Re: Twisted Electrons MEGAfm

That is the famous "ladder effect" of the YM2612. The FM cores are 14 bits, but then downgraded to 9 bits with a somewhat faulty and asymmetrical method, before mixing via time multiplexing. Some slightly mad 80s cost-cutting there. And then, as I understand it, different versions of the Genesis/Me...

Re: Dear Audacity: please die. Horribly.

As for why I was using Audacity for multitrack audio recording and arrangement: that would be because it's a free application that is capable of and presents itself as being capable of multitrack audio recording and arrangement. Multitrack audio recording? Sure. Arrangement? I think you inferred th...

Re: Overly bright LEDs

Wow, I didn’t know this was still a trend; I thought this was more of a late-‘00s/early-‘10s kind of thing, and that most hardware designers learned their lesson since then. I have an MXR Carbon Copy delay that I bought in 2008, which I love the sound of but it’s horrible to use at night or in a dar...

Re: Dear Audacity: please die. Horribly.

Rather than whether it's okay to be mad at open-source software, I think the bigger issue is that you're trying to use a small sample editor that happens to have some basic multitrack functionality as a replacement for a DAW, out of the belief that actual DAW programs are all ridiculous bloatware be...

Why would anybody be complaining about a piece of free open source software that nobody is being forced to use?

Re: Dear Audacity: please die. Horribly.

People actually use Audacity as a multitrack recorder and arranger? I mean I guess you could, but I always got the impression that it was designed as more of a quick sample editor than a full-on recording suite. At least that's how I've always used it. Really sounds like you're trying to do surgery ...

Re: Twisted Electrons MEGAfm

Good to hear that people are getting theirs. I'm practically climbing the walls waiting to get mine, checking my e-mail every couple of hours even though it hasn't even been two weeks yet since I put in my order, and probably have a couple more weeks to go.

Re: Help with 1st case, Aruturia? MakeNoise skiff? Mantis?

Gonna have to disagree with better. The PSU3 is a switching power supply as opposed to the PSU2 which was linear iirc It's actually a hybrid supply, using a switching regulator to get to +/-15V from mains, and then uses linear regulators to go from there to +/-12V and +5V. The resulting power is ve...

The doepfer looks pricier than the tiptop mantis hp for hp.
What you’re paying for is a better power supply.
Also worth mentioning that the Mantis is shallower, which means you may have trouble mounting some chonkier modules, or ones with boards perpendicular to their panels.

Re: Help with 1st case, Aruturia? MakeNoise skiff? Mantis?

Go for the Doepfer LC6 instead of LC3 if you can spring for it. Common advice for buying your first case is "Buy more HP than you think you need."
IMO, well worth it. Bigger power supply also means you can experiment with more high-current modules if that's the route you go.

I don't have Facebook. I'm fine with waiting if it's just a one-person show, and I definitely understand being held up by COVID and recent attacks.
I was just worried for a second that I'd bought something from an inactive builder.

I said it in your other thread but I’ll say it again in case you didn’t see. This is why people say to not upgrade your DAW computer. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way. I learned it the hard way myself years ago, and even had to relearn it earlier this year. Thus are the pitfalls of interfaci...

I don’t store them. I live in a goddamn apartment with barely enough room for all my shit as is. If someone wants to pay me double for a module that comes in the original box, I’ll get a box and a high-quality JPEG of the brand name, and print the logo in the appropriate place. Because fuck completi...

LCD Soundsystem. On paper I should probably like them, but I actually hate them. It just feels so.. bloodless. I’m Losing My Edge is a banger, and I can relate to it very much. I don’t like much of Baroque-era music. Between the overly ornamentized playing, the rigid timing, and the sound of the ha...

Second is the RK7... which for being a metasonix product doesn’t really get to the insane levels that most metasonix is known for. Also because it uses vactrols to make the filter circuit its this super weird hybrid of resonant MS-20/Polivoks lpf and lpg. err… you mean RK6. ;) But +1 on this. In th...

100 Gecs. In a way I can respect what they're doing— I'd sort of call it "electro-punk for the internet age", but aesthetically just doesn't do it for me; most of the time it just sounds too goofy for me to take seriously. Taking the goofiness in stride, Stupid Horse is kind of a fun novelty song I ...

if I were you, I wouldn’t use that case at all until the problem has been diagnosed and solved. You really don’t want to sleep on power issues like this, lest you find that one day what used to be some humming is now frying your modules— or yourself.
What parts that you touch cause humming?

Re: best & "most unique" sounding standard modules?

+1 on Metasonix. The thyratron VCO (currently the RK7) has several quirks about its sound that make it difficult to fully emulate, and to my ears make it sound very rich and organic. The wien bridge VCO/VCF (currently RK4) can be tuned to put out an imperfect (significant low-harmonic content) sine ...
