Re: center negative vs center positive
Boss used center ground, because DC jacks with normalization for outer contact are extremely common, so the pedal can switch the battery in and out of circuit depending on whether external power is plugged in. That's why. (They use the ring terminal for the input jack to connect ground for the circu...

Re: 2021 : which soldering station, desoldering gun, etc,?
I went from a 40W pencil iron to a FX888D. The jump wasn't in temperature or ease of soldering, for me, so much as being able to use it a few seconds after turning it on (as opposed to waiting a few minutes), and also being able to change the tip if need be.

Re: Actuating a SPDT with a jack
If I'm understanding you, what you want is to use the normalisation contact on a mono jack, where if nothing is plugged in, then the jack connects to the normalized contact.

Re: Teepee resistors
Topic title is misleading -- as far as I know, teepee resistors are when you need to put two resistors in series to get the value you want for a one-resistor location on a PCB. (One resistor per hole, twist the other two ends together at the top and solder.) What he seems to be describing are standi...

What is even worse is when it's a board you designed, and you can't email someone else to bitch about why doesn't this work. At least with things like Mutable PCBs, there is a chance someone else had the same problem.

The ALT resistor locations can be used instead. If you later get a tempco resistor, you can remove the ALT resistor and place the tempco.

Random voltage source and a comparator, to get random gates. Make it a CV-able comparator, and you can change the probability on the fly.

Re: Laser cutting pcbs?
With absolutely no expertise whatsoever, I'd guess that the copper layer would be the nasty part -- lasers that can cut metal are more expensive than ones that can cut plastic (or plastic like material.)

I have a pair of tweezers I got from the supermarket, originally intended for use on eyebrows. I was later given some hard black plastic tweezers with various tips, but I prefer my stainless steel cheapy tweezers. For magnification, I have a lens on a gooseneck stand with a built-in illumination LED...

Re: Why is it fun to BUILD modular synthesizers?
I did the same with guitars first - played them, then wanted to play one I had made so made an acoustic, then an electric and wanted to play it through stompboxes I had made nd through a home-made valve amp and speaker cab. Modular synths seemed like a natural step.... Guitar pedal DIY was a gatewa...

Re: Eagle Files - VCO, Filters, Touch, and SeqSw
The Wave-Ctl and Sine-Trim trimpots are interactive, to a degree -- you'll need to adjust both at once to get the best sine wave. Make sure the panel pot is set to Sine before doing so (I don't wanna talk about it...) and flick it back to the other waveform after trimming the Sine to check how the o...

Re: Module which unexpectedly blew you away?
Mutable Elements. I soldered one because I figured it might be good for making "more natural" sounds, but I didn't expect it to sound good to the point where I had to force myself to not use it in patches. RYO 3xVCA. It's such a humble little module, but it's a real workhorse, useful in damn near ev...

Re: Eagle Files - VCO, Filters, Touch, and SeqSw
1 - Infinity means omit the resistor entirely. I put in the values in my schematic to comply with Mark's table, and the result should match the panel. I included the omitted resistor locations in case someone wanted, say, a dual vco with ramp on both sides and no square. 2 - I used 100kB everywhere,...

The only good way of reading this schematic involves printing it out, and spending some quality time with some highlighters to try and trace wtf is going on. (Ibanez SB7 Bass Synth pedal.)

I use Seeedstudio's CAM file for generating 2-layer PCBs, with Eagle 7.5.0. All the holes above 3.2mm in diameter are in the Dimension layer, as is the board outline.
