Re: Techniques - Warm distortion/clipping

1. filtering prior to distortion 2. filtering post distortion 3. parallel processing, or frequency splitting, distorting just one freq range then, imo most important: 4. adding a cabinet/speaker to shave off the chainsaw top, plugin or do the reamp/amp/room/mic 5. tape saturation, real or plugin, to...

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

one should wipe the xpander presets immediately upon arrival.

they are rather horrific, from the era when it tried to be a "dx7" and an "ob8" and the same time.

it will give you entirely skewed picture of what its really capable of.

Re: Sampler for ambient / noise couch jams

i love eurorack, but i think it defeats the original premise. not a quick couch affair anymore. it'll get bigger, messier with patch cables all over the place etc.

i'd stay with contained neat one box solution. either iPad. or if you are young and have good eyes, octatrack 1 used..

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

hydrasynth and xpander? can't imagine two synths with more different texture and tone. one sounds unapologetically digital, mid scooped with fizzy and sometimes harsh top end. another a buzzy but warm curtis affair from mid eighties, with wonderful warm low mids, saturation the works.. emulating arh...

Re: What is a piece of gear that you will never part with?

PPG Wave 2, a wonderous synth i dreamed of ever since hearing it first on few seminal albums in 1981. never though i'd see one or manage to buy one. yet of all places it surfaced local to me in 2012. only 30 years later. when i was testing it, "something got stuck in my eye" - for me an emotional mo...

Re: Lineal VS Switching Power Supply Sound Quality

On the one hand it's famous how astoundingly overpriced audio gear can get if someone holds a bottleneck position, so it makes sense to me that the "high end" components actually don't really cost that much a difference and those premiums are in large part fancy materials, labor, marketing and heav...

Re: Lineal VS Switching Power Supply Sound Quality

i would like to resurrect this thread, with a related question: i've noticed a surge of "high endish" low noise linear power supplies show up in world of high end converters and monitor controllers, and other audiophile and mastering equipment.. for example Mytek Brooklyn DAC, used by many for maste...

Re: Best modern wavetable synth.

subjectively (is there any other way really..): Argon 8 - nice smooth sound, very musical. think its tone would complement the more metallic and agrro waldorfs. some questionable design decisions - way too low output Virus TI - darker, rounder wavetable sound. but if looking for wavetable pads that ...

Re: turning into a DIY JP8 - your suggestions

It would be helpful to find someone who would develop a new CPU for the extended desktop JP8 together with me. We would also have to decide if this version should work with the IR3109 in the filters, or if new filters should be built with other OTA, e.g. 13700 or 3080. Then we won't talk about a Ju...

Re: Decent Recording Setup for Hand Drums?

i'd like to add that, what sort of acoustics treatment you have will radically influence what microphone will work best. for example, in a naked room full of high/mid flutter from parallel walls, and not enough absorption and no difussion, a cardioid SDC or pair of them in x-y might pickup too much....

Re: ROMplers with 90s samples

well, from practical viewpoint, i think you want something that can easily and natively read all those famous 90s cdrom titles... and that means Akai. its of course possible to transfer to other systems but unless its an old sampler that can read akai (like S760 or EOS line for example) it can get c...

Re: Rack mounted FX

Midiverb II is a great choice, tho i prefer the sound of original Quadraverb and its set of algos for that 90s ambient reverb. with that said, if you want quick to setup, and something where you can easily tweak things into sweet spot, i think the world of pedals is much more interesting. i mean, i ...

Summit can do much much more. 002 is comparably limited in many ways.. but a few mod sources, no filter fm, no wave scanning etc. that said, 002 sounds absolutely heavenly. imo its a different league from Summit, that there is no comparison. the oscillators, the filters,,, absolutely grandiose. one ...
