Re: Gate to CV encoder

Mixer is a good idea, though I'd want a DC coupled mixer. The advantage it has is I can weigh each "bit" however I want that way, though it would take a little tuning. Thanks for the idea. I'll also take a look for the R-2R module mentioned. Thanks everyone!

Gate to CV encoder

Looking for something in Eurorack that will convert some number of gates to a digital-to-analog style CV result. Preferably at least 4 gates, but I could see as many as 8 being useful. The idea being, if you plug in two gates, you get 4 states of CV output based on the gate combos at the input. 3 in...

Please, please, please do not switch to optical encoders if it means making Zadar anything like the size/price of an E352
Hopefully it wouldn’t be quite as bad as that, but if you’ve ever had equipment rendered useless by a flaky encoder you might change your tune.

Re: Xaoc Zadar, Quadruple Envelope Generator + Nin expander

Most of the problems with faulty encoders in Zadar arise from mechanical problems, we are solving this with some additional washers. Also we've changed supplier for the forthcoming batches. I know it looks like plague, but the problem is with just small percent of all Zadars we've sold. Optical enc...

Re: Eurorack shops

Detroit is also my favorite shop, I always go there first. One thing I did learn (not from Detroit, but I presume it could apply to any seller) is to avoid pre-orders, I've seen them take forever and in Covid times, seems like it could be even worse than forever...

Re: Autechre - recreate on Eurorack?

Autechres new record 'SIGN' is out today. Loving it so far - my favourite thing I've heard from them in some time ! I know they are more sample/Max MSP based, but being newish to modular and interested in exploring such sounds, I'm curious how one might go about creating such things on Eurorack. Se...

Re: A Madlibs-like Modular Synthesizer?

Interesting idea. I've coded up purely text versions of random sentence generators many times on the computer, so I've learned a few things in doing that... I always divided up the problem into to parts. Sentence structures, and the word lists. The sentence structures would define how to assemble th...

This seems like an odd request. It's very rare to use MIDI note zero. Usually keyboards are centred around 48 or 60 or so. Can you explain why you want to use note zero?
I've used it often, usually when creating an arpeggio modulation track that's designed to be added to another track.

Re: Alternatives to Rings in 2020

I'm sure we all have had the dream of somehow discovering some brand new amazing sound that no one has ever heard before. But it seems to me you're most likely to come across that by happy accident at this point, rather than by design (unless you're John Chowning, and maybe not even then). No doubt ...

That said, in a pinch if you're really tight for space, the Play module is useful as is the Radio Music. I’m curious to hear your take on the merits between the 2hp Play and the Radio Music. I current have a Play, and I find that it does its job well, but I’ve been considering getting a Radio Music...

Re: Looking for a specific mixer

Check out Happy Nerding's 6HP mixers. The one in particular I've been looking at for something similar is the PanMix Jr, but they have a 3-ch stereo mixer as well and a larger version of the Jr-- the PanMix. There stuff is usually pretty thought out, adding features you might not have thought of.

Re: Is there a sampler(File Player) that you would consider a 'voice' ?

I second 4MS STS. I just got one recently, and wow did I sleep on this module (4ms mods always catch my eye, not sure why this didn't earlier). I think with it's on-board looper, length knob that can also serve as an eg, and 1v/oct, it definitely can fit most definitions of a "full voice." +1 to fi...

So I am wondering if there are any good alternatives around yet, I am surprised th...

I don't know what to ditch at the moment, but there's a module that's been announced that I'm anxiously awaiting availability for just the sort of generative applications you describe, the Doepfer A-149-4. It's small HP, and I presume will be pretty affordable, but packs a lot of goodness in one sma...

Re: Results are in! Eurorack Essential Features Survey 2020

Nice try, but it lacked the one of the most important issues I care about-- that the specifications that you can view BEFORE you buy, include whether or not any encoders used are OPTICAL or MECHANICAL. I'm only aware of ONE manufacturer that does that, Synthesis Technology. They all should. I'm not ...

I'm also noting that in both of these videos you can see there's more than one cable attached to the reader. Older non-USB readers are already that way in many cases, which might be what they're using, or they could have added their own extra cable to an USB reader with the picked-off signal that yo...

Re: Good source for 3.5mm to BNC, banana to BNC?

Single conductor banana to BNC also exist, as I've got a couple, but I've never seen 3.5mm direct to BNC. BNC to/from RCA is pretty common, as is to/from screw coax cable connectors (Z?). The first place I'd look is eBay as they'd probably be cheaper.

Re: Some amazing Instruments

Here's another example of the barcode approach that shows better the specific characteristics of what they're getting out of the scanner-- it's clear the laser scan + optical sensor is outputting a continuous signal of what the scanner is seeing, before it's being converted to a sequence of numbers ...

Re: Some amazing Instruments

Another possible approach that wouldn't use barcode readers could be taking a digital camera chip and capturing a frame, then scanning it to convert the image to audio-- but that would entail some latency which the barcode reader optical sensor approach would not. Though it might be better for conve...

Re: Some amazing Instruments

The problem with converting numbers to voltage levels is you only get the numbers I would think when it sees a discrete barcode with the start/stop bars, and you get the whole barcode number, which isn't what you would want for the kind of more generalized and realtime "convert visual noise to audio...

Good to know about the Tapiographic Delay-- as I've already got an RM, and theoretically I should be able to get similar patterened delay sequences with it with a little more effort, plus I do often find it useful, the TD will probably fall so far down the wish list that I'll probably end up passing...

Also, from this video it appears that what is transmitted over USB is the already converted barcode result as a serial signal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK0oIyC76M4 So it looks like opening up the device and picking off a signal directly from the optical sensor will be necessary... Re: Some amazing Instruments

Just discovered some of this barcode-scanner based music. Looking into what it takes. Best I can tell, the optical sensor that's picking up the "image" illuminated by the laser is just being used as an audio signal. The question is, how do you get that signal out of a barcode reader? Looking at what...
