the spice's "XMOD" trick seems to just be a dedicated attenuator for feeding the BP output back into the input. it's a fun trick, but you can do similar with any filter with a separate BP out.

trogotronic makes a wonderful dual tube VCA that seems to not be too crazy powerwise! it sounds great also

the m277 does sound great, but it draws 720mA on the +12V rail unless you use its external power supply.
