as long as your arms/fingers have some place to "retract" quickly, you're most likely not going to die from a really quick little *tickle* from a 120vac hit. Electricity travels at large fractions of the speed of light. If the shock is severe enough, no human reaction is going to be quick enough to...

Their existing black panel art looks fantastic to me, and I much prefer it to the boring concrete gray that is way too prevalent in Eurorack. Maybe they would sell more if they offered a gray panel version, for those for whom their existing colors would be a deal breaker. But personally, I'd much ra...

Some things to think about: 0 - Even very small currents and voltages can stop your heart if the natural resistance of your skin is somehow compromised. 1 - Your skin's resistance varies depending on how dry or wet your skin is. If you're sweating or wiggling with wet hands, your skin's resistance w...

Remixes - behind the scenes
Apologies for this being a totally newbie question, but what happens behind the scenes when a song is remixed? As a music consumer, I've often seen a situation where an album comes out, and some song on the album winds up being a club hit, and then shortly afterwards a bunch of remixes of that song ...

I feel like there is something very strange about going onto an internet forum to get other people to tell you whether learning music theory will taint your originality?? Just to be clear, the question wasn't about music theory's potential effect on my originality, but on my ability to appreciate m...

For some deviation from the norm, have you considered learning a classical system outside of the stock western-style? I know you mentioned that your palate is more western, but sometimes breaking orbit is a great way to see the universe. Just a thought- never hurts to expand as the world compresses...

Will learning music theory rob me of the ability to feel it?
In another thread , I also studied western music theory, acoustics and a bit of electronics when I was in college. One of my finals was to compose a counterpoint using the medieval rules regarding permissible intervals and harmony. Now this is where I may lose some folks. Somewhere along the line of...

There's an old story about a young man who cornered a world-famous violinist and begged to be allowed to play for him. If the master offered him encouragement, he would devote his life to music. But if his talent was not equal to his calling, he wanted to know ahead of time so he could avoid wasting...

I need some serious help right now regarding music making, I'm not doing anything, and haven't done so for the last six months. I know my new girlfriend is taking up my time, but seriously, I can't get even vaguely interested in any music at all, it all seems so bloody boring and everything I liste...

While mentioned in passing by mxmxmx above, here is some more information on the Musikalisches Würfelspiel.
The article mentions an early example of 18th century games that used randomness for composition, but such use likely existed long before the 18th century.

I look at learning keyboard shortcuts like learning to touch type. Sure, it takes some effort to learn at first compared to the natural hunt-and-peck method, but once you do you'll be typing way faster and easier, and you can actually focus your mind and eyes on something else while your muscle memo...

I just discovered Renoise, and it has just floored me with its capabilities and depth. I'm loving it. The potential for expanding it with Lua and the various community-written tools for it are also pretty amazing. I'm really looking forward to learning how to do this myself, so I can take it to the ...

Small musical gadgets
What are the smallest, most useful musical gadgets you own?
Bonus points if you use them a lot, if they do something even bigger tools can't, or if they somehow pack a ton of features in to a small package.

CV-controllable module hall of fame
We all love CV control. For many of us, it's what drew us in to modular in the first place.
Let's get a list together of the modules with the most parameters controlled by CV.
Any nominations?
