Re: Recommend a reverb unit (rack or pedal) for ambient?

By coincidence I also have a MicroVerb 2, and LARGE 4 is indeed good fun - but if you run it through a compressor it gets very noisy as it tails off. I also have a Big Sky, and the two units sound great chained together. The MicroVerb is limited by the fact it only has presets, no tone control etc. ...

Re: Behringer Roland System 100M clone

It makes sense that the UK is perhaps better served than the US where, I've had modules on order for several weeks now with Sweetwater. I just thought with the recent super partnership Sweetwater would be the best place in the US to order but they can't tell me when they will have any modules in st...

Penguin Café Single

There's a stereotype that people build a modular synth and then never do anything with it. I am aware of this stereotype so I decided to record an up-beat track based on a slowly mutating bassline with melodic variations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LI1ONH04VI I call it "Single" after the first...

Re: Games as time capsules

I just dug out my old PS2 and put in GTAIII to listen to the virtual radio stations, and it dawned on me that Rise FM is a snapshot of pre-deadmau5 EDM. Wipeout and Wipeout 2097 for the original PlayStation stand out in that respect. Especially the second game. I got into modern electronic music fr...

Re: Behringer 909 announced

I have an RD8, and until I went on the internet - that was my first mistake - I didn't realise it was supposed to have timing issues. Judging by the serial number my unit is a December 2019 model. I was intrigued by the trigger outputs, and I've tried feeding these into my Doepfer A-166 to make litt...

Re: Modules for arp like reedy flutey sounds

I think it's a combination of the filter, and the fact that the Odyssey at least only has sawtooth and square waves. I have a Korg ARP Odyssey, which isn't the real deal but apparently sounds very close to the originals. With the filter turned up the basic waveforms don't sound particularly characte...

Re: Gear you own multiples of.

Lot of great responses here, curious if those who have multiple 303 style boxes actually use them simultaneously. Seems like a narrow range of sounds and it could be difficult to get them sitting in the mix together. Do you do a polyphonic thing or is this about the workflow? Perhaps separate effec...

Re: What will Dieter Doepfer's place in synth history be?

As the Godfather of the eurorack format, and the maker of the most comprehensive set of modules in modular synth history, I think his contribution is profound. In the coming decades, what will his place in synth history be? Any chance he will become as iconic as the other bigdogs? People tend to fi...

Re: 90s synths going for peanuts...

Perhaps someone can jog my memory. I remember in the actual 1990s picking up a sound module that was even at the time dirt-cheap. I think it was British, and it resembled the Cheetah MS6 - it looked like the most generic thing imaginable. It was digital, and it supposedly had a bunch of synth models...

Re: Gear you own multiples of.

I own two Behringer Model Ds. The first one I put in my eurorack, leaving me with an empty Model D case. Then a formerly-euroracked example without the case popped up on eBay recently, so my plan is to put that in my empty case thus giving me two Model Ds. It's going to be so much fun keeping them b...

I don't know about NZ, but Korg sells a pack of six patch cables plus a pair of mono 3.5-1/4" adapters for £12: https://shop.korg.co.uk/index.php/patch-cables-for-sq-1.html I haven't had any problems with them and the adapters are a nice bonus. There are cheaper options on eBay, but not much cheaper...

Re: Please Critique My First Rack

Have you thought about where you're going to put the A-199's spring tank? It's a shame Doepfer doesn't put a little hatch in the top-right corner of the module faceplate so that you could route the cables outside. I understand it's good form to move it away from the PSU. You could perhaps drill a ho...

Are these modules just very very popular ? or are they practically impossible to find in stock anywhere on the planet ? At least here in the UK the Behringer System-100 modules appear to be the only eurorack modules that Amazon carries, so I wonder if Amazon gets all the stock and sells out quickly...

Re: Doepfer A-199 Spring reverb. Do I need one?

It's an old thread, but the Doepfer A-199 is one of two things that finally persuaded me to build a eurorack system. I remember reading about the VCS3 and ARP 2600 in the 1990s; the thought of them having mechanical reverb effects was curiously appealing. A-199s pop up on eBay fairly regularly for £...

Re: Very small rack for toy piano type sounds?

At the risk of repeating myself there are eurorack music boxes that produce toy-piano-like sounds, including this thing which doesn't appear to be for sale but looks fascinating: http://vud.org/musicbox.html The same chap has a range of custom modules, including one that uses amplified stones(!). On a tangent there's also a range of eurorack music boxes, including the Error Instruments Acousting Echoes, and this one that uses paper tape: http://vud.org/musicbox.html https://vimeo.com/160907171 Which raises the possibility of e.g. jamming with barcodes or random strips of paper, or taping the...

And then one day the synthesisers will control us. They'll learn to generate sonic pulses that can control the human mind, and then instead of human beings listening to synthesiser music there will be synthesisers listening to human beings.

Gurgling, burping noises and so forth.

Re: Advice for noob on distinguishing genre in demos from what modules can actually do

I'm aware that its easier to get interested in modules that I see in demos where I like the genre, rather than having a vision of what the module can do and how it could help me in my own sounds. This is why I like Paolo, the SynthMania chap. Admittedly he doesn't cover modular gear, but he does sh...

Re: best & "most unique" sounding standard modules?

I remember reading a while back that Ridley Scott came very close to working on Doctor Who. The original 1960s Doctor Who, not the modern version. He began his career in the 1960s as a set designer for the BBC, and he was assigned to design the sets for the second serial - this is often conflated in...
