Re: PCBs as Front Panels ?

Here's my first front panel, from JLCPCB. (The apparent streaking in the black area at the bottom is light reflecting from the PCB texture. In person, especially head on, it looks better.) IMG_20200313_160546.jpg I just changed my mind. you can see the dot matrix printer resolution. you can see the...

Re: The 2020 Show Us Your DIY Builds Thread!

I don't post every module I build here, but this was my second attempt at a module built with surface mount parts, and first to be completed successfully without outside assistance... PMFoundations dual ring modulator.

TLDR I wrote some software to generate my panel files.
Excellent! I use KiCad, though. Has anyone done a KiCad equivalent?

Re: [Available!] horstronic Buffmult 2.0

Oh yeah, that was another thing with the SynthCube kit. There were parts added in the newer version of the module but they weren't included, basically it looks like they went by the old BOM with the new board. That was about a year ago and sounds like they still haven't fixed it.

Re: [Available!] horstronic Buffmult 2.0

There isn't, or at least none that I could find when I went to build mine. It's pretty straightforward if you've built similar stuff before, but for your first module build, I'd definitely recommend considering something else. AI Synthesis has some very beginner friendly modules. By the way, the cur...

Re: PCBs as Front Panels ?

the reason why that doesn't exactly work is because there are many ways to do it. it would be like a tutorial on how to make a beautiful painting. you can have your lettering as a pos or negative in any of 3 layers or even all 3 in some combination. Yes, yes, yes. But seeing *a* way to do it might ...

Re: PCBs as Front Panels ?

I wasn't stuck particularly, nor concerned about some specific issue. Just thought it would be helpful in getting a good overall understanding. Anyway, I've gone ahead and made something that looks right and submitted it to JLCPCB. We'll see if it goes through and comes out well. If it does maybe I'...

Some stats compiled out of boredom: For the years 2019 and (so far in) 2020: Tayda announced sales 26 times. Average time between sales announcements: 15.73 days Most frequent time between sales announcements: 14 days Shortest time between sales announcements: 9 days (Nov 11 and Nov 20, 2019) Longes...

Re: PCBs as Front Panels ?

This is an interesting discussion, but I'm still a little hazy on some aspects of it. A "worked example" would help. Would anyone be willing to post a KiCad pcb file for a typical, basic front panel?

Re: PCBs as Front Panels ?

FWIW here are a couple photos of a recent JLCPCB panel. I designed a format dedicated to maximizing the low-cost, 10x10cm PCB offerings. It's a very cost effective solution, especially now that the minimum order is down to 5 units. At standard 1.6mm thickness, there is no rigidity problem. There mu...

As part of the calibration procedure you should have checked you have 1.5V between TP1 and ground. Do you? Do you have 5V between R122 (the end further from R125) and ground? And generally, the voltages on the switch contacts that connect to the resistors should range from 0.5V to 5V. Then the volta...

im not familiar with that circuit, but in general the parameter of a JFET to match is the Idss current. for the J112 its 5mA min, for the 2N5457 its 1mA min, and for the 2N4391 its 20mA min, so they are all quite different. but, without seeing the schematic, i cant say for sure that it wouldnt work...

J112 substitution for NLC timbre!

Has anyone tried a substitution for the J112 JFET in the nonlinearcircuits timbre! ? Tayda has 2N5457, but not J112, listed (out of stock, but listed), and I have a couple 2N4391s in my stash. I hope to get most of the parts from Tayda and would hate to have to send out a separate order just for one...

I guess I'm confused as to the point of all of this. To me the advantage of a modular system is its flexibility, allowing you to choose, configure, and reconfigure the components you use, at the expense of somewhat greater complexity and cost. But if your intent is to clone the appearance and functi...

Update: I built a horstronic buffmult, it works, but the same problem exists: the M-32 KB CV sags to less than 1 V/Oct when plugged into it. But the buffmult outputs have trimmer pots to adjust the gain. So I intentionally miscalibrated one of the outputs for slightly higher than unity gain, just en...
