Re: Serge NCOM. Ever wish for more than 31 steps?

If the NCOM works like the VCD, it would probably require some sort of analog to digital conversion to get the division displayed in any way: The NCOM generates a stair of 1/12V steps, then uses a VC comparator to determing which will be the top step. That's your divisor. Since the counter will hav...

If the NCOM works like the VCD, it would probably require some sort of analog to digital conversion to get the division displayed in any way: https://sdiy.info/wiki/CGS_voltage_controlled_divider By the time the division is chosen, its already in the analog realm; any sort of (accurate) display woul...

Re: A bit of a rant. State of tech in 2020.

What does “song mode” in a hardware sequencer give you, that having a library of patterns you can perform as a song does not? In a “studio” setting you can use a DAW, in a performance setting, you’re already piloting the hovercraft. What’s the advantage to having a chain of patterns stored as oppos...

I check him out from time to time. Its nice to get an opinion on gear that isnt 95% glowing, unlike most other non-sponsered synth gear videos.

And really, a lot of the stuff isn't that bad. Just annoying or inconveient.

Re: Picking a Function Generator

The biggest problem I have with function generators is I only have one of them. DUSG is on my list for my second, though I have though of designing/building my own. I want more flexibility over retriggering behavior. I don't think I have found a module yet that lets you change that.

Re: Panel wiring twisted pairs

note that it's best to only do this with signal and ground pairs. doing it with signal pairs will just create lots of cross-talk. one time i did it with an input wire and output wire without thinking, and wow did it oscillate quick! also, i've heard that in theory it's better to wrap the ground wir...

The point is that no for-profit entity (and certainly no large for-profit entity) is clean of corruption and exploitation. That's a pretty bold statement. The ethical considerations don't stop at the company who creates a product, but at the base-level raw materials that were mined out of the earth...

Re: Seeking Layout Suggestions

If I can throw something into the mix, I'd move Marbles closer to the center. There's just so much you can do with it, it can drive nearly any part of your system you want it to. I do this on my own hodgepodge of a system, and the wild choice of putting my main oscillator on the bottom right, envelo...

Most of these modules do the same thing, I'm not convinced Maths has anything they don't, other than a mixer/attenuverter section (which I have needed to reach for with my Rampage now and then). They do however each have somehting unique about them (or should). pugix's comparison above is really goo...

Re: Moog Subharmonicon + Euro

I recently got a Subharmonicon and I've also been having a hard time. At minimum it really wants to be paired with a reverb or delay (like every demo on youtube has it). Once I stopped using it as my focus and instead as the pad-maker or driver for other parts of my rack, I feel like it really opene...

Re: Ugliest module, best looking one !

I'm not crazy about white or exposed PCB material. Or black-and-gold panels. Or Magpie panels. In a perfect world, everything would be grey aluminum. :sstorm: (edited because i'd rather be more positive) I don't like the Magpie panels either, but I usually see them for NLC modules, which conversely...

@EATyourGUITAR

I used to think "how hard can it be" for things I didn't understand, but its posts like yours that have change that into "how particular does it get?". I've had a RND Step on my list for a bit, and now I'm more interested to see how its set up under the hood.

Re: Sample and Hold sag / pitch droop.

I bet there could be some interesting uses for a drooping S+H. Probably not for any kind of fast, precise music, but maybe a slowly degrading tune; the filter cutoff reducing gradually; the master tuning dropping everything (sort of like a how choirs could end a song in a different key than they sta...

Re: Noob question about Low Pass Gates

Even if vactrols go by the wayside you can make them yourself with an LED, an LDR, and some tape (or heat-shrink, if you wanna be fancy). I love my DPLPG, its like it takes care of everything without being complicated. And the variance between vactrols lends itself to characteristics you can rely on...

Re: List of Euro Oscillators that use the CEM 3340? And Knowledge

NLC has a 3340 available, and I think its pretty great. The pulse is maybe a little buzzy, and the sine isn't perfect (obviously), but works great, and the extra features andrew added in are also pretty great e.g. a "mod" input for the sync, which I have only kind of figured out but is still cool, a...

There are a lot of college kids who are eager to show how smart (or clever) they are. Or at least, there is always one around somewhere. Or at least, if engineering classes are anything like CompSci, there is usually one in one of your classes most semesters (less so in graduate courses).

I started (just this year) with a volca modular, and shortly after a Minibrute 2S. If I were to start over I would skip both and grab a Mother-32, or a Lifeforms SV1, or nearly any other semi modular that can be mounted in a eurorack.
