Re: Help Choosing Modules for Sampler

Midi clock is often cumbersome to set up. Triggers will work all day long every time. Plus, you have a whole lot more flexibility with triggers, as you would sequence them as triplets or quarter notes or whatever where the midi clock is much more set. There are 32 midi channels available on the mpc ...

Re: DAWless Eurorack Recording -- how do you do it, recorder recommendations?

I use the motu 828mk3 and digital spdif into a two track solid state recorder. This way it is permanently ready to record with zero hassle and I have the option of recording to the computer as well if needed.

Re: Ideas/Advice

I would miss not having more than one melodic sequencer in a rack like this. It looks like a fun groove box as is, but having a few different options in terms of how melody and rhythm is generated would make everything more fun in my opinion.

Re: OK, rack help.

The key to rhythmic patterns are triggers in my opinion. You have several envelope generators that can take triggers. I would look at Erica Pico trigg, Frequency Central Cryptograf, Dnipro(?) Dot, Grayscale Algorythm or Mutable Grids. You have at least four capable sound generators and quite a bit o...

Re: Help Choosing Modules for Sampler

For sync: midi to trigger module For melodies: midi to cv module You can probably find a unit that can do both of these together. I would avoid using midi clock, just run a straight 16th note pattern onto a trigger output on the module you pick. For the Rhodes idea, you will need a sampler module as...

Omg omg what a great unit. I wish I got one earlier. I could have avoided getting expensive oscillators and fancy filters. This thing on a simple analog oscillator is just bananas. So raw and rich.

Re: Metropolis or RYK-185, and why?

Thanks oilpanic for the reply, and especially the personal preference of the RYK. I would actually be buying an assembled version of the RYK, as my solder skills are lacking. Do you find it is difficult to remember the modes / meanings of the pictograms on the RYK? No, the settings are really simpl...

Re: Metropolis or RYK-185, and why?

The main feature I love with the RYK is the several options per step, I believe there are 8 on the RYK but only 4 on the Metropolis. That alone puts me firmly in the RYK camp. I think both units would be straight forward to figure out and have fun with. It’s more a matter of if you have the time and...

Re: Options for small kickdrum module with definition

I’m going to suggest that 95% of all techno and house available today is produced in DAW environment where you can work that bass drum in all sorts of ways. You will have a hard time getting the same results in the euro environment as far as punch and presence. It’s a totally different way of workin...

Re: VCA before mixer, mixer before VCA?

I like the vca in front of the mixer. Some mixers respond differently depending on the overall volume of the incoming signal, so so dynamic flexibility here often makes the sound more alive in my opinion.

Re: Do I really need a quad VCA to start?

Just get a whole bunch of happy nerding and place them next to each other. That makes the mixing, attenuverting and vca all with great aluminum concentric knobs. Heck put a filter in there also and the look is complete.

Re: MasterEffect for Live Techno :)?

If you can keep your levels under strict control it would not be necessary but the modular environment has a tendency to jump around in volume so I would say that it is probably helpful. There is no shortcut to good sound, so I would not have too high hopes that it would improve on the overall audio.

In such a tight space I would get a Erica Pico seq, the first model. I have two and they are lots of fun. Do not expect too much control in such a cramped interface, but with the Pico I always get useful results.

Re: How many times can you passively mult your gates before they stop registering?

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even have a modular system yet. I just know more than roughly what I want to do with one based on my experiments in software. Moving to hardware is really just about having more power/interconnectivity between a lot of these disparate patch ideas I've already don...

Re: End-of-chain Compressor/Limiter Options

Get a used motu 828 mk3 and set up all inputs using the built in compressor. That gives you a 8 channel summing mixer with eq and reverb as well, and individual dynamics on all channels. For like $350. Oh, it can also be a sound card and it is dc coupled so all sorts of modular trickery can be made....

Frequency Central Bartos Flur II. It’s like 8 cascaded comparators with individual gate or trigger out per window. And you can set a CV level per window and use it as a strange sequencer. Fun and different.
