The first modular purchase I made was a case+PSU and a bunch of modules (VCO, VCF, VCA, EG, LFO, Mixer and Multiple - all Doepfer, BTW), so that from the outset I had an entire synthesizer voice in modular form. To this basic setup I then started to add a couple of modules each month: a sequencer an...

Yeah! Drop the MN Function (everything it offers is duplicated by the MN Maths) and invest in at least one mixer module. I would recommend the 4HP Mix module by Manhattan Analog, which would leave you with space for another (albeit tiny) module, perhaps a VC-Slew.

How about this ass-bad, idiotic, super-sized module?

Image

Leave it on the desktop, not taking up valuable space for REAL modules.

I just gotta get me one of those.

The Doepfer A-157-1/2/3 Trigger Matrix Sequencer puts on quite a light show too - totally necessary though.

If you are contemplating a modular rhythm section, why not eschew the concept of 'drum modules' altogether and get down to brass roots, creating your own unique drum sounds from a bunch of basic modules? I find this approach very satisfying however, the major drawback is that you need a shit load of...

Over the years I have purchased the following oscillators: 2 x A-110-1 2 x A-110-2 2 x Eowave Titan Although they've moved about a bit as my modular system has developed and expanded, I haven't felt the need to part with any of 'em. Money is tight, man! I think long and hard before buying any piece ...

Apparently, he's clocking them all via an Alesis SR18 Drum Machine, which you can see in the video @3:06.

I agree that 8 x GRP-A4's is a bit excessive.

I thought this post could use a link to the beast in question: http://www.makenoisemusic.com/blackgoldsharedsystem.shtml I do like the 'old school" black panel styling, but I'm not really into MakeNoise stuff in general, and the $4,500 price tag is too rich for me - you could buy a shed load of Doep...

Kudos to all you DIY guys. These DIY systems are spectacular.

My soldering skills leave a lot to be desired and, as a consequence, my modular rig is 100% non-DIY.

I really want a Penrose Quantizer, though, so I may have a 1% DIY modular by this time next year.

One might equally ask the question; why use MIDI when we have Sequencers, Switches, Clocks and Logic? It is all down to personal preference in the end, I think. The only thing for which I use MIDI is to connect a keyboard to the modular for manual sequencer transposition. My workflow is entirely mod...

You could definitely do with another envelope generator, although the MN Function could suffice. Maybe just a Doepfer A-140 ADSR or an A-142.1 VC Decay (both 8HP) seeing as you're already planning to employ a TipTop Z4000 (excellent choice, BTW).

There are a plethora of trigger sequencers and drum modules out there in modularland, so why settle on an external drum machine when you can build your own modular percussion unit?

DR-55 Man? That's ultra-retro! The first drum machine I ever owned.

Yo, WickedOne ! The new Roland gear sure looks the Dog's Bollocks, but the System 1M when used as a module takes up an entire row of Euro rack space; far better in my opinion to leave the System-1m in its desktop configuration and release 84HP of space for sequencing modules. Just my tuppenceworth. ...

My first thought was that the A-111.5 is no longer in production and may be difficult to source, so you may want to replace the A-111.5 with one of the Pittsburgh voice modules, for example. The Doepfer Quad units (Quad LFO, LFO/VCO, Complex EG, ADSR, etc) are a very good idea if you want a lot of f...

Being more of a Eurocrack head I have the same problem with Doepfer modules. A lot of wigglers when mentioning Doepfer gear just give the A100 number and, 9 times out of 10, I have to look the module up on the Doepfer website just to make sure. Most Doepfer panels also have an acronym describing the...
