Re: Oberheim SEM sound recreation in Eurorack

Wow, nice build! As usual when the Euro SEM topic comes up, I can't resist chiming in. PM Foundations helped me restore my FVS and I ended up sending two of the SEMs to them to fix for me. The modules that make up the reSEMble panel are also available as standalone Eurorack modules, but of course, y...

Re: MPE controllers

@22tape, you may be right 'though. Their site mentions it's MPE but it seems to be a very limited portion of MPE. They only mention per-key pitchbend and poly aftertouch, which to me is barely MPE.

Just a heads up that Lumi Keys have polyAT but not MPE like the Seaboards.
The demos look that way but:

Re: MPE controllers

This is new and seems cool. http://roli.com/products/blocks/lumi-keys-studio-edition More lights is always a bonus (I think) but I like that you can build a controller in a modular fashion, including non-keyboard bits and adding more keyboards to get 2, 4 or whatever octaves. Not sure about using th...

Re: Recommended high quality eurorack DIY brands

Had lots of success with PM Foundations so far. I've messaged the owner a few times and he's always been very helpful. What do you think of the quality of the front panels? I've never used the pcb material for front panels yet and am curious if they feel as sturdy as metal ones. When I first starte...

Re: Behringer: practices, ethics, morals and legitimacy.

I think at one time, everyone did this to some extent. It's quaint and dated I'll admit, but there seemed to be quite a bit more up-front sharing that went on back then. We haven't noticed too much in common between the SEM and the ARP circuitry 'though. We recently completed restoring an Oberheim F...

Re: Behringer SEM 2-voice

I don't necessarily blame Uli 'though, although I'm not impressed with him as a person. The real blame is on us. Are we so stuck in the past that someone like Uli has a market for his stolen designs!? And the answer appears to be, yup we are. yeah sure, but this same behavior fed other people for y...

Re: Behringer SEM 2-voice

Many of the x0x knock-offs and other clones are low-volume, DIY things. They were never meant for mass distribution. In our case, we originally had a much closer clone designed, with similar functionality and a similar look. I sent a note to Tom and asked him if it was okay, and he forwarded the not...

Re: Behringer 2-voices SEM

Behringer is off my list, just can't handle the ethics of it. But that's just me. We went a different route, and from what we've been told, we got the sound right, but you'd need to build your own and it doesn't look like an SEM. The modules and the SEM panel use the same PCBs, and sound the same. ...

Re: Behringer 2-voices SEM

It's a good choice for Beh clone, but IMO the SEM is one synth that could really use a few changes rather than attempting a faithful clone. Like complete ADSR EGs, better mixer controls, and better modulation inputs on oscs & the filter. Like Oakley did with the ASV synth voice module. But having a...

I wouldn't do the Behringer stuff, just personal preference, and if you're just getting into learning synthesis, I think there are less-complicated ways to do that. Not sure where you are in Canada but if it's anywhere near Toronto, you're welcome to come and play with what I have.

Re: All Analog DIY Eurorack Synth?

The modules behind the reSEMble panel are available as separates. Instead of using the single panel, you build them behind each of their own panels. You'll need: 3 8080 VCOs (based on SEM) 1 Mod+ 1 RingFolder 1 3080 VCF (based on SEM) 2 ADSR-D EGs (based on SEM) Plus a mixer and VCA, which are also ...

Re: All Analog DIY Eurorack Synth?

We designed the reSEMble panel around this sort of thinking. 3 VCOs, Noise, LFO, wavefolder, ring mod, VCF, two EGs and VCA.

Have a look at it on the PM Foundations site, or my channel on YouTube.

Re: SEMulation - how create a SEM-type sound?

R*S Haible Living VCO is not Moogish at all. The inspiration for this VCO was a mutation of features found in EMS and Yamaha CS80. Seems to be some confusion about the inspiration for the Living VCO. I've seen references to Moog and EMS VCOs (mostly their limitations) but I've never seen anything r...

Re: SEMulation - how create a SEM-type sound?

I helped restore the FVS used to design the PM Foundation modules and helped design the reSEMble panel. We worked towards getting the sound as close as we could without requiring any silly components, but we were not interested in designing a clone. Recreating specific sounds or patches from an SEM ...

Re: Small Filters with Character

Any Polivoks or Synthacon VCF will have character, at least in my opinion. Really depends on your definition of character. For me, it means it can get wild if you push it. Another option is adding a wavefolder or ring modulator to your current setup. I'm partial to the PM Foundations RingFolder sinc...

There is another option if you want to build one and don't mind it sounding like an SEM but not looking like one. Check out PM Foundations on Tindie, and my demo videos on YouTube. These are not clones but they are tributes and sound very close. On the advice of an associate of Tom's, we abandoned p...

Re: Motas-6 synth

Not a connection, just a philosophy of doing something different and approaching the synth in a different way than the usual east coast approach. I could be wrong of course. I wasn't sure about the Phenol at first either but given some time, it grows on you. The Motas-6 is out of my price range for ...
