Someone mentioned the Mum M8. Whilst the knobs are decent and a lot better than many other knobs, they aren't perfect and move a little. They make a slight scraping sound and are more stiff in one direction. Still I'm being anal.
Thanks for reporting M8.

Re: Disting v. Morphagene as a granular processor. Possible?

This might be a good idea for a “single” algorithm for the Disting EX, as it’s twice the knobs and jacks, and more computing power. Still not enough to match a nebulae/arbhar/morphagene, but there’s no need in copying them 1-to-1 anyway.

The Ryk sequencer looks really nice, last I checked was completely sold out though.
It is really good indeed. You'll have to memorize some menu combinations though. I.e. quantizer.

Re: Ryk M185 Sequencer - per step repeat and gate mode

It was all good, until it wasn't. After an hour of playing, the sequencer stopped reacting to the stage switch, being stuck on stage 1. I reworked some of the joints on both boards, and it's back to life, but strangely the switch now reacts to pressure. Well, it behaves differently each time I plug ...

Re: Ryk M185 Sequencer - per step repeat and gate mode

So I tried, and it worked, and I love the thing! Should I bother fixing the power? The joints here kinda sketchy, and the pins are sideways, but it works. Glad it is working ok. The power header does look a little ‘dodgy’ Most importantly is that it doesn’t short between the + / - pins and GND. Tha...

Re: Multiple Plaits system?

Cool enough patches to listen to myself - but nothing I'd want to subject anyone else to. And I do like sharing (shared my guitar music with folks all the time). That's okay, I'm still very much in the learning phase. I have a patch going on right now with Belgrad as the only sound source... every ...

Re: Ryk M185 Sequencer - per step repeat and gate mode

Just finished mine, it's an amazing kit! I almost got it right, but... while soldering the 5x2 power headers, one of the pins moved, and I killed the +5V pad. Is it ok to just leave it alone, or is it used? It's been destroyed entirely, exposing the copper connecting it with the other +5 +12V pad. ...

Re: BEGINNERS - What have you always found to be poorly explained?

Filters are a topic everyone's excited about, but I couldn't get my head around (even still owning a bunch of them). Why filters are so important? How to appreciate them and use them more in the patch?

Also, evolving melody and rhythm before it gets boring. How to go past a basic sequencer patch?

I was going through the Mylarmelodies videos last week, and was like: ok, I need a quad S&H.

In one of the later videos he claimed the Disting S&H was the best he used. I’m curious if he’s going to update this.

Re: Game sound designers / composers to check out

Would be awesome to have guidelines/scripting language to package the material, to turn certain sounds on and off while keeping the timing and musical relations intact, smooth fade-ins and loops, and all that. agreed. i'm on the dev side, and i would love to be able to present this kind of framewor...

Re: Game sound designers / composers to check out

I think one of the strongest points music in games can have over music in other media is the use of adaptive music. This means the music is situational to the state of the player/game or progress made in the game. If i was to venture into scoring games this is something i would look into. Yes, this...

Re: Game sound designers / composers to check out

Can't speak to workflow or trends (all my game soundtracks are for projects that I'll probably never complete,) but as far as "game soundtracks/composers to check out" go, I'll throw in a plug for the work of the composers on the original Descent soundtrack. ~90 minutes of tunes that effortlessly b...

John Chowning creates the first digital FM synthesis algorithm at Stanford University in Palo Alto. He spends seven years perfecting and expanding it. In 1974 Stanford licenses the technology to Yamaha Corporation. Anything to read or to watch about his story? Here is a good start: https://ccrma.st...

Actually, now you mention it, I recently put together an 84hp breakout case, and the two "oscillators" I chose for it were the Disting Mk4 and MI Warps. Plenty of ground to be covered with those fellas.
Good point, the Disting EX would be even better, provided the case is deep enough.

Re: Multiple Plaits system?

Duplication is good, because you really learn the module. An important early goal is to develop an instinct for what your modules do and how it's done, so you can focus your attention on music. A lot of sense in this. 4 Plaits and a Yarns would be a lot of fun. Yarns -> 4 Plaits in the Chord mode :...

I have two Plaits, although only one is fitting in my system at the moment. One is permanently in chord mode and the other is free to do all kinds of things. Frequently there is one being sequenced as a drum voice. Lots of fun getting one module to do kick, snare, and hats. Yes! This is how I see t...
