Re: Update from Mutable Instruments on a DivKid youtube comment? 3 more releases?

Part 4: dedicated FM A few years ago someone asked what sorts of synthesis methods interested Émilie the most, and as I recall, the answer was modal synthesis and FM. A lot of Mutable modules have a linear FM (or PM) mode and/or an expo FM input, but we have not seen a dedicated FM module. What wou...

Episode 7 - UNDER A HOLLOW MOON Tonight, on the estival solstice, we pay homage to our constant cosmic companion. But, what is the moon? How did it get there? And does anyone call it home? From myths, to tall tales, to scientific hypotheses, the roles that the moon plays in each of our lives are as ...

Re: studio electronics tonestar

Quick question for folks with Tonestars. If you set the VCO to bypass the filter, then put the filter into self oscillation and FM it with the VCO, does it make for decent FM sounds?

Episode 6 - WHERE THERE'S QUIET Where is there quiet? Perhaps it's to be found in portions of the Northwestern United States, blanketed by a hydrogenic mist. Or maybe in a classroom where everyone does their part. Maybe you can only find it when surrounded by strange grey wedges. Wherever it is, it...

Re: If you had to pick one OSC for a small system. Which one would that be?

Pittsburgh Modular's Lifeforms Primary Oscillator has a ton of range and sounds great. The wavefolder on it is nice and rubbery sounding, and the downsampler output can do some cool tonal stuff when you sequence it.

Re: Recommendations/wisdom about CV (DC-coupled) VCAs?

The Happy Nerding 3xVCA is indeed extremely handy, affordable, and low hp. Hard to beat the VCA to hp ratio on it too. Ring modulators are also really great for processing your CV since you can automate inversion of your signals in addition to amplitude. Mutable Blinds is a great quad unit, and I pe...

Re: Filter for samples, field recordings etc.

Three sisters looks really interesting for mixing multiple sources with differing frequency content. Thanks for the suggestion - it would definitely do something different than my current filters and it seems like it would work really well with field recordings. It's to get a hold of though. Perhap...

Re: Filter for samples, field recordings etc.

I really like using Three Sisters on field recordings and anything with frequencies occurring all over the spectrum. It gets especially interesting when you use it to mix different signals together, cross fading between them based on frequency or having signals bloom out into others. You can also tu...

Re: Eurorack Saturation

I really like the saturation I get out of the Instruo Tanh3. Three channels, 4hp, and runs about $100. It's also great for placing in feedback loops as it acts sort of like a limiter.

Re: Making a patch malleable

You might want to try using a macro controller like MI Frames, Cold Mac, or Livestock Maze to run some major signals through. Something I like to do with Frames is set the big knob and each channel control to center, run some major CV paths through the channels, and then build the rest of the patch ...

Re: Need quantizer advice.

What makes the Intellijel quantizers worth it for me is their keyboard styled layout. I don't really know scales by their names, but I know what patterns on a keyboard sound like, so they're extremely intuitive if that's how you work. (And obviously other quantizers use that layout too, I just haven...

Re: Modules that FEEL good

I find the zoom interface on Mungo modules to be really satisfying. I know a lot of people seem to struggle with it, but something about flipping the switch to changes the knob resolution feels very right to me. I really love using the dual concentric pots on Happy Nerding stuff. They feel rock soli...

Re: re: Xaoc Belgrad

This is not normal behavior, right? I've never noticed these strange oscillations. It's been a while since I had mine, but IIRC, when you turn the span knob up that far, the lower filter will go far below audio rate oscillation across the lower half of the frequency knob, so you're essentially mixi...

Re: Attenuators with limited gain?

So what you should use is a mixer like the Doepfer A-138: attenuators on the 4 inputs, and an attenuator on the output. But then people complain it is too big ... That would certainly work but what I don't like about the module is the lack of patch flexibility. I hardly ever need 4 inputs of modula...

Re: Attenuators with limited gain?

It might help you to throw one of these in the middle of your signal path: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/ladik-p-520-4ch-out-line You can set the jumpers to get different levels of fixed attenuation. -20db (roughly 1/10) or -10db (roughly 1/3). 4 DC-coupled channels :sb: Ahhhh, good idea! This migh...

Attenuators with limited gain?

I'm sick of running attenuators into attenuators into attenuators. Seriously, I often have to use two or three stages of attenuation to get subtle enough modulation going on with various parts of a patch. And even after that, the controls are still so touchy that I can't really manipulate things wit...

there is a massive invasion of low quality gear, untalented musicians, disingenuous marketing from large corporations. this is about artists losing their culture to corporations and dilettantes. I don't see this as positive. I don't think this is the case at all. Artists have always made their own ...

Yeah, I heard the guy who played The Arm just knew how to speak backwards as a party trick and David Lynch liked it so much they decided to use it in the show. It had such an awesome disorienting effect, really felt like a dream in ways I haven't seen any other film or TV accomplish.

Ha! I haven't tried anything like this myself but it reminds me of the way Radiohead recorded the song Like Spinning Plates. I guess they were playing back a song they were working on in reverse, and liked the melody a lot better that way. So Thom Yorke learned to sing it backwards and they reversed...

Re: Modules for creating envelope follower (for guitar pedal type FX)?

Can Maths be configured to follow with the addition of attack and release? Yes, as with most dual slew limiters, it will follow your incoming signal and delay the rising or falling action according to how you set the rise (attack) and fall (release) controls. Which module could take my audio signal...
