Re: The Tempest Is Dead, Long Live The Tempest

It’s also worth not forgetting just how LONG they left users waiting, to the point where people started a petition and it was only after that that they fixed “some” fo the problems. https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2016/03/24/tempest-drum-machine-users-petition-for-an-os-update/ I swore I’d never ...

Re: The Tempest Is Dead, Long Live The Tempest

The greatest missed opportunity in the entire history of music gear. I was one of the first owners - had a very low serial number, and contributed a ton to the community. I even used the Tempest to teach a creative drum synthesis workshop at the very first Knobcon. I don’t think I could have been m...

Just running into this with USAMO - instant death, and of course I have a deadline. I messed around with the new logic for the past week and was impressed at how solid it was too.

Re: Squarp Instruments Hermod Modular Brain

I just got a used Hermod and while it’s cosmetically great the encoder requires a very surprising amount of force pressing down before it registers. Is this normal? Is it like this at first and then breaks in?

Re: Why is the Mother 32 so expensive?

If you look, you’ll find this trend across almost all used gear on reverb and it’s clearly a result of Covid. A few theories, and it’s probably some combination of: 1. People got stimulus money and have been buying gear so the used supply is much smaller 2. Many people are unwilling to go ship thing...

Re: Never meet your heroes

EMS Synthi. Uninteresting, uninspiring, felt like a homemade kit that was going to fall apart under even gentle use, sounded about as good as a monotron or volca. For the life of me I will never underhand the hype and the status and can only conclude that it’s the rest of mass psychosis.

Are there pics or a size comparison anywhere of the easel command next to the regular Easel? Is it a scaled-down mini panel?

You have to change the sync mode by plugging it into USB and using the configuration software. Don’t ask me how long I messed with this frustrated before figuring this out

Re: Is the Alpha Juno 2 really that tedious to program without the PG-300?

I don’t find it super tedious - it’s architecturally simple, the presets are actually pretty damned great as starting points, and there’s a TON of sysex of patches out there to explore as well. I use an iPad editor for it but half the time just use the wheel. I really love the Alpha 2 - it’s got a g...

OPZ, end of discussion. I’ve done this for decades starting with a Roland PMA5, then Yamaha QY70 and 100 as well as Nintendo DS with the korg cart, iOS apps, OP1, etc. etc. OP-Z is the answer.

Hi Hermod users - legato-only pitch slides are a big part of my sound and I’m trying to figure out if the hermod can do them. I know it can do constant portamento but I’m trying to see if it can do portamento only when two notes overlap. Any workarounds?

Thanks for the help. Yeah, I think using something in practice will help. We all learn differently. I hate the don't buy it unless you get it right away, advice. Its ok, Ill get it. Live interactive effects for the whole mix

Other than the dated Kaoss pad, what are some good devices to strap over the whole mix when playing live (or most of it) for real-time tweaking? I’m interested in gating/slicing, filtering, tape/vinyl spin downs, and other dynamic things like that that I can use for dynamic effects or transitions.

One thing nobody is mentioning is that when in track mode, each track’s LED pulses in time to show what the track is doing. Between this, self-adopted conventions like habitually using certain track numbers or groups for specific instruments, and also glancing at the screen for the selected track na...

In the late nineties, all I wanted, with every fiber of my being, was one of those Emu E4XT Ultra samplers. They were thousands of bucks and then by the time you added on the RFX32 card and additional memory, etc. even more. I still haven’t bought one, but you can grab one for like $500 these days. ...

The reason why it’s not typically done is that if you have high res on your filter it’ll just drone on and not be gated with the notes. That said I like to use filters on almost everything when mixing, not just synth sounds, but I won’t go into self oscillation with the resonance I actually thought...

They are huge and luxurious to work on. Don’t get one for crunch though - it’s a surprisingly smooth sounding machine. SP-1200 is crunch all day, MPC60 is smooooth.

To buy a brand new Cirklon with the CVIO and basic breakout box - what I consider a standard full Cirklon configuration - it was easily $2K USD by the time you accounted for the exchange rate, shipping, import brokerage fee of $50 to bring it into the country. $2400 in a world where there is a 2 yea...

I’ve used or owned most sequencers but finally settled on the Cirklon and the SE Engine as my two favorites ever. Why not filter after VCA/dynamics?

I ended up doing a few “filter last” patches recently and was surprised that it didn’t really make a difference or even gave an interesting new flavor since the filter was now working on different dynamics and doing things like resonating differently depending on the dynamics of the incoming VCA out...
