Re: Most advanced sound designers thread.

OK... so i was thinking of posting this on another music forum - but i sorta never did as most people would just give me some vanilla-arsed bullshit. Probably because the question itself is vanilla-arsed bullshit? ;) There's no "best", it's deeply deeply subjective. For each individual, different t...

Re: Arrangement and fluidity

what has occured to me in a rather lightbubbly way is how different types of music need different processes. i dont think i can write insane drum chop driven jungle/dnb the same way i can write dubstep or trap, which again would have everything thrown out for anything wildly experimental. though one...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020

@neandrewthal regarding preamps - seeing as your a wiggler. You MIGHT have studio mic preamps at hand?? if so - read on. I use a Radial Phono DI (J33) to take the turntable signal and convert it to Mic Levels + do the RIAA conversion. Then it can plug into any mic preamp. I use a preamp intended for...

Re: The CD/LP buying thread.

I got Ovuca's Lactavent double vinyl in the mail a week ago. It's so classic. One of those records that was breakcore before it was a thing, just a guy making distorted breaks on his MPC. I really like the aesthetic, it's basically just four different cutups pressed to their own side of vinyl. http...

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020

wondered if there was a way to reduce the turntable rumble? I am using the rega felt matt, and I think upthread someone recommends a thicker matt ( like on a Technics 1210). that would be me - im using the original RGS010 found on the older technics 1200s. it made a big difference for me when dubbi...

...that Stockhausen's "Licht" cycle is pretty freakin' awesome. It's really more jazz than classical, and it's turned me into a real fan. The dude was bonkers, but also a genius. Helikopter-Streichquartett (English: Helicopter String Quartet) is one of Karlheinz Stockhausen's best-known pieces, and...

should have mentioned above, if you're into this stuff, look into "Bloody Fist Records". sort of like the Australian incarnation of what happens when a bunch of bored teenagers living next to steelworks do in their free time, exponents of this label: https://youtu.be/Teihfv9MY-0 Terrornoize Industri...

It's a bit rich that i give this advise - while also struggling with the very point OP does. I guess of late - i've been trying to catch my seriously good moments of inspiration - and take notes on what pushes my productivity further...none of them has been eqing or sound design. in my experience - ...

Re: Arrangement and fluidity

you know what else is great at preventing you from finishing tracks? Not having a clear enough picture of the genre/style/whatever it is. Experimentation is good - but i find - the more i can hear a song in my head before touching my instruments - the closer i'll get to a finished tune. Expermint fi...

Re: Arrangement and fluidity

you said you've analysed - but....have you sat down and and done a proper study on how the music you like deals with progression? i mean - sit down with grid paper and draw out the structure: [ INTRO 32 BARS ] [FIRST DROP 64 BARS ]....etc doing this will tell you everything you need. What's also goo...

agree with OP... it's very frustrating especially when the modules i want to use my LFO's with most are next to useless without extremely focused offsetting, attenuation and at times inversion.

^ yep - i have the above solution for critical use, but built a fixed gain DIY rod elliot phono pre with built in subsonic filter. Great for every day listening! The benefits of my above solution though are that the whole chain is balanced as soon as the signal leaves the turntable :-)

Re: Hi-fi Gurus: Stylus/Cartridge upgrade for an old Rega in 2020

for those interested, for phono preamplification, i use a 2 stage solution: a) RIAA ONLY - performed by Radial Phono DI...this gives me mic level outputs which i can plug into ANY mic pre. b)the above - goes directly into D.A.V Electronics BG-1 mic preamp which has matched (to 0.25dB) stepped gain. ...
