Re: Social Entropy Engine

I think that the Engine manual is a GREAT reference manual but a pretty bad user manual. That is, if you're just trying to search it to find a specific thing it's pretty quick to do so and is generally well explained but it doesn't do a good job of narratively talking through and considering the hum...

Roland MV-8000 and MV-8800. You can even hook up a mouse and vga monitor.

Re: SSL Six. New small format mixing desk

I have read reviews and this whole thread and I just can’t get my head around the workflow on this thing at all. I’m glad people are happy but I just can’t figure out how or why someone would opt for this unless they have like two pieces or gear.

Re: Roland TR8S questions

I recently got an 8S after years of using the regular -8 every day. The 8S really rules in general and feels like a nice upgrade. But: - there's no global assigning of individual outputs, which makes me INSANE. It has to be set and saved per kit. - the menu diving is really bad for everything other...

Re: Anybody make a performance mixer like this anymore ?

The MX-1 is super cool and I keep almost buying one but the inputs and USB situation is just so bizarre. I love Roland but they always use weird nonsensical “Roland logic” in their design decisions. And even though I’ve read the manual I still truly don’t understand what’s actually compatible over t...

It’s also worth not forgetting just how LONG they left users waiting, to the point where people started a petition and it was only after that that they fixed “some” fo the problems. https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2016/03/24/tempest-drum-machine-users-petition-for-an-os-update/ I swore I’d never ...

The greatest missed opportunity in the entire history of music gear. I was one of the first owners - had a very low serial number, and contributed a ton to the community. I even used the Tempest to teach a creative drum synthesis workshop at the very first Knobcon. I don’t think I could have been m...

Just running into this with USAMO - instant death, and of course I have a deadline. I messed around with the new logic for the past week and was impressed at how solid it was too.

I just got a used Hermod and while it’s cosmetically great the encoder requires a very surprising amount of force pressing down before it registers. Is this normal? Is it like this at first and then breaks in?

Re: Why is the Mother 32 so expensive?

If you look, you’ll find this trend across almost all used gear on reverb and it’s clearly a result of Covid. A few theories, and it’s probably some combination of: 1. People got stimulus money and have been buying gear so the used supply is much smaller 2. Many people are unwilling to go ship thing...

Re: Never meet your heroes

EMS Synthi. Uninteresting, uninspiring, felt like a homemade kit that was going to fall apart under even gentle use, sounded about as good as a monotron or volca. For the life of me I will never underhand the hype and the status and can only conclude that it’s the rest of mass psychosis.

Re: Is the Alpha Juno 2 really that tedious to program without the PG-300?

I don’t find it super tedious - it’s architecturally simple, the presets are actually pretty damned great as starting points, and there’s a TON of sysex of patches out there to explore as well. I use an iPad editor for it but half the time just use the wheel. I really love the Alpha 2 - it’s got a g...

OPZ, end of discussion. I’ve done this for decades starting with a Roland PMA5, then Yamaha QY70 and 100 as well as Nintendo DS with the korg cart, iOS apps, OP1, etc. etc. OP-Z is the answer.

Hi Hermod users - legato-only pitch slides are a big part of my sound and I’m trying to figure out if the hermod can do them. I know it can do constant portamento but I’m trying to see if it can do portamento only when two notes overlap. Any workarounds?

Live interactive effects for the whole mix

Other than the dated Kaoss pad, what are some good devices to strap over the whole mix when playing live (or most of it) for real-time tweaking? I’m interested in gating/slicing, filtering, tape/vinyl spin downs, and other dynamic things like that that I can use for dynamic effects or transitions.
