MPE and Linnstrument for Film Sound Design

I've started going MPE with my bass guitar, and did a "hmmm". Now I started building some sounds with my ROLI and did another "hmmm". Some of my friends started using a Linnstrument, and I did another "hmmm". I am use to doing film post on protools doing quad stems for sound design, but editing MPE ...

I thought it was some kind of law that Jaco Pastorius has to be top of the bassist list ;)
If it's not, it should be. I do thing Jaco doesnt fit in any standard category.

Re: Greatest electronic song ever.

I was just watching some some what recent shots of pink floyd band members playing with the original sequencers and synths used for Dark Side of the Moon. There was a lot of tape stuff, but i didnt realize how much was done with synths. Also almost all the instruments(even singers), went through ana...

Re: Teaching modular synthesis to sound design students

I use vcvrack, it's especially nice for post production creating samples for later use in something like pro tools. It also now has a record audio module so you can save sound clips for later use in sound design mixing daws. There's a lot u can do with the basic vcvrack lfo/vca/etc ... so u can fair...

Re: old movie soundtracks and synthesizers

One of my favorite that still holds up is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Joe Hisaishi. Oh man, Hisaishi is so talented! His Ghibli soundtracks are breathtaking and perfectly atmospheric, but his work on some of Beat Takeshi’s films is just as brilliant and seems to be largely overlooked by W...

Re: 106A ... your tricks for this module?

Another useful solution was discussed here: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=25853 Thats real interesting, i guess that is doing a simple mix of three inputs and fed into the sync input. I btw did find a good defintion of soft sync by chris meyers ... https://learningmodular.c...

Not to discourage new conversation, but here is a thread on soft sync that might help your understanding: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=6918 It's a really cool feature. I haven't seen that, i read it and watched the video's ... i still cant figure out exactly what soft sync...

106A ... your tricks for this module?

I only have a couple of 106A, mostly 106. I've been doing some things where I needed to use some 106a functionality, and realized I had no real idea how it really works! I still dont fully get the Soft sync setting, the linear frequency section ac/dc ... what is even that for? The description of the...

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

Try the "Frying Bacon" patch and play with cutoff and tracking. By cutting (attenuating) the CV level sent to different sources from the same CV many interesting variations can be made. (think keyboard tracking amount.) https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=101951 Excellent link, I thin...

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

Zon Vern Pyles did some phenominal thunder on Looking Forward album. Dot com and Nord. Thats an excellent example, great album too. I can get real close to that modulating a sawtool lfo which is run through an envolope, that envolope is vca a straight noise signal, which then goes into state filter...

Re: Doing It - Next Level Bass Controlled Synth Rig

I like my fretless jazz bass -> Gk3b -> bss sy-1000 . Works well, i especially like how i can set up different chains per string and easily integrate into my rack. Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

I just found this discussion viewtopic.php?t=184196 ... sending the noise through a double vca seems key. The first vca is controlled by a saw tooth, with the second being a envelope. (Trying to get the "clap" of the thunder clap)

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

Do you have envelope generators with per stage trigger and/or gate outputs? I normally use my q960 through a slew to do that kind of thing. The q119 can do that also (using continous with up/on ... then doing blocks of clocks through my gate math). Maybe doing two envelopes generated by the 960 whi...

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

I once achieved a convincing lighting. Modulating the filter resonance was key. Don't remember the patch, though. Must have had noise as input. I think I triggered the whole thing with an envelope. Some free running LFO's to get variation in attack and tail, and movement during strike. Probably som...

Re: Create a lightning strike in 5u?

You mean a Thunderclap? Mult a noise source (White) to various different VCF>VCA voices with independent EG's for each. Tweak to taste. A good module to accomplish this along with a Attenuverter is a SSF Quantum Rainbow... The 5U version is a rare one from Free State FX called Double Rainbow. I wil...

Re: Overemphasizing use of DAW

Mastering a DAW takes at least a year, even then you will learn something new everyday. I think rather then a mindset to create a song ... it's better to learn and explore. When you come to something interesting xpand on that, keeping a lot if versions as you create a tree of ideas. How i learned ab...

Re: Your surprised-you-module(s)

I am constantly finding new uses for my state variable filter (i have two q107 and 107a). I am often surpised ppleasently what i hear also by syncing the contol volages with an oscilator (often with a soh), pushing through it some noise that has gone through an envelope. Its my work house and my maj...

Re: RadioSpiral

I looked up "Daniel Robert Lahey", that song is a good example of what I was trying to convey ... i.e. I had never heard of him before, he has a huge body of work on band camp, I didn't like as much what he had on apple, and his music isn't in some simple genre. I do like his comment on himself on b...
