picked up. I'm a videogame developer by day, so I'm hopeful I can use some of that realtime programming knowledge to make some cool Ardcore sketches! This is my first, just thought I'd share here & see if someone else finds it useful or has any feedback:

The "rotating pattern emitter":

I saw a video recently demoing an unreleased sequencer module based on this principle, and thought I'd try to replicate it.(edit: the Delptronics Trigger Man - http://delptronics.com/triggerman.php -- way more powerful than my little sketch, definitely on the to-buy list!) The idea is that there are actually very few possible permutations of a step-sequenced pattern, if you take "rotation" into account. So like "on, off, off, off" is the same pattern as "off, on, off, off," but the latter is rotated one degree to the right. This sketch takes in a clock and emits two pattern streams, each of which uses two of the Ardcore's knobs to select the pattern and its rotation. Right now it only uses 4-step sequences. It'd be super easy to extend that to 8-step, etc., but I'm kind of unsure about the interface. Like I don't want to crowd that knob with a ton of patterns to scroll through. Maybe it won't be an issue; something to try out!

Here's an audio demo using this sketch in combination with the 4ms Rotating Clock Divider to quickly build out some (mildly) interesting drum + synth patterns:

Thanks for the sketch Paperwork! This looks interesting and I'll have to try it out later this week.

Thx y'all :)

I built a new version which emits patterns of different lengths:

Channel 1 outputs patterns in 4 or 8 steps, and channel 2 patterns in 3, 5 or 6 steps. Definitely much more fun!

Here's a little sketch I recorded with it this afternoon. Nothing special, but you can hear the different patterns interacting. I'm enjoying doing drum programming by just dialing knobs, with no visual feedback ... that kind of shift in process is a big part of why I wanted to get into modulars :)
