Re: Buchla 285 PCBs - too late?

Tip: There are out-of-spec 1494 chips floating around; if you cannot get a deep null that might be the problem. Dave Brown has a page on this module as the internal oscillator can require tweaks to get down near zero Hertz.

Re: Buchla 285 PCBs - too late?

The calibration process is aided by making some of the top PCB top-adjust trimpots, multiturn instead of single-turn.

Re: 281r V1.1 too deep for these boats?

58mm deep behind the front panel. Standoffs: 15mm, 20mm, 15mm. Thank you. I think I'll take a chance and see if I can remove the sockets and solder the two ICs in the way of the IDC connectors instead onto the PCB and change to all 15mm standoffs.

Re: 281r V1.1 too deep for these boats?

I'm fairly good at laying capacitors parallel to PCBs to decrease height. I could retrieve 5 millimeters if I soldered two of the CMOS ICs to the PCB instead of using sockets, but what a pain it is to remove one if it's ever fried or bad out of the bag. This is how the build on Dave Brown's page is ...

281r V1.1 too deep for these boats?

Is the three-PCB Roman 1.1 version based upon the vintage 281 too deep for the following boats? -201e-18 Powered Cabinet -SAmodular 5-row Buchla format 30U ? Thanks for any insight. An internet search didn't help. The module is about 58mm deep behind the front panel. Screenshot_2020-07-05_16-17-54.p...

Re: FM feedback (what is it and how do i do it)

Early FM algos couldn't be determined by users but the instruments provided selectable preset configurations (algorithms). Feedback was implemented on less-expensive instruments which had four cells versus the then typical six in order to allow a simple way to generate complex harmonics. Instruments...

Re: New module: Dual Sequential Switch for Buchla format

One of the digital sections on my 244 went out a couple of months ago as well, had to replace the programmed IC. Very sensitive.

This Grayscale module will eat the 244's lunch!

Ideally, linear FM will give you a constant percentage of change per volt (i.e. constant modulation index), at whatever base pitch the VCO is running at. A logarithmic transform can't do that because it doesn't know the base pitch.
It could if it wanted to. Truth is it just doesn't care.

My experience is that the alt waves are at their greatest usefulness at maximum level but everyone uses things differently. Thanks for the info. Apologies for the distraction. Support and best wishes for your projects.

Re: New approaches in Buchla format DIY

That's likely the alt waveform zero setting trimpot. On my 258B clone builds and on the J3RK/Verbos clones you can wire it to select between the alt waveforms and set that trim adjustment to zero for both waveforms. I believe one is always a bit stronger than the other. You just bring it down until ...

Re: New approaches in Buchla format DIY

I'm looking at the 258D and see it =appears= instead of hard-wiring for saw or square one could wire those connections out to a 3PDT switch for square/saw selection per oscillator...the question is then, depending upon what sort of PCB-mount pots you use, is there 15mm between the front panel and PC...

Re: 285r v.1 vs v.2?

EMS's page says they're sold out of the V2 PCB set but they have the front panel, if you can source a set of PCBs elsewhere. Sorry for the bad news if you don't :( BTW, a dual trace oscilloscope is required to calibrate this build. It's not very difficult. But do pay attention to the V2 mods on Dave...
