Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
The improved sparkly bits I think is down to to my valve amps. Valves are known for high end sparkle due to harmonics. I wonder if the things you are hearing from the Schiit are due to its trademarked "Continuity" output stage. Not sure. I thought the continuity mode only kicked in at very high vol...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Now the Schiit Asgard 3 headphone amp is a different story :woah: It's an instant eye opener after being used to driving my Hifiman HE-400i headphones with the Marantz headphone out. The music is much more alive as dub put it earlier. I think I'm starting to understand about the transients. I am hea...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Headphone amp and Phono amp have arrived but I'll put the review of the Cambridge Audio Solo first because it's easier: I couldn't tell the difference between it and the phono stage in My Marantz PM6005 integrated amp. Ok, done  But seriously, though I made several recording of the 2 and ABd b...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
I've just begun to go down the rabbit hole of ripping tracks to WAV since I have just got an optical/coax digital output card for my PC to form a "reference" system along with the DAC in my amplifier so I can sort of hear them ok now. While I'm waiting for the MP-110 to arrive I've been recording a...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
I can't help but think though you have made multiple budget purchases and you could probably have just aimed higher to begin with for the same outlay. Absolutely true, but I don't really have many regrets. Except for the cartridges everything was pre-owned but like new and some were fantastic price...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
regarding preamps - seeing as your a wiggler. You MIGHT have studio mic preamps at hand?? if so - read on. I use a Radial Phono DI (J33) to take the turntable signal and convert it to Mic Levels + do the RIAA conversion. Then it can plug into any mic preamp. Unfortunately I do not have a pre-amp ev...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Well I'm tired of my Elys 2 cartridge already   I ordered an MP-110 from Japan as an "upgrade" despite being less than half the price. Why not just go all out and get something really good? For educational purposes mainly. I feel that I just can't go through life as an audio upgrader w...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
I think AB testing is the road to madness, if it sounds good, then be happy it sounds good. I know I put a lot of unconscious bias whenever doing these things, so I dont look for the marginal gains. Yup. I can't help it when I get something new though  I will stopped after I've established for...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Well I'm starting to get a feel for my new budget amp. It is in fact significantly better than my old NAD. In the first few days I had it I was using Grado headphones because Hifiman cables broke and I was waiting on a replacement. Then when they finally arrived I was tired of testing so I just list...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
To hear something better than what a budget amp provides. Interesting. I have been looking at it a completely different way. More on that later. Generally I find these things hard to put into words. For the mixer, it just made everything bigger and open up. I heard detail in the kicks I hadn't prev...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
To me it's about the speaker amp combo not just the amp, you really have to think of them as one, because it's all about how an amplifier drives the speaker drivers, that is why there is a lot of talk in audiophile forums about speaker amp combinations, and although there is a lot of nonsense in th...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Then just a couple days after getting the turntable I saw another deal I couldn't refuse on a Marantz PM6005 integrated amp. I was interested in that one because it got stellar reviews, it supposedly has a good phono stage and according to the Marantz marketing department: "For optimized sound quali...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Sometimes even records that look pristine now still sound bad. Not sure if they were poorly recorded (least likely), poorly mastered, poorly pressed or have a lot of invisible wear. I'm not sure what to expect with another cartridge upgrade (or whole turntable, been eyeing classifieds for a used Pl...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
^^ Noise sounds different to rumble. Noise will sound like white noise. Rumble is low frequency sound. If it is rumble, you can do a few things to see if you can find the source. Disconnect the belt and see if the platter spins freely (worn platter bearings can can cause rumble), turn the platter b...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
I think you've definitely got a few rungs you could climb before you hit the 'diminishing returns' level as the OM10 is decent but not un-better-able for more but still reasonable money. But I think the other thing is - and you've discovered this too - is that some records are just ... not very goo...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Well, I ended up going the easy route and just got a really cheap OM 10 stylus replacement to stick on my cartridge. Considering that higher end stylus shapes are supposedly less forgiving about dust/surface noise and the fact that I have many old vinyls that have never been cleaned I decided I wil...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
Thanks everyone. ... Lately I've been seriously looking at the Audio Technica VM95 series. I love how there are 6 different ones that use the same cartridge so you can swap the stylus as you please. Almost pulled the trigger on a VM95ML when Amazon was showing me a lower price for some reason for a...

Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020
I have an old Rega P1 turntable with RB 100 tone arm, Ortofon OMB cartridge and 5E stylus. Not the RB 101 or RB 110 tonearm and Rega Carbon stylus it has come with since then. I have replaced the stylus once in the past and it's overdue for a new one. This time I was thinking of upgrading the stylus...
