Couldn´t it be an idea to build something like a channel strip? Preamp, EQ and compressor. That would make the cost more reasonable but still provide more or less the same thing as a mixer.

A 2U rack thingy perhaps? :hmm:

I recommend Groovetubes vipre. Best preamp that I have ever owned. I have owned neve, Manley, ssl, Avalon and many others.

I am planning this kind of setup (or is this a bad idea? - feel free to suggest other combos)

Intellijel : dubmix + 2x audio interface
Metasonix: 2x r57

Power..AND custom diy cabinet.

Those R-57's are nearly no-holds-barred. Would be very cool to run four channels though, like dancing on coals.

As an alternative, the R-51's (single channel) are particularly versatile and sweet sounding VCA's / distortions IMO. Four of those would soak up twice as much rack space though. Four of those with four R-52's into a Dubmix would be a sick version of a four channel tube(d) mixer!!

Still thinking about it. We can't even get a decent hold on what people want: mic inputs or line only? Reverb or not? Mono or stereo out? etc. etc.....

Well, since you asked…

I’d love a dirty tube mixer with:

1 mic input and the rest line inputs
Bonus for a channel with a simple preamp for a guitar/bass input
Some sort of EQ or filtering on each channel
Reverb
Stereo Outs
Bonus for an Aux out or two

The above seems like it would be extremely ambitious.

I say all this with no money in my pocket though.

Would it be possible to start a Kickstarter campaign to fund the initial startup? If people are serious, they can put up money to make it happen.

My take would be:
•4 channels
•1 xlr mic (bonus for phantom power supply); the rest 1/4" line
•basic eq (bass, treb)
•1 aux out (bonus for 2)
•Stereo outs

No built-in reverb; if I want that, I'll use my R-56.

I would totally save some cash for that

Well, kids, since this thread started in 2013, TL Audio has apparently gone out of business. That "Busby" outfit doesn't seem to have produced anything. Thermionic's Fat Bustard and the Manley line mixers seem to be the only tube mixer-things available right now. Damn are they expensive!

Currently I'm leaning toward making a channel strip in the same form factor as S-2000. With balanced mic and line in, simple eq, maybe a limiter of some sort, a fader, and two outputs with panning between them. They would be chainable so you can stack up a buncha channels and chain the outputs to get a "console". Perhaps if it does well, later there would be an "output module" with master faders, reverb, metering and other such.

A strip could be doable for around $2k retail. This would be easier than the "expected way" of making a massive vintage-looking retro mixer with meters and giant ugly black knobs blah blah. Will I regret doing this because sales were too slow and people could not figger out how to use it?

I'd personally could use the channel strip in this format if it could be used as a stereo processor so i'd install it as an insert on my master or on stereo effects processing.

not sure about the sales but it sounds pretty simple to use!

i would likely not buy one, but feel the world would be a better place if such a strip existed. not sure what the currency exchange rate is on that value, though.

It sounds cool, but not what I'm looking for at the moment.
Then again, I'm not necessarily the target market.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like I'm knocking it. I know the M-1000 is a one-off made for Mike Weeks, but as long as the thread was necro'd, figured I'd throw my hat in about a newer, maybe simpler 4-track. Thinking about it now though, exen a simple 4-track with no frills at all would probably still be more complex than I was initially picturing. (Number of tubes and such)
The chainability of each channel strip would be clutch and does indeed make it desireable for me, but it'd take me a while to save up $8,000 for four of them so you wouldn't really be able to count on me being an early adopter.

Channel strip idea is a cool one I'm down.... Honestly I would rather leave the design up to you! But I am ready...

Gonna re-necro this thread, sorry :omg:

Instead of an outboard unit, I just found myself thinking how nice it would be just to have a simple Metasonix mixer module. Dead simple; two channels; nothing fancy. Just two inputs, Input Gain for each, and maybe an Output Level. I'd buy that with my next paycheck!
