Re: Adding warmth / saturation / crud

add tube / tape saturation and cruddiness / warmth to my mixes. I can get part of the way using filters, but I'm hoping to save them for other tasks, and want to maybe find a solution that sits in between my modular and my Portastudio. Sounds like you already have what you need--just run the signal...

Re: Any ideas to help digital tone?

Yes I am thinking tubes also, but maybe a tube pre amp like berhringer's mic100 with a 12ax7 in it, and it's got a gain control and limiter etc. It's for microphones but has 1/4" input and output jacks . But I have also been considering picking up a korg monotron for the analog filter based on MS20...

Re: How do you describe modular to laypeople?

You probably know synthesizers from the 1980s or EDM. They are electronic instruments that combine hardwired circuits to allow for a variety of sounds. Just like building a modular sectional sofa or your own PC lets you choose your own parts, modular synths let you choose the individual circuits you...

Re: Broadcast

A great band, one of my favourites along with Stereolab from the past 20 years. Stereolab did release Broadcast's first 2 singles on their Duophonic label, so there was obviously some mutual appreciation going on there. But I think comparisons between the two are often a bit unfair and do neither b...

Re: Utility filters...

Sometimes a LPG instead of—or even in addition to—a VCA can be enough to tame extreme sounds. But I also have a double filter module with HP/BP/LP modes to handle most of the taming i need.

Re: One big purchase: Sequential or Deckard's?

I think a lot depends on what you want out of it. For me the Rev2 is the best option for versatility—mod matrix, effects that can be modulated, the gated seq, audio rate LFOs, etc. It’s great for pads, sound design, atmospherics, and such. But it takes a bit of effort to make big-bottomed chords due...

Why are almost all of the entries from before 1990?

No Björk, BoC, Broadcast, James Blake, Kaytlin Aurelia Smith, LCD SS, Wu Tang, Thom Yorke, or...Miley Cyrus?!

Re: Sequential Pro 3

is the ladder filter on the Pro 3 supposed to always sound distorted? i just got one a couple weeks ago (new) and the ladder filter is pretty much a distortion generator and i'm wondering if it's broken. for example, take preset bank P8 patch 85 (super soft? or something like that)... load it up.. ...

Yep, bass amp would deliver better results on synth unless you specifically want a mid-ranged sound. For Rhodes a Twin Reverb is a lovely match though.

intellijel quad vca has a 6db boost switch (2x volume) per channel with a switch per channel for it
Yeah sounds like you need VCAs that go over unity gain rather than waveshapers.

Re: Sequential Pro 3

There are a lot of top shelf synths that don't have the specs you're asking about. Specs that are super important to one person aren''t to another I agree. Do all parameters have a resolution of 0-128 7-bit only? No What is the resolution? Can you modulate the envelope-stages? Yes Oh cool! It might...

Re: Multi-purpose/function gear

Most of the Elektron boxes and the Sequential Pro 3 can function as effects boxes with p-lockable parameters that you can sync to an external clock. Pro 2 as well and it can do CV i/o sequencing. True. There are quite a few synths that can be used just as straight up CV sequencers: Analog Four, Sub...

As much as I like FM, I find simple additive often works well for marimba sounds.
Yeah marimba is a lot different than vibraphone and Glockenspiel since the bars are wooden and the attack is softer.

One of my favorites. When I first heard them I thought they were following on the coattails of Stereolab and Portishead with the kraut and 60s/70s soundtrack influences. But when I started listening to them more I heard what made them different—the late 60s psych vibe, musique concrète elements, BBC...

I seem to remember there is one other remake of the 2600 from a small boutique manufacturer, but the name escapes me. It was also expensive (but not as much as the one from Korg).
