Re: Modular patching is good for your brain (and your skin)

I teach Middle School in SoCal, and in addition to totally seeing the ways that the tactile act of patching is somehow mirrored in the brain in healthy ways, I'm also starting a synth program next year at my school. We have students over 90% of whom are socio-economically disadvantaged, many foster...

Re: ES-9 Sound quality test

Me too :-) Just recently I've compared ES-9 to Rme UCX converters, doing the whole phase cancellation tests. A bit sad. I'm sure in a couple of years' time I'm going to look back and think what a waste of time it was to worry about 0.1% differences while I could be creating music. aww yeah... but a...

Hopefully you find this useful. At this point I'm thinking to continue updating the document. I'll try improve the format, structure and design when time allows. If you have something you'd like to directly contribute (ideas to improve the booklet or techniques), send it my way or better yet, post ...

I use the cwejman and schippmann phasers which are both going to be hard to come by and expensive.
Ah yeah, not those ones then :)
well, its something to think about - I like the idea of working on string sounds like that, thanks!

Re: Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

Ah, you are doing it the hard way. I used to track all my parts individually which is why I'm full circle with the BIG PATCH. So I would say to take advantage of effects that can track 1/v per oct so that you can really make it part of the sound. Off the top of my head, I have a delay, freq. shifte...

Re: Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

I would say just make sure you do a fair amount of exploration before settling too much on a voice structure, I find the ability to incorporate subtle AM modulations from reverb and delay pretty interesting at times, having a single point where all the voices meet (like a reverb) but then feedback ...

Re: Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

Why you guys trying to scare me about the jacks??? I've been keeping the same patch since 2019. I'm just about to release a second album using it so it has been very fruitful. As for the OP, I would keep the effects paraphonic. I don't see why you would need it per voice. A filter, yes. Reverb, del...

if you want to shoegaze with your modular, try Caroline Meteore Lo Fi Reverb - it does something specific and it does it really well.

Re: Noob Q about mixing CV & VCA-ing CV

none of the modules in eurorack will be damaged by voltages coming from other eurorack modules in the same system. this is because manufacturers have learned that we should not create modules that require the user to follow specific proceedures to prevent damage. instead the modules are designed to...

Noob Q about mixing CV & VCA-ing CV

Hi -

I've read up & searched but still confused, thanks in advance.

My question is - if I mix CV in a DC coupled summing mixer, do I need to be careful about overall voltage levels that result or can I just use my ears, attenuate to taste etc? Same question for VCA'ing CV.

Thank you!

There's no reason you can't or shouldn't do this! Especially if you are focused on composition as opposed to sound design.
Thanks for the reassurance!

Re: Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

I don't leave patch cords plugged in more than a day or two because it can make cheap jacks unreliable. I do have favorite voices I set up often, though. I have enough modules to make up 16 voices and I generally use 3 or 4 at a time. I do mix up the effects and modulators, so I seldom get the same...

Re: Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

Really, at that stage just buy a desktop synth or semimodular. Well, the 4 main voices are less than half my hp so I have a lot else to work with in a flexible way, plus my rack is also focused on creative mixing and sample manipulation. And of course the voices are tailored to my taste, and also I...

Anyone patch voices in semi-permanent way? (Noob question)

Hi - Can you tell me about how you relate to your voices - stable instruments? flexible instruments? new all the time? I have an exciting first rack that I'm working with. My musical background includes lots of string quartet experience and I'm interested in patching 4 voices in my rack, composing w...
