Site Migration Completed

Post by Flatscan » Sun Dec 22, 2019 10:45 pm

First of all, let me introduce myself;
I'm Mike's younger brother, Rob, and I've taken over technical support for the site.

The existing admins and moderators won't be changing, and i'll mostly be keeping out of the forum content, I'm just here to keep the server happy and the accounts paid.

On that topic, I'd like to apologize for the downtime over the last couple days.

I've been working for the past few weeks to migrate the server off of the old (and expensive!) Dreamhost servers on to something more affordable and better designed so I can more easily troubleshoot it when issues do happen. I was about 70% done that process and caught up with my day job when the Dreamhost bill came due, causing the site outage.

The good news is that the outage lit a fire under my ass to get the migration done, and I'm pleased to say that is it now complete; muffwiggler.com is now hosted by vultr, bringing out monthly bill down by several hundred dollars.
I expect performance will be similar if not better than before; The forum software has been upgraded to the latest (phpBB 3.2), there's a lot less bloat on the server, and the software running the site is laid out in a much more sane manner (10 years of backups, draft sites, and software upgrades leaves a lot of garbage behind).

I've also set up a new twitter account where I can be reached and will communicate any developments with the site;
https://twitter.com/wiggler_forums

Thank you all for your patience and understanding. I'm sorry that it took me as long as it did to get this done, but it should mean a much more stable muffwiggler from here on out.

thanks for taking care of this place, its a great resource.

out of curiosity, are the last weeks posts going to come back at some point? DEC 16 seems to be latest stuff kept. it might get hard to merge that later if too many people post between now and then.

Thank you Rob!

The previous site had two shortcut search links, one for posts since last visit and one for viewing your own posts. It would be great if these can be added.

Thanks for pointing that out, guest. I thought I was working on the latest database snapshot when I started the final migration but I guess I must have been looking an an older test DB.

I'll pull out the latest one and try to rebuild everything from the 16th to today.
I'll look into the search shortcuts as well.

They're in the top left menu next to faq (on mobile, anyway)

Hey folks, post anything problems you find here. Or there may be other similar threads soon - these things happen.

Stuff we know about - the missing posts from the 16th to today (the 22nd). Maybe these will be back soon.

A bunch of stuff may have been autopruned out of the Want to Buy section before I caught it and changed the settings. Many apologies for that. Autoprune works now!

We're working on getting the old header and look of the old forum, or maybe not. We'll see how that sorts out. The cats will be back in some form or another.

Embedding videos seems to not be working currently - we need to add an extension for that.

There's a ton of new settings to get used to - poke around your profile and personal settings, try stuff.

DIY forum at least appears to have a lot of broken images.... not sure if they were supposed to be images hosted at Muff's or external -- obviously external is beyond your control.

Examples: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=211671&start=325 The "post your build pictures" thread, posts by balbibou, soggybag, just another rookie from the 14th. Other pictures on the page (notably the TTSH) are loading fine. Perhaps *those* are the ones from off site?

I haven't investigated thoroughly but figured I'd make a note of it.

Otherwise: awesome to see a more modern code base, hope that the old "theme" can be reconstructed to some degree. Thanks very much Rob!

Yes, it seems to be hit and miss with locally hosted files - some are working, some aren't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. One for the sql jockeys to sort out. (hey flatscan! it looks like it might be a permissions problem?)

Am I missing a way to edit a post? I was going to point out that the first two users I mentioned were from the 12th not the 14th.

As long as folks are aware and working on it I've achieved my goal here :)

Critical issue: severe lack of cats.

Most recent PMs (from just before the migration) have disappeared. I don't need them restored (have copies in e-mail), just reporting the status of things.

Editing was disabled for these top two forums on the old board, I guess that setting carried over here. Sorry about that. That was enabled for some reason I forget, it may need to be re-addressed sometime.

Yes, everything from the 16th to today (the 22nd) is gone. As indicated earlier, this may be corrected later if possible.

Glad to see it's back up, the update is fresh. Buchla themed color scheme anyone? (also I miss the kitties and the bananas)
