Re: Korg Wavestate

Similar review to Nelson. Most of my complex synths are Elektron, and I really miss their UI hierarchy and key combos like copy and paste. Even just changing the length of a wave sequence is on page 3 of the sequence screens for that lane.. Also navigating the sample list is so long and arbitrary. C...

wtf wow. our library just has books.
So, I looked it up for you because people's misunderstanding of their library offerings is extremely common.

Chicago public libraries also have (in non-covid times) piano rehearsal spaces

Re: Syncussion alternatives?

I used to have a techstar 305 and the clap module like 10 years ago, now I have 3hands's old syncussion. Naturally my knowledge of the tama has faded after that long. From what I remember the tama techstar is much tamer. The range of sounds is much more like.. thud, pew, peuw, piw. I think some chan...

I'll fix the CV wet/dry problem before the end of 2020 and release an update. I think there's a few other bugs (parasites firmware doesn't save the mode over reboot)

Re: Recommend your weirdest craziest FX machine ever

If you want to get wild and crazy for cheap and like using a DAW, try running VSTs in a feedback loop. In ableton it's super easy to send track 1 to 2, 2 to 2, and 2 to master. Then add FX to 1 and 2 and go nuts Strongly suggest you send to another track and record it as you go because sounds won't ...

Re: Emu ESI-4000 Frontpanel Repair

Fixed it!! Replacing the 3 ICs on the frontpanel board did the trick, naturally it was the third and last chip I despise red and replaced that was bad but it's all good now. .. except I burnt out the backlight and now need to replace the LCD. Apparently it's just a hitachi HD44780 four line display ...

Naturally, a few hours after I buy replacements for the three chips I start to map out the pin matrix wiring and find that there is a short between two of the matrix lines!

Now.. to find the short..

edit, nope.. just thought one matrix column was two..

Re: Emu ESI-4000 Frontpanel Repair

Don't know if you set the scope up to trigger on the clocks or output enables. That is what I would do. Also a lot of analog scopes have a lamp or LED to indicate the scope was triggered that you can use to tell if the scope was triggered by a non-periodic signal or single pulse where you might not...

Emu ESI-4000 Frontpanel Repair

This is just a thread documenting my attempt to fix an ESI-4000 sampler I picked up recently. If anyone has advice feel free to chime in. THE ISSUE Pressing a button on the frontpanel triggers one or more additional button presses. It's not random, certain buttons seem to act identical, other button...

I would love a Usta cheat sheet in here. I saw there’s a repo, do you accept pull requests? Yes please!! Even if you just write up the text and open a PR, I can assist with formatting and inclusion in the app. I don't have that module so it's a lot harder for me to write useful cheat sheets without...

If you're serious about this I strongly suggest an iPad. You can probably write your midi app in Mozaic, which is a scripting language for midi events

Re: Dixie II -- overkill for non-VCO purposes?

I used one for a little while as an LFO and I enjoyed it. Nice to have an LFO without menus or alt modes and a big knob for setting the frequency. It made a very playable LFO, albeit a bit large compared to alternatives

Related question for iphone users: Would you pay ~$10 US for an app that recorded video, but ALSO showed a VU meter and reported what device the audio is coming from? Maybe in the longer term it also offers the ability to run the audio through a chain of AUv3 plugins for noise reduction, EQ, compres...

Legally, Wes was in the clear;
That is but the opinion of one non-lawyer.

I don't want to debate it as there is no point whatsoever for synth nerds to chime in but only a court would actually determine that.

Just want to call that out since your post says it as fact.

Re: interesting modern digital synths?

Korg Wavestate took about four hours of use, reading the manual, and watching one howto video to understand enough to write my own patches.

It's equally fun to just layer many single sample layers and build longer wave sequences. The UI is not my favourite but it is now my favourite poly anyways.

Anyhow, it does gets praised all around. My personal view: - because all compression variables are controlled with one knob, being able to control the input amplitude is very important. The "input gain" control is insufficient as it only boosts and only by 4 different discrete values. So you need t...

With the fixed signal path, limited UI feedback, and reduced controls, I don't think it would work super well In that use case.

It's pretty good for mangling drums. I haven't found a mix bus setting I've liked compared to just keeping it clean yet
