Re: Behringer Beystep!

One of the main selling points all along for the Arturia Keystep has been that you get a sequencer AND an arpeggiator AND a controller keyboard for peanuts! Behringer's main selling point for pretty much anything they ever made has been that you can get something resembling a classic, vintage, out-o...

Re: Can we talk about through-zero FM?

Thanks for your replies.
I spent a few more hours now, after reading this, and had a blast. I don't know how to describe it, but somehow getting my expectations calibrated liberated my thought patterns. Such an astonishing range of sounds, I'll be using the Rubicon a lot.

Re: Can we talk about through-zero FM?

Yeah, OK, sorry for the old topic.

Thanks. I'll feel less stupid playing around with it now.
I really like some of the sounds I can make with the Rubicon, and I'll use it a lot going forward, just not for those sudden, dramatic FM detours (and return) I was hoping for. :)

Can we talk about through-zero FM?

I recently got a version 1 Intellijel Rubicon, and I have some questions, ranging from noob to medium, I guess. Google results, from scientific papers to megalomaniac YT videos, tell me that Through Zero FM is the solution if my problem is that an oscillator changes its pitch when you apply modulati...

Re: Spring reverb tank mounting orientation

I turned them over and mounted them opening down. Had to solve a few little issues, but now it’s ok. I noticed a slight improvement in how far I can push the signal in before it clips, so I guess that confirms your headroom hypothesis, and at least the same, perhaps slightly longer tails. The large ...

Re: Disapointing Modules

I'm not going to name anyone or anything, but I recently got a module in the mail that disappointed in multiple ways. First of all, it has two PCBs, and the second one is only connected by the pins, like an Arduino shield or something, and came off in my hand. Not very impressive. Then, once I'd pie...

Re: Spring reverb tank mounting orientation

Thanks. The tanks are up top in the rack, and there are no live or stripped wires anywhere. I know, I made it. If they don't start picking up EM noise I'll just leave them uncovered, I think. The risk of stuff touching the springs in there is pretty damn near zero, I'm mostly worried about exposing ...

Re: Electrophobia and Patching

I think this is a great question for several reasons, and you have already received many good answers. I'm fairly comfortable around low voltage electronics, but I have a healthy respect for mains power. When I built my rack, doubt and uncertainty made me stop to double (and triple) check just about...

Spring reverb tank mounting orientation

I have installed two spring reverb tanks in the rack, but they are marked with a 'B' and should thus be mounted with the opening down. I installed them upside down for convenience, and It sounds great, but I have been told that it makes enough of a difference to the character of the reverb, so I hav...

Re: Montarbo Six on its way, does anyone here use one?

Oh, I like this thing a LOT! The pots were a bit scratchy at first, but I just rotated them all frantically for a couple of minutes and they were good as new. The 15" element serves up a deep and precise bass, quick to respond, clean and revealing, and mindbogglingly loud. I have set it up in a smal...

Re: Does everyone eventually have to get a Maths?

Too many functions in one module for me I am in the process of purging my rack of anything digital, anything with memory, anything with hidden functions, and, to make quoting you relevant, multi function modules. I don't mind if an EG has a loop or cycle button so it can be an LFO, but I do mind if...

What is that? Another YouTube egotist? Ignoring the obvious irony of asking other people to google for you whether someone is an 'egotist' because I certainly recognize the impulse. I'm old enough to be this guy's dad, and YouTube egotists don't generally impress me much. But this guy has won me ov...

Re: Utility modules that make you happy?

I use Kinks in every patch, but I’m pretty sure any variety of logic, sign manipulation, and S&H would make me just as happy. My Maths is always crowded with cables, I have to pick what to use it for. It may serve several masters, but it’s all so delightfully well done and it really inspires me to e...

Re: How did you pick your sequencer?

Well, I just bought Doepfer A-155/154 with less than 72hp left to fill in my rack. I have to perform module triage. I have gone through a few different sequencers, and I know that the Doepfer approach is what I prefer for everyday sequencing, I want rows of knobs to twist and switches to flip. I’ve ...

Beautiful music and so inspiring. I’m sampling my running Keystep as we speak, and I got heaps of ideas and new thought prosesses from seeing this.
Seven months. That’s six months and several weeks longer than I’ve had anything going on in my rack. :hihi:

Re: Patch and Tweak book?

Hidden in-between, you can find some patch examples that I've found useful. I like the way functions and patches are described using a system with a library of fairly easy to understand symbols and coloured lines. They are always designed using the specific low level functions you need. You're never...

Re: WMD Arpitecht

Im wondering: What do you use to sequence it? I just got one about a month ago or so, and obviously I haven’t really gotten to the depths of it yet, but I mostly send it a fast clock, and sometimes a sequence of triggers from the uStep to break the rhythm up. Then I have mostly played with two thin...

@ Hovmod I do think you made it clear and I get what you're saying. Even if it doesn't really matter -or you can't physically tell- you still want to know. Appreciate the post. On the ohter hand you brought up something that's always seemed a little strange to me. The emphasis on "the audio signal ...

Re: Is CMOS still analog? Best way to call out 'chip' logic vs uP logic?

Can you tell if the vinyl you are listening to was cut using a digital delay on the feed to the cutting head or whether a tape machine with an offset playback head was used? Genuinely interested, because according to your thesis it makes an audible difference and you can hear it. No, I can't, and n...

Re: Is CMOS still analog? Best way to call out 'chip' logic vs uP logic?

I want to know if my *audio* signal has been converted to binary at any point and whether all or parts of the process it goes through are truly analog or whether there is DSP anywhere in the chain. I'm not saying I discriminate hard against devices that employ DSP, but I want to know. A CMOS can be ...
