Re: Who was / is the sequencer composer? Cybertron!

He was the Guru for the Synthesizers.com Yahoo group. Extremely talented and even more arrogant. You could learn a ton from him. He finally got pissed off and left. Don't know whatever happened to him. Haven't heard a thing. Roger at Synthesizers.com would probably know. Go read through the thousand...

Re: Fender Jazzmaster - Avice for first time buyer

I went through this, only with Jaguars. It only took a few months playing various units at different shops until "The One" fell into my lap. If you get one that just hits at the moment, buy it. Don't worry about what it is. What works for someone else probably isn't going to work for you. (I can't p...

Re: Have You Had to Replace Any Panel Pots, Switches and LEDs in Your Gear?

Yes. Please share what you had to replace? With enough detail to be useful to the stated goal of the thread, if you can. Volume pot on Sy33. PITA Keycontacts on multitude of synths. Some easy, some not so much. Tanatalum caps in divide down synth. (over 100) Dozens of pots on various pieces of kit....

I run a pair of Otari MX-5050's. I can make them work. I've never been able to make music with a computer.
One thing you can't get with digital is that smooth fidelity loss when bouncing tracks. In moderation it is magic. Just listen to TD Rubycon.

Re: Cleaning smoky gear :(

I am in the process of cleaning and restoring a Collins tube transceiver. Decades of smoke and dirt. I removed the tubes, removed the meter and the washed it with warm soapy water and rinsed with warm de-ionized water. Blew it off a bit with a blow dryer and then put it in the oven at 150f for a few...

Re: What is a piece of gear that you will never part with?

I've sold my Fizmo, Minimoog, T8, a pair of 2600's and FR Revolution.
I won't sell, and have had them since the 70's, my Hammond A100 tonewheel organ, Princeton Reverb or my Gibson Epiphone Accubass4.
Many, many (many) guitars, basses, synth and amps have cycled through. These I keep.

Re: Ahhh... P Bass or J Bass.

Or try a Franken Bass. I ended up taking a Gibson Accu-bass 4 and putting a vintage P-bass pick up at the neck and routing in a Bartolini J-Bass on the bridge. No tone control. Two volumes and a phasing switch. Switching between Smith RW medium lights and GHS Brite-Flats I can get the tones "I" want...

Re: What Amp / Monitors do you use in your home for Synth?

I have some powered monitors I use when recording. (Stating which ones is like an oil thread on a car forum) For making neighbor annoying sounds I use a pair of Peavey Combo 300 amps with a pair of horns on top.
To feed averything is a Roland VS-2480CD with an slave mixer for more inputs.

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

Try the "Frying Bacon" patch and play with cutoff and tracking. By cutting (attenuating) the CV level sent to different sources from the same CV many interesting variations can be made. (think keyboard tracking amount.)

I am certain I have a half dozen or more 50 pin SCSI drives out in the shed from a tower I had connected to a DR8. I've also got a full house DR8 in the storeroom and a near new MT8 in a box next to it. And all the user and service manuals. I no longer use any of it. If someone could use it all I'd ...

You need mixers, detectors, product detectors, oscillators and modulators and all of it needs to run in RF. Nothing in modular land runs fast enough to do it in modules.

Re: Do you miss patch names on synths that can't display them?

My modular isn't capable of names. Neither were the Minimoog or 2600. My JX3P had weird names for factory but no way for user. So used to no names. Then I started using Ensoniq and the names could get out of hand.

Once you get it down, try to simulate quarter slip! Here are some extra things to add to the simulation. If oil fired: the drumming of the fire and atomizer. The syncopated sound of a cross compound air or feedwater pump. Leaky pipe joints. Blower noise. Generator whine. Check valve chatter. Add in ...

Re: How do I choo-choo? (negative microtiming, Walschaerts))

You need to find a copy of Charlie Dockstetter's valve gear programs. He made adjustable visual models of about 20 different gears in multiple forms. (Slide valve, piston valve, inside and outside admission, lap and lead calculations, etc.
