My approach is pretty simple-- all audio is handled in modules, all sequencing and performance is handled by Max.
This sounds like a great general approach to start off with -- lots to think about. Thanks so much for your really helpful thoughts.

MAX/MSP + Modular

I’ve been working with modular for two years now, and built up a reasonably nice 420hp rack. This summer I took a series of private lessons in MAX/MSP from our local guru, and want to move towards using several Expert Sleepers interface modules to do I/O on the modular. For those who have gone this ...

Re: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith — Mosaic of Transformation

Well, whether an instrument sounds realistic or not isn’t the point for a lot of people, nor should it be...as a lifelong string player it just sticks out for me. There are a lot of great things about her work, for sure.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith — Mosaic of Transformation

Looks like KAS released a new album a few days ago — it was featured on Bandcamp today. https://kaitlynaureliasmith.bandcamp.com/album/the-mosaic-of-transformation Listened to several tracks just now. In general I find her music quite appealing, but I must say that I am a little disappointed on this...

Electric Violin + Supercell + Cool Project

In the spirit of finding intersections between old and new, I recorded a Caprice by William Herschel on a Zeta electric violin, and ran the dry audio through Ableton's Convolution Reverb (lockdown means I can't travel to St. Alban's but I can use the reverb profile). Then I took the whole thing and ...

Re: Expert Sleepers disting EX

This is a great development. Now the question is: how many more upgrades for Mk4 -- can we continue to expect that there will be some support for it in the near future? Yes, absolutely. The mk4 is *not* discontinued. Cool -- the new EX is definitely on my radar (the street fighter graphics are fine...

Re: Recent discoveries

Discovered Oscillator Sink's videos on the MiniBrute 2S on YouTube. He made these a year ago. Very helpful, as the MB2S manual is super opaque to me. The vids suddenly make the whole thing so much easier to understand.

Here's one:

Re: Supercell: expanded version of Clouds + Superparasites firmware

Here's a first minute-and-a-half long wiggle on Supercell. Using the pitch sequencer on the Minibrute to drive the upper voice, and a velocity sequence to drive the lower voice. The mingling of the MB's two LFOs through binary addition (Disting) provides a nice trigger sequence for the ADSR, then ou...

Re: Today my small discovery was...

This is actually partially correct. Check the QCD level and you'll notice that it outputs a different level when patched to the MS, compared to when patched to another module. It is a combination of a low input impedance on the MS (there is basically only a diode between the jack and the processor)...

Today my small discovery was remembering how lucky some students are having classes on subjects like this.
Thanks! We’re just trying to keep educating our young people so they can have as many advantages as possible when it comes time to apply for jobs out there in the real world.

Re: Today my small discovery was...

Always was a bit confused as to why Pittsburgh Modular's Micro Sequencer didn't seem to recognize external clock control occasionally. I had all the settings correct on the unit...sometimes the external clock worked and sometimes it didn't. Last week I was doing a ratcheting demo for some students -...

Re: What is your favorite control device?

I would really like to learn how to control my synth using MAX/MSP patches like you do. I have a colleague who is a real expert in that field but I have very little extra time right now to invest in learning the ins and outs. I have had some success using the Ableton CV tools, but probably I should ...

I think it could have been improved in a DAW and yet inevitably I think it would also have lost something as a result :) Thanks so much for the helpful feedback. Re: how do you practice?

This is a great question. I have thought a lot about this. I spent the first 40 years of my life learning how to play acoustic string instruments, and achieved a certain amount of success in this area. Coming to modular was one of the biggest leaps I ever took, on a par with working on decoupled sco...

Sad Photo

This happened last week. Luckily I had a pair of needle-nosed pliers to get the broken piece out of my synth. The adaptor was for my headphones. Has anybody else had this happen? What do you do if you can't easily pull the remnants out of your jack?
