Re: VCAs with Character

Plankton Electronics NuTone is a distortion unit that also does VCA duties; the VCA influences the input gain, with an attenuator. As with all tube-emulating distortion circuits, the higher the gain, the greater the distortion.

Re: Intellijel Quadrax

Blinking is kind of ok for right after you change the level but it won't help much for seeing the current level of attenuation. An expander would be pretty big... there's 4 CV inputs, 4 channels, and 4 destinations per channel, so you'd need 64 attenuators :) Yeah, but with really small knobs... :h...

Re: Intellijel Quadrax

@Dcramer technically it's possible but I'm not sure about the UI. Right now it relies on brightness, which is not great already, if there were 5 or 6 levels it might be too difficult to tell them apart? Will think about it, or if you have any suggestions ... Expander? Probably not going to make any...

it's a pretty elegant patch in a box. Yeah, I'm coming to appreciate how much thought went into the concept and just how much different it is from the alternatives. I thought I knew in advance exactly what I was going to use the 0-ctrl for, but I realize now that my conceptualization was far too si...

Re: Today my small discovery was...

The 0-ctrl in running mode isn't like a sequencer, it's a looping envelope generator/slew limiter, but with no attack control. It's maths (or mini slew, or what have you) in looping mode (the attenuator part is the strength row) with a very intricate patchable step-sequenced slope/duration (the time...

Interesting exercise, as I could see that I've been a rather "on the beaten path" sort of builder. No lurking obscurities here:

Thanks for sharing Chick's advice list; those a lot of fundamental but profoundly challenging concepts for a spontaneous musician/improviser to stick with. If it helps, I know that they are working on investigating the artifacts with at least one unit (mine) and said they’ve made some progress tracking down potential explanations. I’m impressed by MakeNoise customer service in the midst of a major new product launch and the general pandemic constraints.

Total master. Curious, does anyone know if there are recordings similar to this performance? It's almost a mix of Miles in the Sky + In a Silent Way which have been my go to chill out albums lately. I think Black Beauty: Live at the Filmore album is this band. Great great record, possibly my favori...

Coming here to break a gear buying habit is like touring with Motörhead to get sober. Joking aside, if it’s really affecting other areas of your life it’s not a bad idea to get help from a counselor. Obsessive acquisition behavior is often a symptom of a larger issue. I have a friend who is a counse...

Re: What's a utility

I guess I consider anything that's not a sound source, audio effect (filters included) or controller (sequencers included) a utility. Obviously that's not a one size fits all arrangement. Doesn't really matter though. As it pertains to that thread, the crux of it was to identify fun, playable modul...

Re: What's a utility

A module meant primarily for altering, shaping or otherwise modulating CV. Thanks, that makes sense. Clock generators would obviously be out, right, since that's generating a pulse wave. However, maybe a clock modulator might be a utility, since it changes the rate of that pulse wave? Edit: And sle...

Didn't want to highjack a thread, so this is a continuation/extension question related to this thread: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=244353#p3455859 In my book utilities are mixers, attenuverters, mults, in/out, and MIDI to CV. Re: Playable Utility modules

I manipulate mixers as utility modules in real time in every patch for adjusting levels. I've recently concluded that I don't need much in terms of controllers in my case because of how well I get along with knobs. Quadratt 1u is a personal favorite of mine; I have been using it as a performance mix...

Re: Simple Standalone Sequencer

Ha, in all this conversation I decided to just pull the trigger on Detroit Modular's last in-stock 0-ctrl, it seems to once again be out of stock in a lot of places so I figured I'd either better buy now or potentially wait quite a while. I wonder how many threads like this turn out that way? (proba...

Re: Simple Standalone Sequencer

I've used an SQ1 with both modular and standalone, and it's a great choice for immediacy and visual feedback. My experience has been more positive in using it for CV than melodic material, it's not super performable, switching direction on the fly can be a little futzy and you can't change clock div...

Based purely on the factual content of what’s posted here, and even without Switched On Austin presenting their side of things, I’d certainly feel comfortable ordering from them. I’m also glad the thread title was changed, it invites a more careful read. My greatest hope is that after this thread mo...

Posting factual experiences about stores seems a good idea to inform other consumers, but I think if it’s purely factual, then the thread title could be changed to reflect the update to the facts of the situation. For a small business with a highly networked community of potential shoppers, a public...

I'm listening to Suzanne Ciani right now and thinking about this question, because she's an interesting case in point. I'd guess nearly everyone reading this knows about everything I'm writing, so I apologize if this sounds didactic. Her background is classical piano and traditional music compositio...

Re: there is no ideal arrangement of modules

Small difference; I actually was talking about drawing up color codes for ports when figuring out where modules would go on a planner, not for wires later. I do use color coding for wires, but it's by signal path rather than by type of signal (e.g., the gate sequencer, oscillator, modulators, VCA, e...

Re: there is no ideal arrangement of modules

Thanks again so much for this discussion, it's been very helpful. And I think I landed on a "sufficient" arrangement that isn't perfect, but that works. I've used a bunch of different concepts to refine how to arrange, including signal flow, patching efficiency, and inspiration! Hearing again and ag...
