Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Fyi I asked soma about testing the NXPs recently (fried mine) and got the response that if you can get a square wave out if them with an oscilloscope the issue is probably the connected transistors. they also confirmed that NXP 4093a from any source should be fine, they're not from a particular weir...

Re:

does anyone else find the control board design an odd choice? I mean that instead of having the pcb-mountable components mount to the pcb via regular footprints, we get this sort of smd type style with THT components. Anyone know why this is? I actually don't mind it, btw. But it seems an unnecessa...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

If you want a cheap option you could buy some on alibaba (2 months shipping) and substitute standard M3 10mm or 12mm bolts while you wait I'm collecting parts for a Lyra build and I went this path - they arrived within 2 or 3 weeks. Nice, how was the quality? I ordered mine 5 weeks ago using AliExp...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

ffs i think I cooked my build! The ground hum thing was driving me nuts so I flipped the board to test voltages on the test points and i connected the in out board upside down by mistake. When i realised i reconnected it the proper way and but the voices now dont sound at all... an exhausting and up...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Feck! Things put together (still working on an enclosure + panel) trying to troubleshoot this in the mean time. Quite a confusing electron maze to grapple with! Are these sounds supposed to happen or is it an artifact of something wrong? Hard to say in some cases. - Grounding issues: There is defini...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Look at the main board...there are marked test points with voltages. 5.87 V, 2.45 V, 6V...and the power and ground rails are well marked all over the board I can of course see the test points. My question was regarding whether there is any existing documentation on recommended tests to conduct to c...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Finally about to get this pre modded build to the point where I can power it on. I've seen mention of test points around, I can't seem to find documentation on things to test for am I missing something?

Re: Dreadbox Medusa monosynth

Personally I feel like the real value I get out of it is as a controller and modulation source for other gear. I feel like its a first draft of what a modern controller should be really able to do by now and nothing else gets close. It's let down in this regard by things like the ancient Midi 1.0 st...

Re: Lyra-8 DIY expansion and panels

fyi, if anyone needs to source 1P8T switches for this I think you can probably just use Alpha 1P12T rotary switches as they are described as having a tab for setting the total number of positions. Im pretty sure Tayda stock these for cheap.

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

I'd like to make something myself for the learning experience. Im picturing more of a standalone device tbh with an integrated micro controller so it can interface with my other midi gear (I don't have the money for eurorack) sounds great for folks who have a lot of CV modulation on hand tho!

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Hmmm on closer inspection I think you're right needing to connect ground makes it look like its not outputting 0-10v but switching within the ornament 8. From the manual: "Output contact LYRA . While the cell is active, this contact is connected to ground. When the cell is not active, the contact is...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Thx for your response! I like creative constraints and a Lyra 8 is what I will have so it's what I will use. Plenty of potential for some hacky cross modulation with my Medusa and Axoloti. Still waiting on the PCB's so will have to experiment when its built. The Ornament 8 documentation states that ...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

SOMA are putting out a sequencer for Lyra 8/Pulsar, the Ornament-8 interfaces with the Lyra 8 using an adapter that seems to complete the circuit when it receives CV input. I'm still very new to electronics but I assume this is achieved with a transistor per voice? The Ornament 8 looks amazing but I...

Re: Lyra-8 DIY expansion and panels

I could be interested, what are you charging for the standard panel? has it been designed for 12x12 hammond enclosure or are they the original 10x10? (need to factor in the cost of a custom built 10x10 box if so)

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Laser cut plywood! It was supposed to be a prototype but it may end up being the official face plate for a while. I may try staining it. I would like to try acrylic or steel if I have time. Stain on that would look sik! Couple of polyurethane spray coats to seal then wait a month to sand it smooth.

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

I don't live in the US/Canada but if I did I'd seriously consider getting something like this: https://www.barkerdoor.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DRAWERBOX%2DBALTIC%2DDOVETAIL They do custom ply boxes for cheap and they've got a sale on. Like $15 USD for machined dovetailed box parts you asse...

Re: Soma - LYRA-8 DIY Kit

Thanks Evicshen! I need to do a second order to get non Tayda bits, your list defs helps. Struggling to find solid dimensions of the control/main board for some reason. Does anyone have the precise dimensions handy? Are they exactly 10x10"/25.4cmx25.4cm? I'm asking as I'm planning to do some but not...

Seriously?! These 1uF caps are missing from the BOM too!? I'm going to post my spreadsheet of discrepancies once I'm done putting together this kit.
Much appreciated! About to get my order together for this. This thread has been so necessary

Re: Dreadbox Medusa monosynth

The documentation desperately needs updating, I've emailed Jacek on a few things and got the response that they've basically moved on to the tracker at this stage and their position is there is not much scope left for firmware improvement due to just about maxing out the DSP. Useful details from the...
