What a distracting day with this sad event making me nostalgic for what was a little bit different era for me here, when my forum obsession some years bak led me to get to know several of you here fairly well through public and private discourse, of course including Mike. Definitely haven't been in contact with Mike for some years now, when he seemed to drop out of the social side of this platform.

But what a platform it has been. It once put a group of us together for a memorable early meet in Dallas (thanks again, Brandon), when other people's gear was the first anyone had seen aside for things they had bought and people expressed fascination that other people were into the same thing. It gave me the opportunity to meet up with kindred spirits across the country when I traveled. It provided a meaningful social outlet through phone calls or late night threads that were treated like chat clients. It gave me the opportunity to be generous and experience the generosity of others through various charitable efforts, threads or pms that turned into counseling sessions, etc. It certainly inspired me to try gear I had never heard of, continues to inspire me to push myself in music, synthesis, DIY, etc. It also inspired me to consider other world views and sometimes even pushed me towards more thoughtful views myself, despite the infamous no politics rule. Forum contacts were the seed that a local modular hobbyist group has sprung from in my area and I am sure in others as well. And that's just off the cuff for me.

Someone else could have set up a forum, and the same people would have gravitated there, too. But MW is the place that gained traction, and Mike will hold a fond place in my memory for his often thankless contributions towards that end. And he will remain a memorable character to me despite us never having met for his tender heart, wry humor, and definitely for his unique tastes in porn. :hihi: It has been sweet to read through the outpouring of sympathy and memories here, fb, etc., and to see a few long missing faces pop up here, too. This awkward, dysfunctional, but somehow still lovable digital family is an impressive legacy.

Condolences to Mike's family, love for Mike, and much love for all of you as well.

Rest in patch cables, Mike.

I know very little about you, but I’m here writing my condolences. That alone is a testament to the fact that, goddamnit, you started something that added to a lot of people’s lives.

Thanks for inspiring us all.

How much joy he has given everyone here. Saddened to hear his passing and any suffering. But I must say that he definitely made his mark and helped facilitate our community into something priceless. My only hope is that it will continue to strengthen, in an underground sort of way of course. I don't know much about his life, what he did outside the forum (and I feel for the family), but any death should also be a celebration imho, especially since Mike created and sustained Muffwigglers like he did. Really awesome what he created.

I wasn't sure whether or not to post this because it is heartbreaking, but for those of you who didn't know much about Mike I think it says more than words can.

My heartfelt condolences to Mike's family and friends. His contribution to the evolution of music won't easily be forgotten. And thanks to the rest of the Muff Wiggler community for contributing so selflessly much in the same manner as it's founder.

Such sad news for his loved ones. All I knew about him is that he has a young daughter.

Someone needs to create a module, the McGrath, which takes an array of diverse and sometimes incompatible signals and combines them into something both universally positive and critically useful for all.

Here’s to a wonderful fraternity and to a man who enabled it...

i heard the news last night and have been trying to think of a fitting thing to say over the last 24hrs. i guess i'm just not quite sure what to say.
years ago, i was lucky to have met him once for a few hours when he came through Minneapolis. some friends had known him from his KVR days and invited him out so a bunch of us got together. things in my life weren't the best back then, but i remember that night being one of the better nights i had in a long time. he was such a kind soul and full of humorous anecdotes.
as i was not able to hang out for more than the early part of the night because i had taken time off from work, i missed the rest of the time he was here. the next day i sent him a message thanking him for taking the time to hang out. he of course was kind enough to reply.
i didn't know him any more than that unfortunately and he likely would not have remembered me, but i'll always remember how much fun that night was. he also wouldn't know that i wouldn't have met any of the other people who came that night if it wasn't for his forum. i arrived here after wanting to know more about modular and ended up finding friends when i only had maybe 2 friends at the time. maybe all that is why Mike's death bothers me more than most deaths have - i don't know.
all i can say to anyone reading this and Mike's family and friends is that no one is ever truly gone if they are not forgotten, and all the comments here show that won't happen any time soon. what he created, how he brought people together, and the genuine kindness he displayed are reminders that he affected the lives of many and the murmur of his presence will endure in the hearts of many.
if there should be any thing after this life, i hope he's travelling once more, stopping in on the likes of AntManBee and ChuckEJesus, letting him know that pink patch cables eventually became a thing, for they are not forgotten either.

sempervirent wrote:So sad to see this. I read every comment in the thread and new ones just keep pouring in. It's amazing how many people are taking the time to say something, amazing how many lives (including mine) were directly influenced by Mike's random decision to install phpBB on a server back in the day.

Mike's refusal to commercialize the site or run advertisements despite ever-increasing hosting costs always seemed to be an intentional negation of corporate-controlled social media and the pervasive hostility, misinformation, and exploitation that it facilitates. This site has instead facilitated connection, community, openness, sharing, creativity, friendships, and free flows of information – the antithesis of what online discussion has largely become in 2019.

The overall tone here has changed somewhat in recent years but I think the best we can do to honor Mike's intentions is to keep all this in mind. The community is not just the forum itself, it's the people who post here. Mike created this platform but whatever name, shape, or form it might take next there is no community without people who are helpful, patient, tolerant, kind, and considerate. Today I think we can all realize that life is short and contemplate what kind of legacy we want to leave after we're gone.
Well said...
