Re: Power supply reliability

Now, think about what a single component failure in your power supply could mean for all of the modules in your system. And why having a 5V rail without any form of over-voltage protection might not be a good idea. I had a power supply that used a 7805 regulator for +5V. The input to the regulator ...

Re: Universal Slope Love

That explains it - to be honest I think I have always misunderstood AR envelopes as having the release time starting immediately after the attack time is completed, regardless of a sustained gate being present. Probably because I am using MI Stages as my main env generator, and that is how it behav...

Re: Universal Slope Love

This is a great overview, thanks so much! A question regarding the Contour 1, is it actually possible to patch up an ASR envelope with it? I looked through the manual and didnt find a reference to this - and the gate input doesnt actually seem to be used for this. Here's what the manual says, "The ...

What is a bipolar VCA, other than a DC-coupled ring modulator (four quadrant multiplier)?

First check the power supply. Have you adjusted the trimpot? What voltages do you measure on the output and end out?

I built a couple of NLC Sloth Chaos. I found an LED that works great, if you're building these.

Re: Your favorite scope for DIY under $300 USD

I'm getting on very well with the Rigol DS1102Z-E. Yes, it can display very low frequencies such as LFOs, similarly to a CRT scope. In auto trigger mode you get a line that moves up and down. I used it to look at the NLC Sloth Chaos outputs. It's very handy with the numeric readouts for frequency an...

Re: Universal Slope Love

You're right. Contour 1 always resets to zero. The voltage on the input sets the low point of the cycle. I'm going to look at how the others behave when triggered or cycling and there's something patched to the input.

Re: Universal Slope Love

Contour 1's reset on a trigger during a cycle has an interesting angle. It actually resets to the current voltage on the Input jack (which is normally left unpatched during envelope generation and is hence zero volts). Adding an oscillator to the Input while triggering faster than the cycle time int...

Re: Universal Slope Love

One difference with contour 1 is that the trigger will reset during rise, so it's more of a sync input. Also has very good v/Oct tracking. 171-2 will retrigger only during fall IIRC. Both 171-2 and contour 1 have independent rise/fall shapes in log/exp. On Contour 1 both are CVable independently. C...

Re: First magic smoke!

I'm not a beginner, but I got bit by an incorrectly assembled cable today. The cable had been working fine. I swapped in a different module and used that cable to power it. The new module had a shrouded 10-pin header - for safety ! Well, good thing that module had reverse power protection, because t...

http://www.genusmodu.com/products/libb.html Thanks! Will I need 6 of the GenusModu for my system? (because of the number of modules). Maybe 1 in each row and 2 in the "in between" rows under the rails. https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1524758 The LIBB has 14 shrouded headers. Do you anticip...

Re: First magic smoke!

Do you know what was wrong with the power cable? I make my own all the time, making sure that the red strip always goes to pin 1 (marked with a triangle on the housing). I use a small vise to compress the connector evenly. Did you check the power rails on the module before applying power? Always use...

Re: Love that smell

The smell I remember the most vividly was the miasma emitted from the first ham radio kits that I built in the 1960s. Heathkit, Knightkit, and even a Hallicrafters VTVM kit. Must have been due to the vacuum tubes in them, warming everything up, and the dust wafting out into the air. Not to mention t...

Re: can you damage VCOs with feedback?

Feedback is a useful technique. No fears of damage! Your patch is often called cross-modulation. It will produce less harsh sounds if the oscillator CV inputs can do linear frequency modulation. You can get more control also by putting VCAs in between the oscillator out and CV in and controlling the...

Re: Befaco Rampage: Successful Build Log

I built my Rampage from a full kit, but I sourced parts for the Befaco A*B+C. If you're new to DIY and soldering, you might want to consider some full kits, because sourcing parts isn't simple. With any full kit, be sure to do a complete inventory of what comes with the kit before you dive in to the...

Re: Eurorack beginner's advice

Assuming you're starting with modular synthesis at the same time as Eurorack, I'd recommend learning and practicing the basics. Start with mostly single function modules, VCO, Envelope Generator, VCA, VCF, Mixer - modules that you don't need to read the manual very much, but can just tell from the p...

Eurorack modules:

2hp Verb
Clouds
uBurst
Pico DSP
FX AID XL
Disting MK3 V3.10

Before I had any Eurorack I used a Lexicon MPX-1 rack mount. I gave it to a friend.
