Putting a gate on ALL your synths?

I was playing around with my mixer and had the gains pretty high and some of my synths were a bit noisy as far as buzzing or white noise. I upgraded to a digital mixer so I put a gate on a few of the channels and it helped with the noise so I was just thinking to myself, what if I put a gate on ALL ...

Moog Minitaur Question

I've read a lot of reviews on this little beast and it sounds like it is capable of some very intense bass tones. Question is don't you need a good sine wave to get the subs really moving? The Minitaur only has sawtooth and squarewave but I thought sine waves were the foundation of strong bass? Is t...

Had the pest control professionals come in and they didn't find any roaches or signs of them in the house. They left a few traps (which haven't caught anything), did a spraying in the house and also did the outside perimeter spraying. I feel a lot better about this now and it looks like I fixed this...

Thanks for all the help everybody and to the cockroach expert that studied them yes I am definitely serious about this but it sounds like I might not have to worry as much as I am. I have a dog so anything that I do or an exterminator does would have to be pet-friendly. I'm keeping my house clean, I...

I haven't actually seen any and I've looked around for droppings and so on. I don't have a cat but I have a dog. I have seen centipedes in the house before late at night so I think there might be a few centipedes hiding around the house. We keep the house very clean with regular vacuuming and no ope...

Cockroach Scare

We recently discovered that someone down the street from us has cockroaches in their house and this is worrying me with my synths and music gear. We keep our house clean and we don't leave food laying out or anything so I would hope that they don't come our way but I want to be safe and make sure th...

Compact MIDI Keyboard Controllers with Actual MIDI Ports?

I can't believe it's so hard to find one but I'm wondering where I can find a compact MIDI keyboard controller with an actual MIDI port on it. So many of them only have USB and not MIDI ports. I'm looking to hook this up to some of my analog synths. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Static on my mixer?

It's been probably a year since I used my studio and I went in there today. When I use the mute buttons on my mixer I am getting a lot of static. All I basically have to do is just barely touch them and I hear static. If I wiggle them around a bit the static level goes louder and softer so if I move...

So if the bass disappears at anywhere in the room I need to turn it up more? I love having bass in music but I find it so hard to figure out how loud it should be.

The last track I sent away for mastering the company said my bass was WAY too high.

Yeah I have a sub but lots of times I overdo it with bass cause it sounds great in the studio but when I play it in the car or on a home system it's way too bassy.

Well yeah I'd love to have it on a big system so too much bass would be overkill but I also want it to sound decent when people listen to it in their cars or on a home system.

Thanks for the tips...I copied what the sub-bass was playing and did that on a different sound with more high-end and better treble and it seemed to help. I also turned the sub down and that seemed to make it clearer now too! So I have nice rich deep bass and some sounds in the high-end but now it s...

And one last question...

How loud should JUST the sub-bass be? Should this be fairly quiet so as to not take over your mix?

I think part of my culprit was that I had my sub-bass turned up too loud. I alway think it needs more bass but when I turned the sub down it seemed much clearer and more even. I also brought the hi-hats and such up a bit and I think it's sounding better now!! Thanks for the tips!! I find MAKING musi...

Anybody else have the habit of filtering too much?

The music I make is dark sounding so I tend to lowpass filter a LOT of my sounds so of course when I burn a CD and listen to it in the car the entire track sounds muffled and lacking the high end! I know that this is from all the filtering to make my sounds darker but I have a hard time leaving ever...

And part two of this question...

Should you always run your bassline through a compressor to give it more presence or that's not needed?

How much do I trust the waveform?

So I'm working on an ambient piece and I throw it into Audacity just to see the waveform and it's little. So I use the amplify tool and it needs like a 6dB increase to bring it to zero. This can't be good so I go back to the song and turn up the 3 sounds I'm using to as loud as I can get them before...
