Re:

How does it compare to erbeverb? It doesn't? ;) I mean, the Springray uses a real, electro-mechanical spring reverb, vibrating by way of a transducer based on the input sound. The Erbe-Verb is a DSP algorithm designed for real (and imagined) reverb simulation. A spring reverb doesn't really sound l...

Re: Today my small discovery was...

Feedbacking through a phaser, delay, fixed filterbank, compressor and controlling it with Planar 2 is hours of fun.

Re: Alternatives to Rings in 2020

Mutable style ambient music isnt my favorite thing but FMing my rings with sine waves through a VCA took it some more interesting percussive places for me.

Re: Horror Themes

Thanks. Yeah, I might avoid making a release overtly inspired by these things with a horror movie style cover as this trope is played out. Still a fun jumping off point I guess. Soundtrack and library music has been something I have been consuming a lot of these days. I think Cyclobe have an interes...

Re: Are Multis really necessary?

Stackables do fine for multing most things other than 1v/o signals. You can usually get away with sending 1v/o signals another place with a stackable before noticing significant tuning errors although I'm sure this depends on the range as well as modules and someone will probably disagree with me.

Switches or sequential switches and crossfaders.
Why? (Asking for a friend)
It makes sense to be able to send the same CV different places, crossfade between different CVs (or sound sources) or switch between different gates (or sound sources) to keep a generative patch interesting.

Re: Doepfer Vs all the rest

Their polyphony subsystem and phaser have been some go to modules lately. The phaser is a pretty basic one trick wonder with one CV input but sounds good to my ears and does what it says. I guess I appreciate the rational layout and simple technical approach. it can be annoying that modules like Vei...

Re: Best sequential switch?

I have the Alyseum Matrix and doepfer seq switch. While the Alyseum is interesting and more capable of rearranging complex patches I probably use the doepfer more often since its simple and easy. I guess it depends on your workflow and patience for patching and managing a complex patch where all of ...

Horror Themes

Got pretty obsessed with Fabio Frizzi, Goblin, John Carpenter and all that jazz recently and decided to make a theme with some mellotron choir samples loaded into Bitbox and other euro modules. https://youtu.be/-K6StYwrvR8 Would love to hear your thoughts or personal takes on this genre. Cheers, RR

Recently got into Camberwell Now's record "The Ghost Trade" which I guess is a band that Charles Hayward started with several members of This Heat after they broke up. This Heat's BBC sessions are also worth listening to.

Re: Squarp Instruments Hermod Modular Brain

This might be kinda bonkers, but is there any overlap with Hermod and Voltage Block? Been a smidge frustrated with VB but i wonder if a hermod would be overkill, or if it's as adept at modulation over like note sequencing It has a modulation matrix with multiple LFOs that can be synced to clocks. M...

Re: Looking for module / patch ideas to create 70's choir synth

Not to be a naysayer, but it seems to me that those types of sounds are more suited to Mellotron samples, which are easy to come by, or potentially the Roland VP-330 or it’s Behringer clone. It will be much simpler (and cheaper) to achieve polyphonic choir sounds. Not to discourage you or anything!...

Re: Looking for module / patch ideas to create 70's choir synth

I don't seek to invalidate the advice offered, which sounds like a decent approach to try to achieve this sound, and maybe I am utterly wrong, but I'd always thought that these sounds were achieved by employing an actual choir. I think sir stony is probably right that some of it might be mellotron ...

Re: Looking for module / patch ideas to create 70's choir synth

I love this idea! Those giallo soundtracks have such a great sound. I think the Oakley HVM would be worth exploring. It's a fixed filter bank based on the Roland VP-330 choir sounds. The VP-330 was definitely used by Goblin. http://www.oakleysound.com/hvm-e.htm Quite a bit of their stuff was done w...

Yasuaki Shimizu, Mariah and similar Japanese music

I'm just getting into the stuff. I imagine there is a trove of oddball synth-heavy albums in this vein from the 70s and 80s. I dig YMO and related solo projects of course. Anyone have any other favorites?

Re: Fixed Filter Banks - Long-term use, same-y results?

Most things sound better through my RS Serge Res EQ. I think it makes sense to have a few mostly static modules (compressors / eqs and the like if you dont use outboard gear) in a systerm where everything is voltage controlled. Very cool to us the comb outs in stereo and hear how the image changes w...

Looking for module / patch ideas to create 70's choir synth

I have listening to a decent amount of 70s Italian horror soundtracks lately. I keep hearing this choral synth in Goblin and Fabio Frizzi scores that I would really love to recreate in euro format. Any ideas what a patch for this might look like or if there are any modules that might get me close? A...
