Re: Generative Ambient

I think it could have been improved in a DAW and yet inevitably I think it would also have lost something as a result :) Thanks so much for the helpful feedback. I agree with you — there are definitely things that could be improved in the DAW. I have no ideological reason for not using those techni...

Re: how do you practice?

This is a great question. I have thought a lot about this. I spent the first 40 years of my life learning how to play acoustic string instruments, and achieved a certain amount of success in this area. Coming to modular was one of the biggest leaps I ever took, on a par with working on decoupled sco...

Sad Photo

This happened last week. Luckily I had a pair of needle-nosed pliers to get the broken piece out of my synth. The adaptor was for my headphones. Has anybody else had this happen? What do you do if you can't easily pull the remnants out of your jack?

Re: Generative Ambient

I want to thank you all for your kind comments. I really appreciate any feedback. To answer a few questions: I wasn't tempted to fiddle with this in a DAW except to fade in and out at the end. My DAW skills are not that great anyway (we have undergraduates here who can run rings around me in Logic)....

Re: Terry Riley - In C - Modular synthesizer performance using a DIY module

Very cool. I really like what you did.

We did the piece at our school last month — I was the only synth player. Just made MIDI clips of all the loops and triggered them using a Push2. Changed some waveforms, envelopes, etc. here and there. But what you are doing is super.

Generative Ambient

In the limited time I have (18 month baby at home, full time job teaching music theory) I’ve been tinkering with self-patching Magneto and utilizing more of the X side of Marbles. Here’s one of the results — I just let the synth sit there for a half hour while it did its own thing! There are a few n...

Nice job. Especially like 5:57 and 7:04. Best use of the [0279] tetrachord I've heard in a while.

Is it just me, or are those patch cables mysteriously changing color??
I had a little fun with the video editing. Alcohol may or may not have been involved...

Great choice of voicing — I like how there’s a sense of growth and evolution even in a snippet as short as this.

Nice work. It’s enjoyable to see you going back and forth from one instrument to another. Are you using an external sequencer to get the pitched material on the synth?

Very nice! Gets better as you go along. Reminds me a bit of George Crumb's adaptations of earlier music in pieces like "Black Angels". Always nice to see some hybridization of old and new here.

Quick demo

I'm trying to get funds to expand our University's synthesizer, and put together this simple 60-second track to demonstrate to our administrators how versatile it is. Made the track using only modules we own. Namely: Pittsburgh Modular SV-1, Double Helix, Micro Sequence, Disting. Mixed in Ableton. E...

Re: Behringer: practices, ethics, morals and legitimacy.

I don’t have a ton of money to spend on Eurorack — especially now that I have a little baby boy — but what I do have will go to small, independent, innovative companies that produce high-quality, *beautiful* stuff.

Re: You Euro and your MiniBrute 2S

The 2S sequencer is surprisingly good. I wish there some more CV controls for it, and echo the sentiment that it has a steep learning curve. It’s easy to send the sequencer information into other modules if you want. The controls work well for live performance.

Scales + Quadnic + Shifty + Magneto

Here's a first attempt at making something musical using Scales, Quadnic, Shifty, Magneto, + a mess of envelopes & attenuators on the MiniBrute 2. I must say I am not entirely happy with the amount of control I have over the envelopes on the MiniBrute, but it is a LOT fun patching the quantizer. htt...

Re: Lonely life in Modular Land.

You’re in Raleigh, NC? Although they are not into EXACTLY the same grove, the folks at the Electric Violin Shop In Durham might be into modular. They were very nice to me when I bought an amp and DI box from them last year. Perfect Circuit made an interesting demo with violin+Eurorack not so long ag...
