Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

Man...I do not have it in front of me right now, but I think you might have to go into the settings and change something with MIDI. The problem was actually that the previous owner had erased all of the default Object files. I upgraded it to the latest KOS version and reloaded the factory Object fi...

Re: Sonic Potions LXR Drum Synthesizer

Did you follow the instructions in the manual? I think you have to set the BPM to zero for it to work with external clock.

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

Got it working! Used the v5.5 SCSI2SD which plugs into the port on the rear. One note is that I initially got an error updating the KOS and I figured out that it was because I copied the file to the SD from my Mac, even though I did so in a Virtualized copy of Windows and only ever mounted the drive...

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

Okay, it seems like I need to update the OS and also reload the Objects and maybe some other stuff. I'll report back when that's done, which might not happen until next week -- depends how fast a SCSI2SD can arrive.

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

I ran the ROM check as indicated in the Service Manual and all 4 of the basic ROM chips are PASS. I don't have any extra ROMs like Orchestral, Contemporary, etc. But I still can't figure out how to load just the basic factory sounds. Isn't that what those ROMs are for? That there should be presets 1...

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

The 2500R arrived. I booted it up, did a hard reset, and the Program screen shows "Grand Piano" for the Keymap and "199 11/22/98" in all slots. Turning the encoder wheel does not scroll the list (but the encoder works fine on other screens). Is that normal? Isn't there supposed to be some minimum ba...

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

Ended up going for the 2500R for $290. The seller says it worked great when they stored it a few years ago and they checked the basic operation before putting it up for sale and only the LCD backlight didn't work (I don't care, I always replace old displays anyway). Here's hoping it's 100% good to g...

Re: Patch bay questions

I don't know why most instruments aren't balanced. It's not hard to do. I have a 4-channel balanced output on my modular that cost like $10 in parts if you don't consider the pots, jacks, knobs, and panel. But Korg, Roland, Yamaha, etc can't put this on their $500+ gear? It's super annoying since ev...

Just received the top panel from the manufacturer.
Which manufacturer are you using? Those bare structural panels look great. Curious what's the cost to cut and bend something that big?

The cable has 3 wires (2 + ground). I didn’t solder one of them to anything, on either end.
So you made a regular TS cable. No problem with that, you're just paying for more expensive 2-conductor wire when you really just need 1-conductor wire.

What's the best way to improve file import/export on these? Replace the floppy with a Gotek USB? SCSI Compact Flash drive?

Re: Patch bay questions

If you have balanced gear running into your patch bay with TRS but you're using TS cables for patching, you're unbalancing the balanced signals before they get to your balanced mixer or audio interface. Also, there's no reason to use standard TRS cables with unbalanced instrument outputs. It's still...

Re: Patch bay questions

You can definitely use regular TRS cables with TS jacks, but if one end is expecting it to be balanced you will most likely have a significant drop in audio signal. Do a comparison with a TS cable and you’ll hear the difference. It’s better to either use a TS cable or wire the TRS cable to be pseudo...

I posted months ago (last year?) about Inputs 1 and 2 being noisier than the others and was told this was normal and due to the way it's designed. Who knows.

Re: Cleaning up a Meanwell for basic euro use

What's a reasonable alternative? I feel like the options usually come down to either something like the Mean Well for under $50 or a $400+ linear type. That's a huge difference. I built most of my modules DIY for less than $80 each so I can't really justify spending 30% of the cost of my modules on ...

Re: Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

Wow, thanks, that's very helpful to know such a major difference. It seems rare for a K2500R to go for sale here in Japan, but there's one up now. It's being sold by an online thrift store as "unchecked junk" and someone already bid $300. It's just the base model. Crazy. It also looks like 2 screws ...

Re: Patch bay questions

I have a Behringer PX3000, it sounds fine to me and from what I read before buying it, most people agree it's not the usual Behringer junk, despite the low price. Here are a few things I learned along the way: 1) Unless your studio is absolutely massive and your total cable length from an output dev...

I built a Barton BMC047 Balanced Output module but I put in 1/4 jacks instead of XLR. Sounds great to me. Lots of gain possible. Total cost was less than $30.

Kurzweil K2000R basic model worth $100?

I might have an opportunity to get a K2000R which is the basic model (no sampling or digital I/O cards) for $100-150. Is it worth it? Base K2500R go for 3-5x that price here in Japan and they're not nearly as often available, and it's my understanding that a 2000 and 2500 are basically the same exce...
