Re: 6Hz at 130dB. We all threw up and cracked a warehouse wall

... Will still call them sub woofers... True, but the word "subwoofer" was coined specifically to mean a loudspeaker that operates in the frequency range lower than typical woofers. The word "subsonic" existed (and had an entirely different meaning) before it began to be mis-used in place of the ex...

Re: Noob getting into 5U

...how do you all typically interface your MU system with your sound system? Do you go straight out of a mixer or VCA and into an external mixer or audio interface? (Are the signals so hot that they need a ton of attenuation?) I have found a few modules on MG that have headphone outputs, and a few ...

Re: The Sound of Very Low Frequency Notes

...Would my mechanical plate idea work? Yes and no. If you constructed the mechanism in free air it would produce acoustic waves on either side that are out of phase with each other, resulting in lots of cancellation, which would reduce their amplitude. To be effective the plate must be mounted in ...

Re: The Sound of Very Low Frequency Notes

just out of curiosity, why is this? is it something to do with the physics of speakers? A metronome at 240 bpm IS playing at 4 hertz. A recording of it is doing the same - you hear the individual ticks as events. Those events are like a PWM square wave with a narrow pulse. So you can hear it! No, t...

Re: The Sound of Very Low Frequency Notes

And remember that almost no loudspeakers on Earth can reproduce a legitimate 4Hz wave at a high enough amplitude that humans could perceive it through their bodies (a phenomenon known as haptics ). just out of curiosity, why is this? is it something to do with the physics of speakers? Mostly it has...

Re: The Sound of Very Low Frequency Notes

It's the sound of someone tapping the table at 4hz which is equivalent to a click at 240 bpm. I think when the triangle [saw — ed.] is transitioning at its peak, it's spitting out more harmonics so you get a higher tish-click at 240 bpm. Maybe? :hmm: This right here. If it were a pure sine wave you...

Re: 6Hz at 130dB. We all threw up and cracked a warehouse wall

I agree, very interesting stuff. BUT... can we please use the correct term — infrasonic — when discussing pressure waves that occur at frequencies lower than can be heard by humans? The word subsonic means "slower than the speed of sound (Mach 1)". Infrasonic (lower than audible) > Ultrasonic (highe...

hsosdrum Nice setup. What are the modules with green leds? One of the new synthesizers.com module? Thanks! They're Dotcom Q179 Envelope++'s. Re: What am I looking for in a tape cassette recorder?

If you want to record with microphones make sure the deck you get has inputs that are labeled "Mic" or "Microphone", indicating that the electronics include mic preamps. If they're labeled simply "Input", they're not mic inputs. Many hi-fi cassette decks omitted mic preamps, since few hi-fi enthusia...

I just pulled 3 of my rig's 4 patches and am embarking on a second voyage of module discovery, the first voyage having been when I bought my original 44U system 2-1/2 years ago. (I had so many patch cords involved that I don't even have room for all of them in my holders, which is why you see a bunc...

Steve Tibbetts , Yr : The finest album of guitar-based music I've ever heard, this album hangs-together like an exquisite single composition, with Tibbetts' virtuoso playing on electric and acoustic guitars always at its center. Unclassifiable in genre, this album weaves a different spell every tim...

If I want to "save" a patch I document every connection and module control setting in an MS Word document. Re: When did you realize you were a modular aficionado?

I got my hands on the Moog modular at MSU in Spring of 1969 and Fall of 1970. I was hooked within minutes, it all just made sense. Same experience here. I first sat down at a Moog Model 10 (or Model 12, I forget which) at a music store in 1971 and it just made total sense to me. It also made simply...

Re: Patch cables. To DIY or just buy?

I agree 100% with cornutt , and will add that you should also factor in how good you are at soldering. Making 50 or 100 patch cables from scratch will require lots of soldering. For me, life's too short to spend that much time making cables — I'll gladly trade money for time any day of the week. Tim...
