Re: Best square wave VCO?

Squarewave being a primitive of synthesis.. it’s hard to call anything the ‘best’ square IMO. I mean aside from how well an osc tracks v/oct, and layout, I’m not sure what else you could judge by.

Maybe look for one that has PWM as an option, as that’ll get you some harmonic variety.

Joranalogue makes some sweet utility modules.

Also Noise Engineering makes some pretty swell ones too!

Basically everything both these companies make... love em all.

Re: I need a decent euro mixer preferably with faders

I am in loooove with the WMD-PM. Even with how BIG it is, it is totally worth the HP. It seems hard to justify the HP at first, but once you get used to having so many channels, VCAs, sends, and sliders it’s hard to look back.

Re: Noise Engineering Blog appreciation - anything else like this?

Yeah I love their blog!!! Hate the font they use, it's so hard to read... but whatever. They have consistently produced really high-quality content on their blog, always getting interesting interviews, demos and tutorials. Good on them! If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend reading it. L...

Re: Batumi: two further questions on expert mode

Hi all. Two quick questions on Expert Firmware in Batumi: 1. Can I toggle between expert and factory firmware modes or do I need to reflash each time? 2. The attenuation feature in factory quad mode is extremely useful (each fader attenuates the amplitude on the relevant channel). Is there any atte...

I’ve bought the wmd slider caps for my performance mixer and also used some on my varigate 8+, I have more sliders yo cap though and I’m wondering if anyone has diy options or alternative ones? I’ll buy more of the wmd ones if nothing else but it’s expensive with shipping to NJ Seeing your post las...

Re: Thicker sounding attack on kicks (techniques)

When I think of 'thick' I think of distortion. I recently started to really overdrive my drums through my Tallin VCA, and that seems to make a big difference, you get more squared-off waveforms, and that adds more harmonic content to the simple waveforms. You can always then compress the drums after...

Re: Why does a square waves sound detuned when in the lower range ?

I checked with a digital oscillator, and it happened to me as well. But when I filtered out the harmonics it stopped happening, and I think it starts happening because the fundamental becomes to week because of either lack of bass in the speakers, or if your system can handle it, because it goes so...

Re: What is your favorite small clock divider/multiplier?

So I already mentioned the NE Integra Solum earlier in this thread... but I should also add (and I guess this goes without saying..) that Maths can be a clock divider. I mean, of course right, Maths can do basically anything! To patch a voltage controlled Clock Divider, patch your incoming clock to ...

Re: Best quad VCA

I really like MI Blinds. It's so super versatile, although it's a bit hard to zero out. However I don't use it to mute channels so that's not an issue for me.

Otherwise, yeah Intellijel QuadVCA will do the trick, the exp/lin knob is great for fine-tuning the response.

Re: Finally got over my writer's block

The duet was a nice one. Just a touch of vocals makes a big difference. I wouldn't worry about a writer's block unless you have a commission or something, but it sounds like you are having fun. Yes, as long as they are not MY vocals!! ha ha. There's a joy to a child's voice that is something worth ...

Finally got over my writer's block

Been in a slump recently and couldn't record much of anything... but I finally broke through. Maybe it's just that I'm getting used to the forced lockdown, I dunno. But I feel inspired to record a bunch again. I recorded this on my modular setup on Dec31 2019, just as I was packing my things to move...

Re: 2 to 1 mixer modules?

I agree with flashheart; a multiple might work, but it's not the right way to do it. He already said it's going to a Nord Drum and apparently the trigger velocity can add accents without a separate trigger/voltage. He needs to mix the signals. Ah, I see. I was thinking of this method: OR-combiner_m...

Re: Best Cables 2020

I just use those cheap rainbow-colored Hosa cables. They get the job done, and are quite slender.

I also have a few Stackables mixed in, they are useful for what they do but I also find them bulky and awkward as normal patch cables.

Whatever you do I'm sure it'll look awesome because modular always looks awesome, but be sure to consider the ergonomics of your wall-mount! You could end up with some gnarly back pain if you set it up like the synth store... those places have their modular displays arranged to look very nice but no...

About ModularGrid: - do you keep different racks for others to view, and one to your own "private" planning? Can other users edit your rack, hence changing it in on my site as well? Yeah, you can have quite a few racks on MG for free.. and no, nobody can edit them but you. There's a little 'duplica...

Re: Advise on next modules, please!

You've got a really decent layout going on there. Are you sure about your PSU situation? You might consider at this stage of expansion to sell the uZeus and upgrade to a beefier power supply. Otherwise, if you do stick with the uZeus make sure you don't forget to take out the jumper on the back to m...

mutable tides can be reset in lfo mode - extremely useful when tempo synced too. In a similar vein, Just Friends will do this as well. You can get quite interesting melodies by quantizing it. In the fairly recent technical guide (non-poetry version) they describe a nice Gate-to-Sequence patch (page...

I group them so as to minimize the lengths of patch cables I use. So modules that often get patched together stay close to each other.. seems to have a big effect for me.

I mean, I can patch quite a few different sounds up simultaneously, but now that I've downsized to a 7U case from my 14U, I feel like I come up to the limits of the system pretty often. I typically have about 4-6 different types of sounds going on, and I can surely do a bit more, ...
